Date of Deletion

Today in the world, the information shared on the internet is permanent and
cannot be taken down. Some people think this is a good thing, and some think it is bad. In
my own opinion, information shared on the web that has to do with social media should
have an expiration date of some sort. I say only with social media because there are
documents on the internet that do benefit other people. But information on social media
sites are not so useful, most of the times.
I started to play with the idea of an expiration date, or date of deletion, that
would be for the items shared on social media sites. In the end, I decided that the date of
deletion should be chosen by the website the information was uploaded on, not the
submitter. I say this because not everything posted on websites are there for good reason
or should be seen. Some people put pictures or posts on the web to embarrass others, not
to help them. How this date of deletion would work is when a picture or post is uploaded
on the internet, the website would give the submitter two months. After that allowed time,
the picture or post will disappear from the website and from the internet as a whole. This
way, no one will have a copy. The date of deletion would work this way because a big
problem today is people think what they post will go away if they delete it. What most do
not know is if you post something on a site, that site will have a copy of what you post.
So, my method will stop sites from holding a copy of posts.
As stated above, I do think information posted on social media websites should
have a date of deletion. I think strongly of this because for one, most things posted on
social media should not be there in the first place. I have never been bullied before, but I
have mostly seen is happen on social media sites. And not just in posting nasty rumors,
but also in pictures too. An example of this is during middle school, there was this girl
who was pretty popular and had a lot of friends. But one day, someone made a website
about her. On this website was comments from people at my school saying how she is an

awful person, she sleeps around, and other really bad things. When the site went up, she
girl did not come to school for a good month and a half. The school eventually caught the
person who started the website and shut it down. But if you ask my opinion on the matter,
with the right computer smarts and drive, someone could bring that website back and
torment the girl even more. Deleting the pictures/posts after a certain amount of time
would take care of all the arguments. Another reason information should be deleted after
a certain amount of time is because of Google. Have you ever tried typing your name into
a Google search engine? The stuff that comes up when you do is pretty creepy.
Something that seems to come up often is everything you have ever done on the internet.
For example, one time my mom and I looked up each others names on Google. When I
did that, nothing really came up for my moms name because she does not have an
account on any website. But when she looked up my name, she found something I
commented on when I first made my Facebook page (which was back in 2010).
Even though I do think every social media website should have a date of deletion,
there are some situations that would not benefit from the date of deletion. One instance,
that I know of very well, would the case of precious family photos or memories. A lot of
families like to post pictures so friends and family can share in the joy of an event or a
well taken picture. In my own personal experience, I know that to be very true. I do not
see a lot of my family because they live in the Caribbean. But to keep me and others
living in the United States in the loop, constant pictures are posted on Facebook, Twitter,
and Instagram.
In todays world, social media websites have the right to keep copies of your posts and
pictures even after you delete them. In my own opinion, there should be and expiration
date, or date of deletion, on each post and picture (about three months). After the
allowed time, the item would be erased from the website and the internet as a whole.
