Hydration flow versus age by adiabatic calorimetry at different temperature

LNE
C

Peak time of maximal heat hydration flow of different

mortars

The incorporation of cement with 5%

and 25% of MK reduce the hydration
peak age of 2 h and 5 h respectively
compared to the reference mortar
(MK0).

At higher temperatures (20 and

40 C), the peaks became narrower
and the reduction in the peak age
decreased.

LNEC Lisbon 31 May - 1June 2012

From 28 days, the mortars containing MK exhibited

higher strength.

At early age (3, 7 and 14 days), the incorporation of MK reduced the

compressive strength compared to the reference mortar MK0.

IC

The optimal replacement rate was 15% of MK.

Conclusion

At early age

LNE
C

At low temperature: the incorporation of MK affects the mechanical strength

At high temperature: the incorporation of MK reduces the loss of strength
(acceleration of hydration process)
Correlation with hydration: The increase in cumulative heat and hydration rate
correspond to the augmentation in
strength.
At the medium and long term
For all temperatures the incorporation of MK increases the compression strength.
The maximal resistances were observed for medium and low temperatures
At high temperature: The strength increase of mortars was very low after 28 days
Effect of MK rate

At all temperatures, the increase of the MK rate improve the binder activity. The
optimum MK content is detected from the compressive strength results. It
corresponded about 15%
