SIGNIFICANCE OF ATHI RUDRA MAHA YAGNAM

Our Motherland, Bharata Khanda, is a Karma Bhoomi. The Vedic Tradition, the Cultural Richness,
the Unity in Diversity and the Peace loving people cannot be compared to any other country in the world.
The Rishis and Maha-purushas made it a star, a crest-jewel in the crown of the Universe.
Originally, the Vedas - the collection of Mantras by various Rishis - were in single form. For the ease of
handling, Sage Krishna Dwaipayana codified it into four - Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharvana and therefore
attained the title Veda Vyasa. The Veda Mantras were drawn by the Rishis by their Tapas and imparted
to their sishyas and sishya paramparas. The Vedas were not authored by any human personality - they
were revealed to the Rishis by the Lord.
Sri Rudram, the prayer to Lord Siva, is perhaps the most popular and efficacious among the Vedic hymns.
It occurs in the middle of the Taitriya Samhita of Sri Krishna Yajur Veda. It speaks of Lord Siva's several
forms, His omniscience, His omnipresence and His omnipotence, in choice and sweet pada renderings.
The Athi Rudra Maha Yagna is the supreme form of worship to Lord Siva. It is a very rare
opportunity to participate in or witness "The Athi Rudra Maha Yagna" in ones lifetime.
As per our Acharyas "The four Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva) are the roots of our religion and
foundation for Sanatan Dharma. Krishna Yajur Veda, one of the 2 Samhitas (versions) of Yajur Veda is
quite significant, of which Rudram and Chamakam are a part.
Rudram is the most sacred means of worshipping Lord Siva. There are four kinds of Rudra parayana and
Homams: Rudram (11 times), Ekadasa Rudram (11X11=121), Maha Rudram (121X11=1331) and Athi
Rudram (1331X11=14641); each has greater significance than its preceding one. 'Athi' means
"ultimate". Therefore, Athi Rudram is the supreme form of worship of Lord Siva. Athi Rudram is a
destroyer of all sorrows and the provider of 'Kshema'."

Highlights of Athi Rudra Maha Yagna

Vibrations from the 14,641 (121 ritwiks * 11 chants * 11 days) chants of Namakam and 1,331 (121
ritwiks * 1 chant * 11 days) chants of Chamakam, by over 121 learned Ritwiks/Pandits ;
Ganapathy Homam, Navagraha Homam, Rudra Homams, Chandi Homam, Krama Archanas,
Upanishad Parayanam and Kalasa Abhishekams to Lord Chandramouleeswarar ;
Spiritually charged Religious atmosphere with over 12 hours a day of ceremonies for 11 consecutive
days ;
Spiritual discourses by scholars ;
Recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanam, Lalitha Sahasranamam, Soundarya Lahari, Abhirami
Andhathi, Narayaneeyam in evening hours ;
Annadhanam on all days following the morning, afternoon & evening programmes ;

Benefits of chanting Sri Rudram

Athi Rudram is a destroyer of all sorrows and the provider of 'Kshema'.
It is said: By reciting Veda once, one becomes pure on that day, but by reciting Rudram the very next
moment he gets purified. Yet another verse declares: Where a devote reciter of the Rudram lives, be
it in a village or town, that place will be free from disease, drought, thefts, and other ills.
A devote listener and seeker of Rudram Chamakam is blessed with both worldly and spiritual benefits
such as good health, peace of mind and pure joy. Slowly and steadily it draws the listener to
spirituality in the quest of the truth behind human existence.
The Sri Rudram is divided into Eleven Sections called Anuvakhas.
First Anuvakh is chanted for all round development of the community as well as the well-being of
the chanter. It provides a protective shield against diseases, devils, monsters, etc.
Through Second Anuvakh, Lord is requested to untie the bonds of the day-to-day life. This is
chanted for destruction of enemies, possession of wealth, getting of kingdom and so on.
Third Anuvakhis chanted to remove ignorance and cure all kinds of diseasesfrom us.
Fourth Anuvakhdescribes Him as a common man with His deficiencies, angularities and described
as the creator and worker of all kinds.
Fifth Anuvakh describes several aspects of Rudra's personality, especially His power for Creation,
Preservation and Destruction. This is chanted to get rid of Ignorance and Maya, for victory against
enemies, for begetting a son, for avoidance of problems during pregnancy and for increase in wealth.
Sixth Anuvakhdescribes Him as the source of the different worlds, Shrutis (Vedas) and its essence in
Vedanta.
Seventh Anuvakh is chanted for the increase of intelligence, wealth, health and longevity.
Eighth Anuvakh is chanted for the destruction of enemies and re -possession of ones assets. It is
told that when one does not have time to chant the Rudra fully at least this Eighth Anuvakh should be
chanted.
Ninth Anuvakh is chanted for obtaining wealth, a good wife, good job, and the blessings of a son
who will be devoted to Lord.
Tenth Anuvakh chanted for possession of wealth, cure of diseases, removal of fear, getting rid of the
enmity of powerful people, absence of fear from all living beings, having the vision of Bhairava (Siva
in his most fearful aspect), absence from dangers and fears, blessings and the absolution of sins.
Eleventh Anuvakh praise the Rudras army called Ganaas. This Anuvakh is chanted for acquiring
knowledge of past, present and future.
The powers and benefit of such an enviable task of participating and performing an "Athi
Rudram" is beyond verbal description and it would suffice to sum it up that in our life span one
should be lucky to see and participate in a Athi Rudram.
