QUESTION 3

PLAGIARISM ISSUES

Plagiarism or copying and pasting the practice is becoming more widespread, especially
among students in higher education institutions or universities either in Malaysia and overseas.
Dictionary of plagiarism as copying or Hall is collecting part or all of the work of others without
permission or without informing the artist's name, but recognizes it as his own work. Academic
terms, the symptoms of plagiarism means copying the information or whether the work of an
academic reference books, journals and written form from the Internet by students and is regarded
as an academic fraud.
The practice of plagiarism among students is common due to several factors. The first factor
is students' lack of skills to find information either through reference books or resources from the
internet. Students who were not exposed to these skills will face difficulty in obtaining an accurate
facts to support the assignment. The second factor is the students do not have enough time to
complete the assignment. These factors will lead to students copying the work or ideas of another
person to complete their tasks. Next, the third factor is the factor of the university's learning
environment different from learning in school. At school students have been accustomed to be
supplied with notes and teacher guided. In contrast, conditions at the university level, students
should be able to find information to complete the task. Some students who do not know how to
take notes or information will take the easy way to copy and paste the practice to complete their
homework.
The next factor is the lack of awareness among students about plagiarism. Many students do
not know about the true meaning of plagiarism and think their retaliatory action mimic the
information obtained from books or the internet is not an offense. This is because there is no
exposure and action taken to curb this menace. The last factor is the attitude of the student are not
concerned about the outcome of tasks and that they had committed plagiarism. They just know they
can complete the assignment within the prescribed time even just get the minimum grade and can
finish their studies.

The university, faculty and lecturers should be responsible for enforcing the law on this and
inform the culture of plagiarism offense and its effects on all students. In addition, the faculty can
apply on-line computer software that can detect plagiarism in student activities. The following
software has been used by many universities around the world to address this plagiarism. However,
the students themselves should be responsible and honest in the production of any academic writing
and discipline in accordance with all the writing that has been set.
In conclusion, the practice of plagiarism needs to be contained and prevented before it
becomes a very serious issue. The students need to be ethical in the performance of all academic
work and ensure that only original work submitted for assessment to measure academic
achievement and actual capabilities themselves. Students should also make full use of critical and
creative minds to produce a dissertation or academic writing that has been entrusted.
