2012

In 2005, the government enacted the Special Economic

Zones (SEZ) Act, 2005 followed by notification of SEZ Rules
on 10th February 2006 In short span since SEZs Act and
Rules were notified in February, 2006, of the 585 SEZs the
approved, 381 have been notified of which 143 SEZs are
already exporting. It is quite heartening
to see that SEZs now export in excess of Rs. 3,00,000 crore
accounting for over 28% of the country's total exports. With
an investment of Rs. 2,00,000 crore, SEZs today provide
direct employment to over 7,00,000 people

Falling in line with the evolving global phenomenon, the

Government of India also introduced Special Economic Zones
under April 2000. Special economic Zones are created to
encourage to exporters by providing them world-class
facilities. The Indian SEZ policy provides for development of
these zones in the government, private or joint sector. This
offers equal opportunity to both Indian and international
private developers.
The author concluded that in short span of five years 200001 to 2006-07 there has been an increase of exports to the
tune of Rs. 57899 Crores. Benefit derived from SEZs is
evident from the investment, employment, exports and
infrastructural developments additionally generated.

SEZ are the new feature of the Indian economy. There are
many benefits of SEZs, the main concepts of this research
paper is the analyzing income and employment created.
The whole idea of the author in this paper is that setting up
of SEZ was to increase the economic development of the
country. The author had done a research study on SEZ and
interpreted that income generated in organization is
through 100% export Oriented and majority of the
organizations are supported by financial institutions.

The author described that Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a

geographical region that has economic laws that are more
liberal than a country's typical economic laws. Today, there
are approximately 3,000 SEZs operating in 120 countries,
which account for over US$ 600 billion in exports and about
50 million jobs. India has in fact, the right mix of factors such
as availability of large & skilled workforce, intrinsic
comparative advantage in several industries, a strong policy
framework, availability of complementing & supporting
ancillary industry, an already buoyant export sector & vast
local markets. SEZs can combine these factors into a
2012 powerful alchemy to power investment creation.

24,56,57

This paper endeavours to discuss these and other pertinent

questions surrounding SEZs in India. The section that follows
traces the evolution of the SEZ policy
in India and identifies the current policy focus and
priorities. The present study shows that the policy has
yielded only modest results in
terms of exports, employment and investments. The social
costs of human
displacement and the economic costs of land acquisition
have been observed
to far outweigh the benefits that have accrued from the
policy The central point this paper seeks to make is that the
2011 SEZ policy should be reviewed

18,26

1,46

India this time, must not fail to encash the benefits that SEZs
could bring to the country. India must try to emulate
the success of Chinese SEZ model, but by customizing their
model to our specific requirements. For example,
sectors where India has inherent strengths, like IT and gems
& jewellery - the manpower requirements for which
only being available in cities where large areas are
difficult/not possible - must definitely be encouraged without
getting into apprehensions about their numbers, lower land
area requirement etc., in the interest of quick implementation of SEZs.about 462 SEZs have been formally
approved and about 135 in-principle approvals have been
granted
post enactment of SEZ Act 2005 and SEZ Rules 2006.Out of
the 462 formally approved SEZs, about 222 SEZs
August 22 have been notified by the Central Government.

The present study integrates various aspects of human

development effects into a single framework and examines
the Indian experience within that framework. The
research question is whether EPZs have contributed to
employment, human development, and poverty reduction in
India.special economic Zones contribution as an engine for
promoting new knowledge, technologies and innovations
through technology transfers and technology creation has
2007 however been quite limited till now.

In the past 30 years, China has achieved phenomenal

economic growth, an unprecedented development
miracle in human history.China has come a long way in
a short time , and its rise is the most compelling
economic story of the 21st century . Although it still
faces many challenges and difficulties in sustaining its
rapid growth, it has launched itself on an irreversible
growth path and is poised to become a global
economic powerhouse and a key economic and
financial player . And in todays global crisis , China
has become an
2011 important engine to drive the world out of the downturn

The Indian gems and jewellery industry is competitive in the

world market due to its low cost of production and
availability of skilled labour. In addition, the industry has a
worldwide distribution network, which has been established
over a period of time. India has set up more than 3,000
offices worldwide for promotion and marketing of Indian
diamonds. The share of gold jewellery in Indias exports of
gems and jewellery increased from 9 per cent in 1994 to 22
per cent in 2004, an indication of growing acceptance in the
INDIA DAV world market.
Vaibhav Gems Limited (VGL) was incorporated in Jaipur in
1989. With
a very small beginning, VGL is the largest exporter of
coloured gemstones from India, and
also the one of the largest exporters of studded jewellery.
The company produces gemstones,
diamonds, jewellery and chains. The Western Region,
comprising of Gujarat and Maharashtra would account for
about 60% of the
human resource requirement in the manufacturing space
and thereby drive the need for skill building.
Rajasthan would account for about 10% of the human
2022 resource requirement
