SOLUTION
Q.1

Explanation with reference to the context. (Three out of five)

a) And into my garden stole.

When the night had veild the pole.
In the morning glad I see.
MY foe outstrechd beneath the tree.
Answer:
REFERENCE TO THE CONTEXT: These lines have been taken from the
poem A Poison Tree written by William Blake. The poet tells us how the seed
of anger and enmity is sown in the fertile and rich land of heart. He narrates
how once he was angry with his friend. He did not keep his anger in his heart
and told it to his friend. In this way his anger came to an end but when he
was angry with his enemy he kept the anger to himself and kept on
nourishing it. As a result his anger grew into a big tree and bore a shining but
poisonous fruit which was eaten by the enemy and caused his death.
EXPLANATION: In these lines the poet explains to us the horrible results of
keeping anger, secret in heart and its poisonous and dangerous effects on
human beings. He tells us that when his enemy saw the luster of the fruit of
poison tree,he was tempted to steal and eat it up. At night when it was dark
he entered the garden like a cunning thief and plucking the apple ate it up
then and there. In the morning when the poet woke up and went for a stroll in
the garden, his joy knew no bounds to see his enemy lying dead under the
tree.

b)

Or to what distant lands we may have gone

Through all the years will never have been forgot

Answer:
REFERENCE TO THE CONTEXT: These lines have been taken from the
poem Departure and Arrival written by American poet T. S. Eliot. He tells us
that human progress depends upon the struggle and hard work. He says that
in the present century, we are ready to start our journey to the next century,
to show our courage, wisdom and determination. He persuades his
countrymen to struggle hard and try to give an admirable legacy of hard work
and brilliance to the coming century.
EXPLANATION: In these lines the poet tells us in a very emotional way that
they are trying to uplift the destiny of their nation and this activity will be
continued by them to the last. In future when they are old and snow white
hair is on them, if by some chance or unavoidable circumstances they are
away from their motherland, they will never forget the land of their dreams
for which they worked day and night. They will look back towards it with an
eager eye to know how the plant of their love is being nourished.

c)

The fog comes

On little cat feet

Answer:
REFERENCE TO THE CONTEXT: These lines have been taken from the short
and mysterious poem Fog written by Carl Sandburg who depicts the arrival
and departure of the fog in a very beautiful and impressive way. In fact, the
poet has personified the fog as a cat with its softness, light blue colour and
soft and silent footfalls. The poet presents the graceful arrival and departure
of the mist in a sea port city in a fine manner.
EXPLANATION: The poet depicts the arrival and then the departure of fog on
the canvas of our brain in a matchless style. He says that the fog comes into
the city walking like a cat without creating any noise of footfalls and perches
on the harbour of city for some time watching quietly all around and after
some time vanishes in the same curious manner.

Q.2 Attempt any two of the following questions: (150-200 Words Each)
a) Is Ole Anderson a coward? Discuss with reference to The Killers.
ANSWER: Ole Anderson is the central character of the story The Killers
written by Hemingway who is famous for drawing psychological and
emotional reactions on the characters of his stories. In this story two killers Al
and Max are chasing Ole Anderson as they want him to put to death to oblige
a friend. They enter the restaurant and inquire about Ole Anderson. Ole
Anderson comes there regularly but luckily he does not come there that day.
They decide to wait for him. They suspend the hotel business for some time.
They keep the staff under control on gun point and give them different
orders. They create an atmosphere of terror and suspense there. At last they
decide to go from there. When they have left the restaurant, Nick the waiter
feels sympathy for Ole Anderson and goes to his place which is not so far. He
informs him of the killers and their dangerous designs and asks him to run
away but he shows no interest in the idea of escape. In fact he is neither
brave nor coward. He has been running for a long time to save his life. Now
he is tired of the effort to save his life. Though he is yet alive yet his fear of
death has been killed. Come what may he is now ready to face the killers.

b) Ustad Mangu is painted a fool in the

New Constitution. Support or

refute the statement.

ANSWER: Ustad Mangu is the central character of the story, The New
Constitution written by Saadat Hussan Mantu. Ustad Mangu Tangawala was
a poor man but he is philosophic in thought. Other tangawalas consider him
very wise and full of information. He always tells them about the new
happenings around. He is a freedom loving person. He dislikes the English as
he thinks they are ruling India against the will of the people. He hates them
and thinks them lepers, something rotten. He names them human monkeys.
He mainly collects the information from the fares he carries. One day when
he comes to know that New Act of India was being imposed on first of April,
his joy knows no bounds and he quickly shares this news with his friends. He
is happy that the bonds of slavery will be broken that day. He gets up early in
the morning on first of April to enjoy the rosy colours of freedom but he sees
no change at all rather a gora soldier, who had once humiliated him, again
treats him rudely and harshly. At this he flies into a rage, gives him a sever
beating and is sent to the prison, All these circumstances show that he is not
a fool at all but an emotional lover of freedom and self respect. When his

hopes and expectations are dashed to the ground he cannot control himself
which is quite natural. More over, he is a simple hearted man with a soft and
blotless heart and feelings of patriotism. How can we declare a man mad
whose heart and mind are always replete with the thoughts of freedom, who
values self respect above every thing else and who is considered a wise man
among his friends and associates.

Q.3

Attempt any two of the following questions: (150-200 Words Each)

a) How were we, according to Liaqat Ali Khan, justified in our demand for
Pakistan?

ANSWER:
Rana Liaqat Ali Khan was the first prime minister of
Pakistan. In 1950 he visited America to introduce Pakistan to the Western
world. There, in one of his speeches he tells the Americans that the demand
of Indian Muslims, for a separate homeland, was quite reasonable and
justified. He told them that firstly, in India there lived two major nations; the
Hindues and the Muslims. There religious, social, economical and cultural
back grounds were quite different rather opposite to each other so it was
impossible for them to make a single state. Secondly India was too large to
be ruled by a single government successfully. Thirdly, the population of the
Muslims was 3o millions which was enough to make a separate state for
them. Fourthly on geo political grounds the demand of Pakistan was quite
reasonable

b) Write a character sketch of grandmother in My Grandfather.

ANSWER:
In his essay My Grandfather, the writer W.B.Yeats does
justice to mention the beautiful character of his grandmother also. In this
way, the dry and harsh atmosphere at once changes into a refreshing green
landscape. On the contrary to the harsh and strict personality of his grand
father, his grand mother was kind hearted lady. She was very generous and
was always ready to help the poor. She was very brave and looked after the
house very well. She was loving and caring but some times she punished the

children also for their betterment. It is very interesting that the punishment
was that the child was given dinner in his room. She kept an aesthetic sense
also. She loved her garden and some times copied the prettiest flowers upon
rice paper. In this way the writer has revealed her nice and beautiful
character successfully which has made the essay very colourful. These lines
express all the above facts of this essay aptly:
Grandfather you are very grand and
graceful
We love you but we also fear you
Grandmother you are so sweet and
loving
We love you and want to remain near
you

Q.4

Attempt any two of the following questions: (150-200 Words Each)

a) The heros dreams are pure, innocent and romantic. (Elaborate).

ANSWER:
Tartary is a beautiful romantic piece of art. In this poem the
poet is not building castles in the air but if we probe deep into the spirit of the
poem well know that it is an innocent longing of a heart that is tired of the
dull and harsh routine of world . The poet is fed up with this colourless,
toilsome tiresome, full of miseries routine of life. On the wings of
imaginations, he flies to an imaginary ideal land called Tartary. This longing
and deep desire is in fact in every human heart and soul but thinking it mere
day dreaming people do not express it whereas the poet is bold enough to
express it in a very splendid way. At heart he knows that he is creating a
master piece of art. Away from this harsh world which is full of troubles like
thirst, hunger and want of other resources, he creates, in his imaginations an
ideal wonderland full of romance, grandeur and satisfaction without any kind
of outer interference where he would have every necessity of a charming
blessed life and where he would be the supreme owner and the king . His
throne would be of pure gold, his bed of ivory and beautiful peacock will
decorate his palace. Beautiful fish with shining fins will swim in the royal

pools. Wild zebras will pull his cart as he will be the sole emperor of land,
forest and the valley. All these desires are the outcome of a simple romantic
and imaginative heart. In fact the poet is a true lover of beauty of nature and
is fed up of the harsh worldly life full of fetters. He not only satisfies his own
aesthetic taste but also takes others to that imaginative land.

b)

What is the real nature of Keats fears in When I have Fears?

ANSWER:
Although John Keats died at the early age of 26 yet he is
considered one of the greatest English poets. He was a doctor by profession
but he himself died of a fatal disease, tuberculosis as there was no effective
cure discovered for that ailment by that time. The poor chap with his medical
knowledge was easily able to perceive the shadows of the looming death
advancing towards him. In this poem he expresses his fears that he might go
into the clutches of death before enriching the books with his lofty ideas. He
wanted to accomplish his great poetic works and put his marvelous thoughts
on paper with which his mind was teaming .When he looked into the nights
starred face and the clouds with curious shapes, wonderful ideas came to his
mind. He wants to reveal their mysteries and secrets to the world but he
fears that the approaching death will not allow him to do so. He also fears
that his death will deprive him of the sight of his beloveds beautiful face and
he will not be able to see and enjoy his sweet smile any more. It is a sad fact
that the poet died at an early age taking with him all his tender feelings,
matchless aspirations and incomplete ambitions. May his soul rest in peace!

Q.5
a)

Attempt any two of the following questions: (150-200 Words Each)

Elaborate Santiagos strategies to confront loneliness?

ANSWER:
It is natural for human beings to feel lonely when they are
away from others. Santiago is an old fisherman. He often remains alone as he
has neither wife nor children. He does not mix with other fisher men. Only a
small boy Manolin is his friend and often comes to him, feeds him and helps
in his work yet absolute loneliness is fatal for him as for any other living body.
On his trip to catch his big fish, he stays at sea for three days, first in search
of his big fish and then, in conflict with it and some blood thirsty sharks.
During this loneliness, he devises many methods to overcome it or to lessen

its impact. Firstly he talks to himself most of the time. It is also a sort of loud
thinking. Some times he thinks calmly but often he is found thinking aloud.
On an other occasions he talks to the different things that come in contact
with him. He talks to the little sea bird that suddenly comes and sits on the
rope of his boat. He talks to the fish in a loud voice You are killing me fish
but you have right to. Often he sympathizes with fish thus, Never have I
seen a great or a more noble thing than you brother. Some times he
challenges the fish loudly, Come on and kill me, I do not care who kills who.
An other technique to change the loneliness into a crowd is, to recall the
memories of the past for instance he recalls his hand game with the negro
which lasted for hours. Through these techniques he overcome the loneliness,
as a poet has said in this verse
The moments that I spent away from
you
Seem to be spent in your company,
my love!

b)

Discuss sea as a living entity.

ANSWER:
In the novel The Old man and the Sea, the sea plays a
very prominent roll. It is one of the major characters of the novel. It has no
doubt become a living entity in this symbolic novel. As soon as the old man
puts his boat on it to perform his memorable adventurous voyage, it begins
to breathe like a living being. As the novel advances, we are convinced that
the sea is amazingly a living being that has his strong effects on all those who
come in contact with it. It symbolizes life as it is immense like life and it
keeps on changing its moods which is the sign of life. The sea is a challenge
for man. It promises so many rewards like the Big fish. It tests the mettle of
the seeker showing its favours some times and sternness some times. It has
the capability to make or mar a mans destiny. Like life it has so many favours
for man but when he goes out far in it, he is ruined. It is very deep. No one
knows what lies underneath its surface and what is likely to happen upon its
surface. One thing very important and interesting about the sea is, that it has
a marvelous power to attract especially man towards itself. The old man goes
to it for 84 days but every day returns empty handed but every day it attracts
and pulls him to itself like a powerful magnet. The old man himself takes it for
a woman, who has so many favours for man, Some times it bestows favours
upon him and some times withholds them and leaves him to perish.
