Inc. PRELIMINARY INSTRUCTIONS MOUTHPIECE PLACEMENT Place mouthpiece in center of lips, 2/3 on upper lip, 1/3 on lower lip. Keep space between teeth about the thickness of relaxed tongue. Pucker lips as in modified whistle position and make buzzing sound through mouthpiece. HOW TO HOLD HORN Rest bell on right leg with bell nearly touching belt line, Lay right hand against side away from body. Cup hand slightly and feel weight of horn on thumb knuckle. Make sure that approximately 1/2 of bell is open, HOW TO BREATHE AND START TONE Cough and see how air-pressure comes from the diaphragm, Take a big, deep breath and make the same air-pressure as “coughing” before sounding the tone. Avoid the tendency to "chop off" the last slurred note. Also make cevtain that the last slurred note in each group’ is played at the same dynamic level as the first note (in other words, avoid a diminuendo).
