SHELL CANSOLV

1.1.1

INRODUCTION

Shell Cansolv is an innovative, technology-centered company that offers its clients high
efficiency capture solutions for the removal of sulphur dioxide (SO 2) and carbon dioxide
(CO2) from gas streams in various industrial applications. Shell Cansolv is a leader in gas
treating and sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) recovery technologies, with a
high-performance portfolio of reliable solutions that can help meet the most stringent
product specifications and emission limits at lower costs. The company provides regenerable
amine-based capture technologies to remove pollutants from industrial off-gases. The Shell
Cansolv SO2 and CO2 technologies can be used across a wide variety of industries including
oil & gas, power generation (including coal-fired power plants and combined cycle natural
gas power plants), mining and metallurgical applications, chemicals, industrial boilers, and
sulphuric acid plants. The highly adaptable technology can be added to an existing plant or
incorporated in a new installation. There are 20+ licensed units worldwide.
Shell Cansolv has been part of the greater Shell Group since December 2008.

System

SO2/CO2

Integrated

Cansolv SO2 Scrubbing System

Cansolv's CO2 capture technology is highly

adaptable to a wide variety of industrial
applications, gas flow rates and carbon dioxide
(CO2) concentrations. The system employs a
regenerable solvent and utilizes a proprietary
amine technology which captures the CO2 from
the flue gas and releases it as a pure stream.
Operating on the same principle as the CANSOLV
SO2 Scrubbing System, the CANSOLV CO2
Capture System is a world leading amine based
CO2 capture technology.
The CANSOLV SO2/CO2 Integrated Capture
System is a world-class energy efficient solution
for the capture of greenhouse gases. As the only
provider of both sulphur dioxide (SO2) and carbon
dioxide (CO2) scrubbing technologies, Shell
Cansolv is uniquely positioned to offer an
integrated system that uses the same technology
to
sequentially
scrub
SO2
and
CO2.
The system delivers two marketable byproducts:
SO2 that can be converted into sulphuric acid or
elemental sulphur, and CO2 that can be
compressed and used for Enhanced Oil Recovery.
The CANSOLV SO2 Scrubbing System controls
emissions and captures additional by-product
value from the SO2 emitted in various flue gas

Cansolv TGT+

streams, such as those generated by fluidised

catalytic cracking units, process heaters and
boilers, sulphur plants and spent acid regeneration
units. The SO2 can be recycled to the sulphur
recovery unit to produce marketable sulphur or it
can be converted to sulphuric acid in a sulphuric
acid unit and sold into acid markets.
The CANSOLV TGT+ (tail gas treating plus)
system is an integrated sour gas treating solution
that enables ultra-high overall sulphur recovery
efficiency from sour gas streams while minimizing
process line-up complexity and cost. The system
can recover up to 99.99% of sulphur and
combines the SO2 scrubbing process with the
Shell Global Solutions Sulfinol and ADIP
processes.
The CANSOLV TGT+ system for ultra-high sulphur
recovery is based on Shell Cansolvs sulphur
dioxide (SO2) scrubbing process. The system
helps to achieve the most stringent emission
standards mandated in different jurisdictions,
including those mandated by the World Bank (SO2
stack emission <150 mg/Nm3), at competitive
capital and operating costs while minimizing
process line-up complexity.

1.1.3 STRATEGY AND INSIGHTS

As the company intend to increase energy production over the coming years, Shell maintains a sharp
focus on managing the footprint of our operations, particularly with regards to CO2 emissions and
water use, while working closely with local communities. Global CO2 and water governance plans are
mandatory for each of the strategic themes. We continue to invest in Carbon Capture and Storage,
as we are doing with Quest in Canada and Gorgon in Australia. An operation like Groundbirch in
Canada offers evidence we are making progress on the ground with regard to water efficiency and
recycling.
The companys main focus in renewables continues to be biofuels, which sit in the Downstream
Engine. Shell has been involved in distributing biofuels for over 30 years. In 2011 we started
producing biofuels. With Brazilian company, Cosan, we formed a new company called Razen. With
annual production capacity of about 2.2 billion litres, the JV is one of the worlds largest ethanol
producers. Brazilian sugar cane ethanol is one of the most sustainable Biofuels available on the market
today. It also produces around 70% lower CO2 than conventional gasoline .
