Medieval Times
Monday,14th of July
9:15-10:15-Lets go swimming
10:15(snack)-11:15-Group 4
Coats of arms
Lead in : Ask students what they know about
coats of arms (they were originally used by
medieval knights ,who wore them on their
armour and shield in battles and tournaments
for identification .Without the coats of arms,it
would have been difficult to tell one knight in
armour from another .)
Tell students that many coats of arms have
animals in their design ,and look at the
examples together .Write the names of the
animals the students can find on the board
.Help out with the English names : kangaroo
,emu ,lion, owl ,horse ,bull ,bee ,ant .Ask
students if there is an animal in the coat of
arms of their own country.
Animals often represent certain qualities in
coats of arms. For example ,a lion represents
bravery .Go through the list of animals
together and let students say what qualities
they think the animals must have .Write their
suggestions on the board.

Students use the outline and design their own


coat of arms in groups.
In the end ask each group to hold one coat of
arms and describe the design ,and the
possible characteristics of the person who
made it.

Elicit the meaning of legend and ask for
examples of legends the students know of.
Refer students to the text and the
picture.Label the pictures with the names
from the story.
Elicit new words and ask some comprehension
questions.

King Arthur board game


One student is the question master. He/She
doesnt play .Each group will need a coin
.Students take turns to toss the coin and
move around the board :one square for
heads ,two squares for tails.If they land on the
picture ,they have to say what it is . If they
land on a question mark ,they must answer
the question indicated .

theme of medieval ages and knights .

An elf walking through the forest.
A mermaid talking to a fish.
A wizard casting a spell.
Playing Trade with the flashcards.
Each card has symbol on the upper right
corner .There are 9 symbols in total :a unicorn
,a lion ,a dragon ,a bear ,a bird ,a Pegasus ,a
wolf and a ram.The children trade cards to
obtain all their symbol cards.
