And the Academy

Award for best
Carbon Monoxide
Monitor goes to...
Last month marked the 87th Academy Awards
which presents the trophy, Oscar, made right
here at R.S. Owens in Chicago, to professionals
in the motion picture industry. I know theres
no equivalent to that statue awarded to products, much less products of the HVAC industry. If there was, I have a sure shot winner. Let
me explain:
While working in the office recently on a very,
VERY cold day not unlike any other, Brenda,
the dogs and I were alerted by the chirping of
our CO monitor. In our space we have a Nest
thermostat, a Nest Smoke/CO alarm as well
as our trusty NSI 3000 favorite. All of these
units are placed right next to each other. Only
the NSI monitor was detecting the presence of
carbon monoxide in our office. Thanks to the
digital display we could see that 18 particles
per million were in the air.
Well, what did we do when we ran into this
issue?
First, we isolated the possible sources of carbon monoxide from fuel burning appliances
by turning them off one by one. In our case,
we systematically turned off the offices rooftop
heater, shut off the water heater, and ensured
the unit heaters in the warehouse were not
on. We also made sure there had not been any
trucks running recently near an open doorway
of the shop.
Next, we got out our trusty tool, a Combustion
Analyzer, and after verifying the presence of
CO in the air did measure 18 ppm, we began
testing all of the equipment we had shut off.
We started with the water heater as this is the
number one cause of carbon monoxide poisoning in the home. The numbers on it looked
right in line and the system was burning cleanly, safely, and as designed. Secondly we tested
the rooftop unit, and bingo! there was the cul-

prit. Our nice cold winter and continued need
for heat had put some added pressure on it. By
adjusting the gas pressure and performing the
proper maintenance we got the system back in
line and operating safely.

Why am I telling you this story, and why

should you care?
Because the bottom line is that during the
entire time the fancy new connected to everything Nest systems were green indicating
no problem. Besides not sounding an alarm,
the digital displays of the Nest system read
GOOD, indicating on the app that it noticed
neither the presence of carbon monoxide nor
smoke. THE NSI 3000 MONITOR WORKED.
I had purchased Nest system(s) hoping to learn
about them and test their sensitivity levels. I
got my wish of being able to see this type of
product in action. Despite new technologys
showing innovation and progress in allowing
consumers to regulate a homes temperature
and monitoring the smoke and carbon monoxide levels while you are away, its not yet up to
where it needs to be. Google, Nest and other
off the shelf brands must improve their sensitivity levels to make sure inhabitants are alerted quickly. Their reliance on UL listed safe
levels is not enough. According to the World
Health Organization, long term exposure to
CO levels above 15 ppm in the air is dangerous
especially to infants, the elderly, and those
with medical and respiratory issues.
I can hear the wrap
it up music playing
in the background,
so Ill finish. The
Oscar goes to the
NSI 3000 low level
CO monitor. The
truth is that it comes
as no surprise to me.
The disappointment
is with the competition. I would have hoped
the industry as a whole would be taking more
proactive steps to improve their products and
ensure the safety of their customers. There
is enough information out there to warrant
quick implementation of stricter CO alert level
standards for all monitoring products.

Ahhh March is here! The time of year

when our bodies and minds have just
about given up hope for less cold and
snow. I am sure we are in for another
round or two, but I digress
At least March offers my favorite diversion of the year: the annual rite of creating the perfect bracket. Its one that
usually ends up covered with red strike
outs and ultimately lands at the bottom
of the waste basket. I know I have a 1
in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 chance of

creating a perfect combination but that

means there is still a chance. So, I can
dream right?
Anyway, as crazy as the NCAA Basketball Tournament eventually makes
me, it is still fun to try to beat your
friends in predicting the winner. And
since all of our readers are considered
friends, the challenge pool through the
Cozy Newsletter is open to you. Entry is easy, free and fun. All you have

also because of all the quality time I have been
spending with Jack.
He has become much faster and aware
of how to chase and climb on me. It is fun for
me, now that I have someone to constantly run
in circles after me for no other reason than the
thrill of the chase. I am working on my maneuvering and evasiveness, but so is Jack.
Anyway, I can not spend too much time
writing, as I can hear Jack calling my name. Back
to the races, talk soon!

Although Im sure it wasnt original to them,
my great grandparents used to say there were
two kinds of people in this world: The Irish,
and those who wish they were. So, all in good
fun this March, I want to relay these insider
ps Ive come across about Ireland or the
Irish so that we can all score a free beer from
someone/somewhere on the 17th (which we
will, of course, consume responsibly!).
Saint Patrick was born in England. He
was kidnapped from there and subsequently
enslaved in Ireland. He never drove out
snakes as the monks claimed. The Emerald
Isle never had any.
The most sacred relic in Ireland, the sta
of Saint Patrick, may not have been burned
during the Reforma on as records suggest it
existed in Elizabethan mes. It may s ll be
out there somewhere.
Leprechauns (Irish fairies) have been legend
since medieval mes when they were depicted
as tall, old men. Much dierent than the
modern version!
The Pookas are another type of Irish fairy,
but ones who are blamed for messing up
stu ranging from a simple farm fence to
shipwrecks.
Changelings are bad fairies, too. When
a female fairy produced an ugly baby shed
swap it out for a human good-looking
infant who, unfortunately, would grow up

to be happy only when misfortune or grief
happened in the home. This legend endured
for centuries, as evidenced in Shakespeares
A Midsummer Nights Dream as well as
men on in Gone With the Wind.
Many Irish surnames start with Mac or
O. These mean son of, or grandson of in
Gaelic.
Erin Go Bragh translates to Ireland Forever
Irelands oldest pub is Seans Bar in Athlone.
It opened 900 years ago.
80 million people of Irish descent (or 14
mes more than the popula on of Ireland)
live in other countries.
In 2014 the number of tourists to Ireland
exceeded the countrys popula on
Hook Lighthouse in County Wexford is site
of the oldest working lighthouse (since 1172)
in the en re world.
Among Irish contribu ons to modern day
warfare are the submarine, and the torpedo.
Halloween originated in Ireland.
The Irish rank SECOND in per capita beer
consump on - a er the Czech Republic.
Dated websites may say that Guinness is
the most popular beer in Ireland. Recently,
Dublins travel guides claim its Budweiser.
Dublin may have the largest Saint Patricks
Parade in the world, but U.S. ci es have a few
to cause them to do a bit of looking over their
shoulders! Boston and Chicago each a ract
hundreds of thousands of celebrants.
In the late 1930s Douglas Corrigan
became a U.S. folk hero. A er being denied

permission to fly from Newfoundland to

Ireland he filed papers claiming hed pilot
his aircra from New York to California.
He landed in Dublin instead. For this, he
was bestowed the nickname wrong way
Corrigan and we have him to thank for this
s ll-used household phrase.
But according to the late Stephen Bailey, the
road to Ireland from Chicago is marked in
green. From the Chicago River to the Illinois
River, then to the Mississippi, up the Gulf
Stream and across the Atlan c you can see
the beau ful green enter the Irish Sea, clearly
marking the way.
Slainte (to your good health), - John
