Giang Dinh
Giang Din h (Dinh Truong Giang) (nacido en 1966 en Hue, Viet Nam), es un destacado origamista de origen
vietnamita y actualmente residente en Virginia, EE. VV .. Ha publicado sus diagramas principalmente en los libros de
las convenciones de origami de EE.UU. Japn, y Canad, y en los libros de Nicols Terry.
Conocido ]XJr sus disefios simples y elegantes, Giang ha llegado a ser un maestro del origami mundial por las formas
similares a esculturas de sus modelos de papiroflexia. Eric Joisel consideraba a Giang Dinh un sensei del origami
contemporneo.

Informacin biogrfica
Giang Dinh nacido en Hue, VietNam, en 1966, emigr a los Estados Unidos con su familia en el afio 1989. Estudi
arquitecmra en Viet Nam y en Estados Unidos. Actualmente vive en Virginia, EE. UU., y trabaja para DEP, una.
firma de arquitectura.
Sus padres le compraron sus primeros libros de origam.i cuando estaba en segundo y tercer grado de la escuela
primaria (en los afios 1973-1974). Estos libros de origami fueron de Isao Honda primero, y luego de Akira
Yoshizawa. Despus de que finaliz la guerra de VietNam en 1975, su familia perdi todo, as que slo recuerda
algunos modelos tradicionales.
En 1996, tres afios despus de graduarse de la universidad, encontr en una librera el mismo libro que sus padres le
haban comprado ms de 20 aos antes: "The World of origami" de Isao Honda, de modo que compr el libro y
comenz a plegar de nuevo. Con el tiempo se uni a OVSA (Origami USA), descubri ms libros, asisti con
regularidad a las convenciones de origami y conoci las obras de origami de plegadores de todo el mundo.

Creaciones
Giang Dinh comenz a disefiar sus propios modelos de origan1i en el ao 1998. Sus creaciones presentan una clara
infl uencia de la pinmra y el arte Zen. En lugar de pliegues ntidos y precisos, que compara a la tinta, realiza pliegues
suaves, que para l son como lneas de lpiz.
Trabaja principalmente con papel blanco normal para que quien observe sus creaciones pueda concentrarse en la
form.'l pura y en la sombra de su obra. En la mayora de sus obras utiliza la tcnica wet-folding o plegado en hmedo.
Considera al origami como escultura en papel, y muchas de sus obras tienen el aspecto de esculturas semi-abstractas.
Las creaciones de Giang Dinh se pueden observar en su sitio web y en diversas galeras de sitios de origami.
Los diagramas de los modelos de papiroflexia de Giang Dinh se publican habitualmente en los libros de las
convenciones de origami (7th Tanteidan del 2001, USA 2004, USA 2005, USA 2007, Canad 2012). En el libro de
Nicolas Terry "50 hours of origanti + Vietnam Origami Group" se incluyen dos de sus diagramas, en tanto que en el

Cat images have always played

their part in my imagination .
Growing up in Vietnam, my
family owned a number of cats.
My feline pets first appeared in
a pastel sketch in 1988. and
other paintings and home-made
New Year Greeting Cards
thereafter. My 1999 New Year
card, the Year of the Gat, was of
a cat sleeping. Its sleeping body
formed the shape of a full moon.
After sketching and painting
many images of cats , it is only
natural that I should create an
origami sculpture of one ; a
I had not seen
dreaming
one in origami form (nor have I
seen a dreaming dog). The
result is here. I hope you enjoy
folding it.. I particularly enjoy
this origami model because it
has no reference points. Origami
models without reference points
are fun . Wrth each new fold the
result is different For this pfece,
I recommend wet folding; it will
help capture the softness of the

car.

People don't talk enough about Giang Dinh, and that really is a shame! Could it be because lntemauts are only
interested in designers who produce a lot of diagrams? Or in creators whose models include 250 steps and are
more likely to dumbfound their friends? Or maybe because his models look too simple to novices? Giang is one
of my favorite folders. Nobody else in the wortd is able to infuse as much emotion and sensibility into the art
works he presents to us. His work is very much in the same vein as that of Yoshizawa Sensei, where what
matters is to give life to paper, to suggest rather than mimic nature, while minimising the number of folds and
layers as far as possible. This runs contrary to the path taken by many of today's designers, and in my opinion
it is this that makes Giang's work interesting: what makes you happy, without caring about influences or trends.
Let's not be mistaken: Giang's models are VERY complex. Art is a label to be earned . It is more than likely that
the first results obtained with his diagrams will be , er... disappointing .. . You will need to try many times before
you can expect a satisfactory result, or even before you can be successful with wet folding. But if you are patient

such a desire for perfection, be it in the models, the pictures, the diagrams. simply gorgeous- or his Web site .
This is quite simply BEAUTIFUL, and to me this is the greatest compliment we can pay him. Keep filling us

This is a variation of my seated cat. The diagram is basic and two-dimensional. 1do hope
you come up with your own variation, even try a seated cat too. Wet folding is recommended for a

I did not choose to design a hippo . I saw it while playing with paper ( Sony to
disappoint many designers. :) )
After a few fol ds, I thought my design could be a rhino or hippo. But looking at the part
of the paper that would become the head, it was clear that the shape dictated I make a
hippo. If you add just enough details, mainly at the head, I think that is sufficient to say
"hippo. " Wet folding is recommended

With an economy of folds, Gieng Dinh achieves a love!y engel whose body is in the
share ofa heart. Obtaining a good result takes practice since there aren't exact
landmarks for the creases. !Is Giang shows in his photo diagrams, there are many
variations of the angel that )IUU can design )I"Ul'Self.

at Hangar-7 in 2005 . It was folded from

a square as you can see on the left

I was in a "flying" mood there.

I was playing with a piece of Origamido

paper given to me by Michael Lafosse
and this Angel was born . Stefan Weber

saw it and he said "A heart Angel ! "

You can see that it is similar to the
square "cousins" but the wing is "li ghter"
since it has only one layer of paper
instead of two . This is also an exercise

in 3d folding since the model is not flat
