As the next generation of lighting source, high power LEDs have a number

environment friendly and have a long life which reduces the cost of

LEDs have already replaced traditional incandescent lamps in traffic signal

applications for their high efficiency, low power consumption and long life.
LED Traffic Signals use both high brightness and high power LEDs connected
in a combination of series and parallel to build a LED cluster. To realize
specific luminous distribution intensity, an additional optical design (lenses)
is necessary. If traffic signals are driven by AC power, an AC-DC circuit is
required to convert AC to DC power that is suited for LED driver to drive LED

supply. Its unique architecture includes a 500 kHz Voltage Controlled Oscillator whose control
mode brings flexibility when an ORing function is a necessity, e.g. in multiple feedback paths
implementations. Thanks to its proprietary high-voltage technology, the controller welcomes a
bootstrapped MOSFET driver for half-bridge applications accepting bulk voltages up to 600 V.

The LM3401 is a switching controller designed to provide constant current to high power LEDs.
The LM3401 drives an external P-MOSFET switch for step-down (Buck) regulators. The LM3401
delivers constant current within 6% accuracy to a wide variety and number of series connected
LEDs. Output current is adjusted with an external current sensing resistor to drive high power
LEDs in excess of 1A.
For improved accuracy and efficiency, the LM3401 features dual-side hysteresis, very low
reference voltage, and short propagation delay. A cycle by cycle current limit provides protection
against over current and short circuit failures. Additional features include adjustable hysteresis
