ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT 1

TUTORIAL EXERCISE- (WBS & SCHEDULING)

PROJECT PLANNING (WBS)
1. Why is it important for the functional areas to be involved in the project from
the time of the original proposal?
2. What are the basic steps to design and use of the Work Breakdown Structure
(WBS)?
3. In what ways may the WBS be used as a key document to monitor and
control a project?
4. What are some benefits of the network approach to project planning? What
are some drawbacks?
5. What is the significant of the critical path in the project schedule?
Scheduling - CPM and Gantt chart
1. Given the following information about a project: Activity

Precedent
Activities

Duration
(Days)

10

B, C

B, C

D, E

(i)

Draw the AON network and determine the project duration.

(ii)

What is the critical path?

(iii)

Can activity B be delayed without delaying the completion of the

project? If so, by how many days?

2. Given the following information on a project: -

(i)
(ii)

Activity

Precedent
Activities

Duration
(Days)

C, E

Draw the AON network.

When will the project be completed?

(iii) Derive the Total Float and Free Float for all activities.
(iv) Draw the Gantt chart for the followings: - based on original duration
- based on the latest start time to latest finish time of the activities
- based on original duration, but using the activity free float (where
available)

3. Consider the following project: -

Activity

Precedent
Activity

Duration
(Days)

A, B

B, C

C, D

D, F

10

E, G

(i)

Draw the AON network.

(ii)

Derive the EST, EFT, LST, and LFT of all activities. What are the critical
paths and the project duration?

(iii)

Calculate the total float and free float of all activities.

(iv)

What happens to the critical path, project duration and total float (of
the activities) if activity D takes 7 days and H takes 6 days?

(v)

Draw the Gantt chart for the situations in (iv) above.

4. Consider a project with its activities as shown below:

Activity
A

Duration (days)

Predecessor

B, D

i) Draw the project scheduling network and determine the project duration, the
critical path
and the float for all activities.
ii) Which activity or activities have both free and interfering floats?
iii) What happens if you delay those activity/activities by taking full advantage of its
total float?
5. The activities in a project are as follows:
Activity

Duration (months)

Predecessor

A, C

B, C

C, E

D, F

i) Compute the project duration and determine the critical activities.

ii) Calculate the total float, free float and interfering float of the activities.
iii) What happens if you reschedule the project using the LST of all the activities?
(Notice the effect on the total float of the activities)
iv) Draw the Gantt chart using the LST and LFT of the activities.
