Release Overview

2.1

Introduction

Release 3.1 contains many new features and enhancements to the maxDNA system. Installing this release
to your maxDNA system will give you access to all of these new features.
Release 3.1 requires the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. The maxDNA release 3.1 has not
been validated on, and is not supported for, a workstation running Microsofts Windows NT 4.0
Workstations upgraded to Release 3.1 support DPU4Es and other Workstations running any version from
Release 1.7 to Release 3.1. The following DPU4E model numbers can be upgraded to Release 3.1;
PDP301 through PDP309. (part numbers 081818, 081819, 181832, and 181833) Older model numbers
PDP201 through PDP209 (part numbers 081830, 181830, and 181831) will require a hardware upgrade to
operate under Release 3.1. Consult with Metso Customer Care to schedule this upgrade. Once modified
they will operate properly with Release 3.1 and all earlier releases.
The upgrade instructions, contained in the following sections, assume that your system is at Release 2.x. If
your system is an earlier version, you will need to review the upgrade instructions contained in Release
2.1.1 Installation Instructions. The following are the major changes, which are assumed to have been
previously accomplished:
All network IP Addresses are 172.16.xx.xx and 172.17.xx.xx
Domains were created as needed and a WKS.ini file created
Either the default or custom security scheme is in place
DPU4E systems have a DPU in each domain set as a time sync master.
Program names were changed in the c:\custom\sbp\startup.ini to match current naming
conventions
Note: If your system utilizes ISAGRAF IEC-1131 with DPU4Bs consult Metso Automation MAX
Controls Customer Care for assistance. These instructions do not cover an ISAGRAF upgrade.

2.2

Repeat the above steps for each of the maxSTATIONs that are to be upgraded to Release 3.1.
Hardware upgrade the DPU4E to be compatible with Release 3.1. (If this is not done the DPU will
still operate with the upgraded Workstations but not support any new features)
7. Network Flash the DPU4E. Refer to the section CP Network Flash Programming Utility.
8. Run the maxTOOLS4E configuration program to update the database to the current version and
download the database to the DPU.
9. Test the DPU to verify that all functionality is as expected.
10. Update the remainder of the DPU4Es.
11. If you have any mxt files saved for the Virtual DPUs, they will need to be regenerated.
DPU backup considerations: A Version 3.1 DPU can not be warmed from a Version 2.x DPU (3.0 to 3.1
is OK). A configuration should be downloaded to an inactive DPU prior to takeover, which will result
in the outputs becoming frozen. The active DPU can remain in control while the inactive DPU is
upgraded and the configuration downloaded.

2.3

3.3.3

Upgrading maxSTORIAN Storage Room for Windows 2000

The Release 3.1 maxSTORIAN is designed to work with Windows 2000 and to utilize a feature of
Windows 2000 known as sparse files. Because of this change, the maxSTORIAN Storage Room must be
converted from Release 2.x compatibility to Release 3.1 compatibility. The change need be done only
once, but it must be done before the new maxSTORIAN is started up.
The following instructions assume that you have already performed all of the steps for installing Windows
2000 starting from scratch, have customized Windows for running maxSTATION software, and have
installed maxSTATION Release 3.1.
Restore your MxsStorageRoom folder, and all of its subfolders and files, to the hard drive on whatever
partition MxsStorageRoom was previously installed, so that it is ready for conversion.
You will not need to edit any of the files in MxsStorageRoom\Configurations; the text files do not need to
be edited, and LastConfig.csv will be changed by SRCheck, as described below.
You need to run SRCheck.exe (Storage Room Check), which is located in C:\MCS\History. NOTE that
maxSTORIAN must not be running when you are going to run SRCheck, because they will interfere with
each others operations. When you double-click on SRCheck.exe, you are shown the following dialog box:

22

Metso Automation MAX Controls Inc. 277701

Installation Instructions

In the Source Storage Room location, browse to your MxsStorageRoom (for example, the entry might
read D:\MxsStorageRoom).

Leave the Repair Blocks box checked, and check the Update last Config box.

In the Destination Storage Room location, browse to the root of your MxsStorageRoom (in this
example, the entry would read D:\).

Click on Rebuild all.

Finally, click Check

This process can take anywhere from, say, 10 minutes for a small storage room, to a couple of hours for a
large (nearly 4GB) storage room.
When SRCheck is finished, it produces a file called C:\Custom\History\SRCheck.log, and it opens Notepad
so you can see whether there were any errors which SRCheck need to repair.
The Storage Room has now been cleaned up, as well as converted to Release 3.1 compatibility, so you can
start up maxSTORIAN now.
Final Notes:
Once you have started up maxSTORIAN, and it is running well, you should Import this configuration back
into the maxSTORIAN Configurator, mxsConfig. If you do not do this, and make off-line alterations to the
old configuration and try to download to maxSTORIAN, there will be corruption in the Storage Room.
You should be aware that, once the first maxSTORIAN Trim occurs after conversion, the Storage Room
will now contain aisle files which are sparse. The Storage Room must not be copied to another drive,
whether it is a hard drive or CD-ROM, etc. If you attempt copying, the files will become corrupted. You
can only copy a Storage Room if you first run SRCheck on it with the Rebuild all option selected,
because SRCheck will compress the files by removing unwanted blocks from them.

Metso Automation MAX Controls Inc. 277701

Installation Instructions
If you have a maxSTORIAN backup pair, the two maxSTATIONs must always be at the same software
revision, because the Storage Rooms must be at the same revision.

3.5.1.4 Setting Up the Hard Disk

As part of a full software installation, use DOS fdisk and format utilities to format and partition the hard
disk with a single primary DOS partition of 32 MB. In addition, NO extended partitions
should be present. This is because non-DOS partitions will be implicitly created when
the DBM first runs to allocate all of the remaining disk space for event buffering and
maximum trend history storage.

Formatting the hard disk:

1. Insert the diskette labeled DOS Operating System disk 1, into the diskette drive.
Then cycle power, i.e., if power is on, turn it off. Then turn power on.
2. When the diskette finishes loading, a display asks you if you want to exit setup via
the <F3> key without installing MS-DOS. Press the <F3> key twice to get to the A:
prompt.
3. Type

fdisk and press <Enter> to run fdisk.

4. Type 4 to display information about the disk partitions (if any) that currently exist. All
partitions displayed must be deleted. Delete the non-DOS type first (if any), then all
the rest, with the last one being the PRI DOS partition.

3.5.2

DBM Upgrade Installation

New Only For Release 2.0 and later:

In order to use the new addressing scheme, and to have it work properly with Release 2.0 the DBMs must
have an IP Address that starts with 172.16.xx.xx. The system approach for changing addresses may vary
based on the configuration and needs of plant operation. Refer to the earlier section titled Upgrade
Summary for DBM Based Systems for a recommended approach.
To convert a DBM IP address perform the following:
Reboot each DBM to DOS. During boot, wait until the hard drive is identified, and the message about the
floppy drive is posted - then hit the <F5> key to defeat the execution of autoexec.bat. At the C:\ prompt,
edit setup.ini. One of the lines in setup.ini will say IP=2.99.99.xx (xx, the last octet, will vary). This is the
IP address of the 'A' network. Change this address to 172.16.160.xx, (that is, do not change the last octet of
the IP address), then save and exit. Reboot again for the change to take effect. The reason that you are
editing the address in this manner, as opposed to using the normal setup routine in the DBM, is that if the
setup routine is used, the DBM will wipe out its point database and all of its accumulated trend data.
Editing the address by hand in this manner will allow the database and trends to be retained.

Metso Automation MAX Controls Inc. 277701

Installation Instructions

To begin the DBM software upgrade:

1. Some DBMs have the CMOS setting to the state where it will not boot from an MS-DOS bootable
diskette. This must be changed for the following procedure to work. This is operation is BIOS specific.
Refer to the documentation that came with the system. Change this parameter to make the first boot
device be the diskette.
2.

Place the DBM Release diskette into the A: drive and cycle power (i.e., power off then power on) to
start executing the installation procedure present on the diskette. You should see the following

3.5.4

Changing the Time Zone in the DBM

The Time Zone must be set in the DBM to coincide with the time zone set under Win/NT on the
maxSTATION.
The WIN/NT (Microsoft) standard is:
If your zone is WEST Longitude, it denotes this by a MINUS offset
If your zone is EAST Longitude, it denotes this by a PLUS offset
And the DBM is based on the UNIX standard of:
If your zone is WEST Longitude, it denotes this by a PLUS offset
If your zone is EAST Longitude, it denotes this by a MINUS offset
So, basically:
Configure the Time Zone under the Win/NT Adjust Time function, denoting the sign and amount of
hours offset shown next to the zone selected.
Edit the Timeconf.dat file on the DBM to be the same amount, but the opposite sign.
Example:
Beijing, China

is

In Timeconf.dat enter

+ 8 under Win/NT configuration

-8.

To Edit Timeconf.dat
Boot the DBM to DOS.
Edit the file "timeconf.dat"
Locate the section of the file that looks like the following:
Change "Standard Time zone difference" to be the same amount as Win/NT, but the opposite sign.
4. This must be done for each DBM in your system.
######################################################################
# TIME ZONE INFORMATION
#
#

Configuring the AXIS Print Server

The AXIS Print Server comes with a default IP address and Print Server Name. The user may configure
these options. In order to configure these options, a single Windows NT workstation must configure the
Print Server and then each individual NT Workstation must complete section Windows NT Software
Configuration.
Included with the AXIS Print Server is a disk that contains the Windows Software. Supplied on the AXIS
Utilities diskette, the AXIS NetPilot is used to configure the AXIS Print Server. The print server only
needs to be configured once and NetPilot only needs to be installed on one machine for the specific purpose
of configuring the Print Server. In order to configure an AXIS Print Server, the user must determine
whether or not his/her network possesses at least one AXIS 560 print server. If so then follow the 560
installation instructions in section Configuring the AXIS 560 Print Server below. If not then follow the

Windows NT Software Configuration

For each NT Workstation that wishes to use the configured AXIS Print Servers, you must complete this
section.
Included with the AXIS Print Server is a disk that contains the Windows Software. Supplied on the AXIS
Utilities diskette, the AXIS Print Monitor should be used for network printing within Windows NT
environment. It allows AXIS Network Print Servers to be connected in the same fashion as a local printer
port and once installed, is automatically initialized upon system startup.
The AXIS Print Monitor needs to be installed on each workstation performing peer-to-peer printing. Once
installed, the AXIS Print Monitor then allows users to access all network printers, just as if they were
connected directly to their workstations. In order for the maxSTATION Network Printing to function
correctly, peer-to-peer printing MUST be installed.
