of the circumstances.
Any user of this NES either within MOD or in industry may propose an amendment to it.
Proposals for amendments that are not directly applicable to a particular contract are to be
made to the publishing authority identified on Page (i), and those directly applicable to a
particular contract are to be dealt with using contract procedures.
No alteration is to be made to this NES except by the issue of an authorized amendment.
Unless otherwise stated, reference in this NES to approval, approved, authorized and similar
terms, means by the MOD in writing.
Any significant amendments that may be made to this NES at a later date will be indicated
by a vertical sideline. Deletions will be indicated by 000 appearing at the end of the line
interval.
This NES has been reissued because of technical update and restructuring.

Physical Characteristics
a.

The material, as cast, is to conform to the chemical composition of BS EN 1652


CW 352H. In addition it must meet the requirements of Table 1.1. Following
acceptance of the analysis from the cast melt no further additions are
permitted.

The density of this material at 20 C is 8940kg m3.

c.

Where such material is required for use in welded construction, a sample is to


be taken from the edge of the plate at right angles to the direction of final rolling
and a check analysis is to be made to show that no segregation or lack of
homogeneity has occurred. The check will only be required where specified in
the Tender or Contract Documents.

Hardness
a.

Manufacture
a.

1.3.1

The hardness must not exceed 90 HV.

The sheet, strip and plate are to be produced by hot or cold rolling with
subsequent annealing. For flat products subsequent rolling may be necessary
to achieve flatness tolerances.

Heat Treatment
a.

Since the copper nickels are susceptible to metallurgical damage by excessive


oxidation or sulphur contamination, extreme care is to be exercised over all
heating operations carried out during the production process. Where it is
necessary to use oil or gas fired furnaces, strict control is to be exercised over
the furnace atmosphere and soaking time. The sulphur content in any fuel used
for heat treatment is not to exceed:

Gas: 0.7g/m3

(2)

Oil: 0.5% by weight

Direct flame impingement is to be avoided.


b.

The furnace charge is to be supported on clean firebricks or metal skids, and


care is to be taken during furnace charging and discharging operations to avoid
contact between the charge and the furnace walls.

All traces of oil, grease or any other source of sulphur contamination are to be
removed prior to any heat treatment.

d.

The maximum furnace temperature for heating stock is 1060 C.

Surface Condition
a.

Surface defects may be removed by grinding or machining providing that the


material remaining is not below the allowable thickness tolerance. Dressed
areas are to be faired smoothly into the surrounding material and the bottom
radius of the dressed area is to be at least 3 times the depth of the defect. Surface
imperfections such as handling marks, straightening marks, roll marks and
scale pattern are not to be considered as injurious provided that they do not
reduce the thickness below the specified tolerance.

Dimensions and Tolerances

a.

The sheet, strip and plate are to be manufactured to the dimensions stated in
the Contract. Edges of plate, sheet and strip are to be left in a condition that
will not cause injury to personnel when handling them.

Tolerances
a.

Except where special requirements are stated in the Contract, dimensional


tolerances specified in BS EN 1652, are to apply.

b.

The flatness of individual plates when required for heat exchanger and
condenser tube plates is to be within the tolerances given in Table 1.2.

Analysis
a.

1.5.1.2

A full analysis is to be made from a sample taken from each cast and from each
batch of the As Supplied sheet, strip or plate.

Hardness tests
a.

Samples for test are to be prepared as specified in BS EN 1652, and tested in


accordance with BS EN ISO 65071, except when otherwise stated in the
contract.

b.

The test samples are to be in the annealed condition and must not be
mechanically worked (other than being machined to the shape of the test piece)
before being tested.

Re-tests
a.

Should any of the original test specimens fail to meet the test requirements
detailed in this NES, two further samples from the same batch are to be selected
for testing. One sample is to be taken from material immediately adjacent to
where the original test sample was taken, unless that sheet, strip or plate has
been withdrawn by the supplier.

Inspection for flatness is only required for heat exchanger and condenser tube
plates and is to be made by placing the plate on a flat-surface table and applying
a straight-edge and measuring the depth of arc between the straight-edge and
the plate.

Visual-Optical
a.

All material is to be dimensionally checked against the Contract Documents.

All surfaces and edges of finished material are to be visually inspected, assisted
where necessary by the use of x 5 magnification optics. All imperfections are to
be identified on the material and recorded on the QA documentation.

Liquid Penetrant
a.

In cases of doubt, the visual examination is to be supplemented by liquid


penetrant testing to NES 729 Part 4 to show the plate to be free from surface
flaws, cracks, laminations or other defects which will prove detrimental in the
further use of the plate.

The hardness values of the test pieces are to conform with Clause 1.2.

Re-tests
a.

Both of the re-tested samples are to conform to Clause 1.2 of this NES. Should
any of the re-tests fail, the batch represented by the test pieces does not meet
the requirements of this NES and is to be rejected.

Each sheet, strip or plate is to be smooth and free from surface defects. Dressed
areas are to be seen to be faired smoothly into the surrounding material.

All sheet, strip and plate are to be free from surface flaws, cracks, lamination
or other defects which will prove detrimental.

Quality Assurance Documentation


a.

Each consignment of sheet, strip or plate is to be accompanied by Quality


Assurance Documentation containing a record of all the measured results from
the tests required by Clauses 1.5.1.1a.1.5.1.3a. together with a Certificate of
Conformity which refers to the acceptance standards detailed in Clause 3.1. The
Certificate of Conformity is to carry a reference number or sufficient other
information to positively relate the certificate with the relevant sheet, strip or
plate.

b.

Records sufficient to prove adequate quality control, full material traceability


and the relevant results of analyses and tests are to be retained by the
Contractor for at least 5 years after delivery.

Identification
a.

Unless otherwise stated in the Contract Documents, all sheet, strip and plate
is to be identified by the manufacturer by printing directly on to one surface of
the material using an ink, which will not have a deleterious effect on the
material. The markings are to be not less than 5mm high and are to run along
the entire length of the material, the maximum distance between markings is
not to exceed 300mm. The markings are to be positioned centrally for strip and
not less than 150mm in from the edge of sheet or plate. Markings are to be as
follows:

Ship numbers, manufacturers name, dimensions of sheet, strip or plate


or additional markings as may be required by the Contract Documents.

b.

The requirements of Clause 3.3a.(2)(5) may be applied by securely attaching


a label to the material.

c.

Where the material width exceeds 1000mm the information at Clause 3.3a. is
to be repeated on the same face 150mm in from each side and run along the
entire length of the material.

Packaging
a.

Except where otherwise stated in the Contract Documents, all sheet, strip or
plate is to be packaged in accordance with the manufacturers normal trade
practice and to ensure that no damage occurs during transit.

b.

Each package is to carry a label marked with the following identification details:

B.1.

For the purpose of this NES the following definitions apply:


Acceptance Authority

This is as specified in the tender, contract


document or order. Where this is not known,
enquiries are to be directed to DPA, NA145.

Batch

Sheet, plate or strip of the same dimensions,


produced by the same process from the same
cast.

Cast

A cast is:
a.

the product of one furnace melt, or

b.

the product of one crucible melt, or

c.

the product of a number of furnace or


crucible melts where such are aggregated
and mixed prior to sampling, or

d.

in continuous casting, 250kg or fraction


thereof of metal poured, and
when a heat treatment is required the
product of one furnace heat treatment
load.

e.

Certificate of Conformity

A certificate requested by the purchaser and


issued on the basis of tests carried out on the
manufacturing batch from which the material
supplied has been taken.

Plate

Flat rolled product of rectangular crosssection


with uniform thickness greater than 10 mm
Flat rolled product of rectangular crosssection
with uniform thickness from 0.2 mm up to and
including 10 mm, supplied in straight lengths,
usually with sheared or sawn edges. The
thickness does not exceed one tenth of the
width.

Sheet

Strip

Flat rolled product of rectangular crosssection


with uniform thickness from 0.1 mm up to and
including 5 mm, manufactured in coil and
supplied as sheared coils, transverse wound
coils or cut to length, usually with slit edges.

Contract Requirements
When Defence Standards are incorporated into contracts users are responsible for their correct
application and for complying with contractual and statutory requirements. Compliance with
a Defence Standard does not in itself confer immunity from legal obligations.
Revision of Defence Standards
Defence Standards are revised as necessary by up issue or amendment. It is important that
users of Defence Standards should ascertain that they are in possession of the latest issue or
amendment. Information on all Defence Standards is contained in Def Stan 00-00 Standards
for Defence Part 3 , Index of Standards for Defence Procurement Section 4 Index of Defence
Standards and Defence Specifications published annually and supplemented regularly by
Standards in Defence News (SID News). Any person who, when making use of a Defence
Standard encounters an inaccuracy or ambiguity is requested to notify the Directorate of
Standardization (DStan) without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and
appropriate action taken.
