Safety:
BORIC ACID- Hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of eye contact (irritant), of
ingestion, of inhalation.
Handle the chemicals with care.
Wear lap-coat and safety glasses while performing the experiment.
First Aid Measures
Eye Contact:
Check for and remove any contact lenses. Immediately flush eyes with running water for
at least 15 minutes, keeping eyelids open.
Skin Contact:
In case of contact, immediately flush skin with plenty of water. Cover the irritated skin
with an emollient.

Experimental error- While carrying out the experiment, Boric acid did not dissolve in
rubbing alcohol as per the flow chart and thus could not be identified.

DISCUSSION:
Following are the ten compounds for which tests were carried out: Cornstarch, Calcium
Sulphate, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Carbonate, Sodium bicarbonate, Sodium
chloride, Magnesium Sulphate, Boric acid, Sodium hydroxide and Sucrose.
The identification tests included
Solubility test for cornstarch
Colour tests with iodine and phenolphthalein for CaSO 4, CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaoH.
Gas bubble test with vinegar for CaCO3, Na2CO3, NaHCO3.
Precipitation test with NaOH for MgSO4.
Heating test for NaCl, Sucrose.

CONCLUSION:
The qualitative analysis for the identification of 10 household compounds was
conducted as per the flow-chart in the chem. lab manual.
The unknown sample-4 was found to be CaCO3 because it is insoluble in water and
gives gas bubbles with vinegar.
