INTERIM DEFENCE STANDARD (FORMER NES) - INVITATION TO COMMENT
Defence Standard Number: 02-570 Part 2 Issue 2 INTERIM
Title: Guide to the Design of Sound Reproduction Equipment and Public Address

Systems :Part 2 Guide to Design of Public Address Systems

The above Defence Standard has been published as an INTERIM Standard. Interim Defence
Standards are suitable to be called up in contracts and have the same legal status as full standards. In
addition this standard is considered to be technically correct, but it is necessary to use it and get user
feed back on its suitability before reissue as a full standard. Interim Standards are reviewed after a
year and where necessary amended. They are then normally reissued as full standards. Users are
therefore invited to forward any information or comment and experience on the application of this
standard. These will be collated and forwarded to the sponsor to aid amendment and issue of a final
version.
The purpose of this form therefore is to solicit any beneficial and constructive comment that will
assist the author and/or working group to review the INTERIM Standard prior to it being converted to
a full Standard.
Comments are to be entered below and any additional pertinent data which may also be of use in
improving the Standard should be attached to this form and returned to the above address.
No acknowledgement to comments received will normally be issued.

MILITARY STANDARDS/REQUIREMENTS

3.1

General System Requirements

3.1.1

General
a.

3.1.2

3.1.3

A portable Public Address (PA) system enables audio broadcasts to be made in

large areas, such as ships hangars, which cannot receive normal recreational
broadcasts.

Requirements
a.

In addition to voice broadcasts from a local loudspeaker, a ships PA system shall

provide for Sound Recording Equipment (SRE), cinema and internal
communications broadcasts.

b.

The complete system shall consist of a transportable kit, or kits, each containing
a limited number of easily moved units plus an equipment case to hold minor items.
The number of such kits shall depend upon the size of ship and other requirements.

Responsibility for Supply of Materials etc

a.

The Contractor shall normally supply all the materials and components needed for
manufacture, including North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) codified
items. Any components or ancillary assemblies which it is proposed to supply for
embodiment in the equipment shall be stated in the contract documents.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS/GUIDANCE

4.1

System Design

4.1.1

System Configuration
a.

Figure 4.1 illustrates a typical PA system with a variety of inputs. Two PA kits may
be operated as one installation by connecting the two amplifiers with a slaving lead
plugged into the auxiliary jack sockets. To give flexibility to the siting of the
equipment, pairs of loudspeakers may be connected in series or parallel. Full
operator instructions, including the master/slave arrangement are provided in the
equipment case.

4.1.2

Sound Recording Equipment Operation

a.

The PA equipment may be used as a temporary extension to the Sound Recording

Equipment (SRE) system. The SRE output is taken to a socket box situated as
appropriate, e.g. in a hangar and then connected either to the PA amplifier or to a
control, public address set. The control, public address set comprises a volume
control and two-channel programme selector switch. A circuit diagram is given
in Figure 4.2. This method may also be used to extend the main broadcast system.

5.

An output from a cinema projector may be fed to the amplifier with cinema selected
for greater sound output.

The present PA kit meets all current requirements.
