Eurozone

Statement on the European Council

Monday 23rd February 2015

Click here or on the image above to watch Conor's question to

the Prime Minister.
The text of the exchange was as follows:
David Cameron, The Prime Minister: Of course, not being in the
euro and not being a creditor of Greece, we do not have as much say
as countries that have lent vast amounts of money to Greece and that
see that money at risk. There are areas where we can and do help.
For instance, Treasury officials have helped the Greek authorities to
modernise their tax system, so that they actually collect tax from
people who live in Greece, and those officials should do so again.
Conor Burns Conservative, Bournemouth West: We appear to
have emerged at a near consensus, albeit born of hindsight, that it is a
very good thing that the United Kingdom is not in the eurozone. Has
the Prime Minister taken the time to reflect that many of those who are
issuing dire warnings about the consequences of renegotiation and
trusting the British people in an in/out referendum are the very same
people who advocated our immediate membership of the single
currency? Will he undertake not to listen to them, as there is a chance
that they are as mistaken today as they proved to be then?
David Cameron, The Prime Minister: My hon. Friend makes an
important point. It was noticeable that the British Chambers of
Commerce, which is one of the biggest business organisations in
Britain, far from being against a renegotiation and a referendum, came
out in favour of a renegotiation and a referendum. Since we
announced the renegotiation and the referendum, investment from the
rest of the world into Britain has not dried up and there has not been
uncertainty; we have seen record amounts of investment from China,
India and America into Britainoften more than into other European
countries.

Tesco Helping Hands winner revealed: who

has won competition cash?

Conor Burns and Kinson Tesco Manager Trevor Henstridge

present staff and volunteers from Cherry Tree Nursery with their
prize.
A charity that helps people with
severe and enduring mental
illness has scooped a 2,500 prize.
Cherry Tree Nursery, which is based at the New Road Roundabout in
Northbourne, provides sheltered work rehabilitation and is marking its
25th year.
On Friday it was crowned the winner of the Helping Hand competition,
run by Tesco, in partnership with the Daily Echo, to mark the opening
of the new store at Wimborne Road, Kinson.
After nominating six finalists via the newspaper more than 1,600
nominations were received for 118 different organisations shoppers
then voted in the store for their winner.
The competition was so popular that the shortlist was expanded to six
good causes, with the five runners-up winning 500 each.
The finalists were Homes 4 Heroes, Lewis-Manning Hospice, The
Bourne Academy, Dorset Dog Rescue, Cherry Tree Nursery and
Home-Start.
Store manager Trevor Henstridge was joined by Bournemouth West
MP Conor Burns to tell excited Cherry Tree Nursery volunteers that
they had bagged the top prize the MP said it was fitting that an
organisation deeply rooted in the community had won.
Jessica Davies, nursery manager at Cherry Tree, said: We are
absolutely over the moon to have won.
It means so much to us that people from the community voted for us
and wed like to thank everyone at the Tesco Kinson store as well as
all their customers for this incredible donation.
Trevor Henstridge said: Im thrilled with the response that we had to
the Tesco Helping Hand competition. Our customers and the readers
of the Daily Echo really got behind it, which was great to see.
Hopefully, it marks the start of a really positive relationship with the
local community.
Sally Teixeira is working as the stores Community Champion.
Trevor added: The Helping Hand competition was a fantastic way for
us to mark the stores launch and our commitment to the community of
Kinson. I would encourage any schools, charities or community
groups to get in touch with Sally if they are interested in working more
closely with us.

Culture Secretary joins battle against

Navitus Bay offshore wind farm
Jessica Shankleman, www.businessgreen.com
Friday 20th February 2015
Savid Javid writes to planning inspectorate warning that project
could undermine UNESCO World Heritage status of Jurassic
Coast
Conservative Culture Minister Savid Javid has waded into a row over
plans for a giant offshore wind farm off the Isle of Wight, arguing it
would undermine the World Heritage Site status of the Jurassic Coast
if approved.
The Round 3 Navitus Bay Wind Park, being developed by EDF
Energy and Eneco, would see between 100 and 200 turbines installed
off the coastline, delivering a capacity of 630MW to 970MW.
Now it has emerged that Javid wrote to the Planning Inspectorate
(PINS) earlier this month after speaking to local MP Conor Burns, who
has opposed the plans.
In his letter to PINS, Javid urged officials to give "full consideration" to
a warning from UNESCO's advisory body that the project could risk
the area's World Heritage status.
"The [International Union for the Conservation of Nature] IUCN feel
that the wind park would significantly impact on visitors' experience
and appreciation of the property in its wider natural setting," he wrote.
"They assert that the development would put the UK in breach of the
World Heritage Convention were it to be built, which has the potential
to put the area's World Heritage Site status at risk. This would, of
course, be a highly undesirable outcome."
Both English Heritage and Natural England, which advise the
government, have said the project would not put the World Heritage
Status at risk. However, Javid chose not to mention this in his letter to
the Planning Inspectorate.
In a separate letter sent to local MP Conor Burns, who has
campaigned against the plans, Javid says he has now done
"everything possible" within the law to make the planning authorities
aware of the potential heritage and tourism impacts of the project.
"English Heritage and Natural England... have both expressed the
view that the wind park will not cause significant harm to the
Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage Site and would not
constitute a breach of Article 2 of the World Heritage Convention,"
Javid wrote to Burns.
"However, in my letter I urged the Inspectorate to ensure nonetheless
that the heritage and tourism implications of the proposals are fully
considered."
It is unclear what impact the letter could have on the plans. Late last
year, the developers decided to submit a scaled down planning
application for the wind farm, containing only 106 turbines, that will
now be considered alongside the original application for the larger 194
turbine scheme.

Frozen screening is a box office smash for

Bournemouths first community cinema

new
community cinema on Sunday for a special screening of hit Disney
film Frozen.
The free event was held at the Henry Brown Youth Centre, where a
14ft projector was installed following a long-running campaign by Cllr
Roger Marley.
The 73-year-old, who once ran Bournemouths ABC cinema, invited
families to the 180-seat venue and encouraged them to sing along to
the films catchy soundtrack.
It comes after he won financial backing for the project from the Big
Lottery Fund and the Regeneration Partnership for West Howe.
Its been fantastic and all the seats have gone, said Cllr Marley.
Its wonderful to see all the children here and it is one of those films
where they start singing along from the start.
I was brought up with the cinema, which was a hobby, and I was
lucky enough to be paid for it all.
I used to go around doing this type of thing with Dorset Moviola
around Dorset and Hampshire so I thought it was such an ideal thing
to raise funds and have this in West Howe for the benefit of the
residents and the children.
Among the invited guests was Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns,
who praised Cllr Marley for bringing entertainment for all generations
to the suburb.
This is a part of Bournemouth that for a very long time had a very
challenging reputation to some degree, he said.
That community focus and things like this are bringing out the real
underlying sense of community that was always there.
Ive heard from Roger Marley the whole way through and his
ambitions for this and how he has tried to get the funding for it.
This has been a journey that has been more than two and a half
years in the making.
