Introduction:
The use of op-amps as circuit blocks is much easier and clearer than
specifying all their individual circuit elements (transistors, resistors, etc.),
whether the amplifiers used are integrated or discrete circuits. In the first
approximation, op-amps can be used as if they were ideal differential gain
blocks; at a later stage, limits can be placed on the acceptable range of
parameters for each op-amp.
An Op-amp can be use as a comparator, a voltage level detector, a
zero voltage level detector, etc. In this project, we'll be using op-amps to
detect nearby cell phone activities. The simple circuit can detect any activity
of a mobile phone such as incoming or outgoing voice, voicemail, texting,
and data.
The circuit seems to work fine for 3G phones on any wireless carrier or
on newer 4G phones.
If a cell phone signal is detected the circuit will blink a LED and sound
a buzzer simultaneously. Keep in mind that the phone must be transmitting
and the only time a phone is transmitting is when it is receiving or sending
voice, text, internet or data.
Sensitivity can be adjusted on the circuit by adjusting the
potentiometer.

Methodology:
1. Prepare all necessary materials.
2. Using the circuit shown in Figure 1, etch a circuit design on a PCB. Make
sure there are no unnecessary shorted or open connections.

3. Using your soldering materials available, you can now permanently have a
cell phone activity detector.
Here is how the circuit works:

R1 and R2 form a voltage reference connected to U1-A Pin3.

R3 and C2 form a RC circuit. Any sudden energy picked up by the
antenna connected to Pin2 causes U1-A output Pin1 to change .
Pin1 output remains changed during the period of RC or the antenna
energy (cell phone radio waves) is removed.
R5 creates a reference voltage on Pin6.

R5 must be very carefully set by the user to an appropriate threshold above

the background noise present in the environment and below that of the
radiated noise from a nearby cell phone. The setting of R5 is critical and
must be adjusted with the greatest of small adjustment tweaks to find this
zone above the background noise yet not above the noise of a nearby cell
phone. Adjust the potentiometer until the LED is off with only an occasional
flicker. Again adjust the potentiometer very very very delicately until the

LED or buzzer is just barely off and only randomly blinking or buzzing from
only the light background radiated noise of your environment. Then your
circuit should detect 2G-3G cell phone activity easily.
Since Pin1 is connected to Pin5, U1-B output Pin7 turns on the LED and
the Buzzer.
You can experiment on the length of the antenna you want to use.
(Note: The antenna is a very important component of your cell phone
detector)
Conclusion:
An operational amplifier can therefore be used to sense signals that
are present nearby. In our basic studies we've only learned of having an
input that is connected by wires or any other conductor. However, this time
we've learned that we could as well enter a wireless input like signals into
our circuit.
In the circuit being used, at first, the operation was so normal, but when
certain noise signals came in through the input of our operational amplifier
the output was somehow being amplified into light and sound which were
actually more noticeable than the normal operation.
This application could therefore be used by teachers in catching students
who are using mobile phones during class hours. :(
*Note: The circuit only applies on certain 2G and 3G phones.
