hp OpenView

performance manager,
performance monitor and
performance agent
product brief

end-to-end resource and performance management

HP OpenView Performance products deliver a powerful end-toend resource and performance management solution. Whether
your environment consists of a single system or a large network
of systems, the fundamental goal is the sameto offer the best
possible level of service in a cost-effective manner.
HP OpenView Performance Manager, Performance Monitor and
Performance Agents help you achieve this goal by providing a
single interface for centrally monitoring, analyzing and forecasting resource utilization for distributed multivendor environments.
Furthermore, HP OpenView Performance seamlessly integrates
with HP OpenView Operations and Network Node Manager.

end-to-end
solution

a powerful, flexible solution

The HP OpenView Performance Manager, Performance Monitor
and Performance Agents combine to provide a powerful and
flexible distributed management solution. Has an application
stopped responding? Are end-user response times acceptable?
Are service levels being met?
The HP OpenView Performance products provide solutions
to these questions and more, while addressing distributed
management requirements in two main areas:

HP OpenView Performance Monitor receives and maintains a

list of performance alarms that occur anywhere in the distributed
environment. To troubleshoot, simply select the alarm in the
message log and watch as the HP OpenView Performance
Manager launches and provides detailed information describing
the exception condition, including a time-correlated view of
critical performance metrics needed to isolate the problems
root cause. In short, HP OpenView Performance converts enterprise-wide performance data into invaluable time-correlated
management information.

Performance management and problem resolution

problem resolution
The HP OpenView Performance Agent collects measurement
data to detect exception conditions. Exception conditions can
be based on individual metrics or combinations of metrics and
can be defined using both thresholds and duration, allowing
proactive detection of problems. For example, an exception
condition could be defined as occurring when a client/server
applications response times exceed a pre-defined threshold
or when CPU usage remains over 75 percent and wait queue
length is greater than 3 for more than 5 minutes. The HP
OpenView Performance Agent detects and alarms on all
exception conditions.

resource planning and service management

HP OpenView Performance provides the information needed
to determine how resources are performing and how they are
being used or misused. Providing both real-time and historical
data is key to planning activities.

The ability to create custom graphs and templates

containing any metric from any system for a singlepane-of-glass view of the environment

The HP OpenView Performance Agent, with its patented intelligent

collection technology, is installed on systems throughout the distributed environment. It collects, summarizes and logs resource and
performance measurement data from applications, databases,
networks and operating systems. Furthermore, the HP OpenView
Performance Agent supports the industry-standard Application
Response Measurement (ARM) specification, to measure actual
end-to-end application response times and transaction metrics.

The ability to produce hard copies of graphs, including

support for PostScript printers
Forecasting capability based on data collected by
the HP OpenView Performance Agent, including
linear, exponential and s-curve projections

Using this historical data, HP OpenView Performance enables

in-depth examination of resource utilization and performance
trends. With this information, you uncover bottlenecks, which
if unchecked result in poor service levels. By comparing activity
levels, you can balance workloads, allowing you to allocate
resources and deliver a quality of service that parallels the
business needs. Lastly, HP OpenView Performance data can
be exported in various formats, for use in capacity planning,
statistical analysis and spreadsheet applications.

hp OpenView performance manager for Windows

The HP OpenView Performance Manager for Windows is a new
Web-based analysis and visualization tool designed to analyze
performance trends of applications, systems and services. It utilizes
data collected from the HP OpenView Performance Agents and
several other sources to isolate performance bottlenecks and maximize resource uptime. In addition, the HP OpenView Performance
Manager for Windows provides:

hp OpenView solutions

Both a Web-based and Java graphical user and

configuration interface

HP OpenView solutions target specific IT management challenges

to solve todays pressing problems. Delivering swift results incrementally, the multiple solutions are the building blocks to a
complete IT management solution. The HP OpenView building
block approach meets emerging business needs with short-term
success driven by longer-term business objectives.

tables and forms
Flexible, ad hoc performance graphing for the HP
OpenView Operations Agent (7.0 or greater), HP
OpenView Performance Agent (formerly MeasureWare),
HP OpenView Internet Services, HP OpenView Reporter
and any ODBC-compliant data source

hp OpenView performance manager for UNIX

The HP OpenView Performance Manager for UNIX is a powerful
graphical analysis and planning tool that is designed to analyze
and project future resource utilization and performance trends.
It utilizes historical data from the HP OpenView Performance
Agents to provide:

Forecasting and planning capabilities via baseline graphs

Comparison and correlation of application and system

resource measurements
Zoom capabilities for a detailed look at metrics or
graphs for a specific time period
Multiple graphing options, including line, bar and pie
graphs as well as table-formatted output

Also, if HP OpenView Network Node Manager and HP

OpenView Performance are installed on the same system, the
HP OpenView Performance Monitor seamlessly integrates into
the NNM topology map. Once an alarm is received, HP
OpenView Network Node Manager identifies the operator
by changing the icon status of the offending device. The HP
OpenView Performance Manager can then be automatically
launched from Network Node Manager for additional
information on the alarm.

If real-time performance monitoring is desired, the optional HP
OpenView Performance Monitor allows operators to configure
custom actions on alarms. Upon receiving a performance alarm,
the operator can initiate the HP OpenView Performance Monitor
to automatically create a graph containing the relevant metrics to
enable the resolution of the performance problem. The HP
OpenView Performance Monitor also provides alarm filtering
by severity, type or system node and interval-driven alarm
status updates.
