Office Hours:
If you face any kind of difficulty with the course then please contact your teacher. Office hours
for each of the teachers are provided above for your convenience. You can contact her/him during
the office hours at her/his office for discussions.
Grading
Grades on this course will be based on your scores on the internal assessments and a
comprehensive final exam. Internal assessment comprises of class tests, midterm examination and
your regularity in attending the classes. The distribution of marks is as following
Class Test
Attendance
Midterm exam:
Final exam:

10%
05%
15 %
70 %

Class test
There will be at least one class test conducted by each of the teachers. It may be a surprise test.
These tests will be conducted during a regular class.
Midterm Exam
This is a centrally conducted examination normally conducted at the middle of the semester after
five/six weeks of classes are over. Please refer to the academic calendar for midterm exam
schedule. Full mark for this exam is 50 and time allotted is two hours. Units 1A, 2A, 3 and 5 will
be covered. There will be four questions each carrying 10 marks along with ten multiple choice
type questions carrying one mark each given in the paper covering the above units. You have to
answer all questions to get 100% credit.
Final Exam
Final exam is also a centrally conducted exam held at the end of the semester. Please refer to the
academic calendar for midterm exam schedule. Full mark for this exam is 70 and time allotted is
three hours. All the units will be covered in this exam but unit 1B,2B, 4, and 6 will be
emphasized.
. The tentative pattern of question is as following.
Group A (10 Marks): It will be a set of multiple choice type question covering all units. A
separate sheet will be provided with the question paper. You have to tick/encircle the correct
alternative and attach it with the answer booklets.
Group B (20 Marks): Four questions of 5 marks each will be given covering units 1A, 2A, 3 and
5. You have to answer all four.
Group C (40 Marks): Four questions of 10 marks each will be given covering units 1B, 2B, 4
and 6. You have to answer all four.
Note: there will be no alternative.
Separate answer booklets will be provided for separate groups.

Practice Material
The Practice Materials in PH 1201 are problem/derivation based. For each of the units there will
be a set of problems which will be provided to you by your teacher. We highly encourage you to
solve it as it may help you learn the subject and perform better in the exam as well.
Exam Schedule
Short Class test schedule will be announced by the respective teachers. These tests may or may
not be open book type depending upon the teachers choice. Note that the teacher can take
surprise test also without any prior notification. Schedule for midterm and final examination will
be announced centrally by the university authority.
Assessment Policy
Question papers will consist of problems/derivations similar to the worked out example problems
in the class, text book and the practice materials. Exams will be closed book. You should bring
with you a pocket calculator to work out the answers to numerical problems. Make sure that the
battery is charged! Cell phones cannot be used as calculators. No written or printed materials are
allowed. During the exams all cell phones must be turned off and kept stored away and out of
reach. Frequent checks will be made to insure compliance.
Full credit on exams will be awarded for complete solutions including drawing a figure and
deriving necessary formulas, if appropriate, and for numerically accurate answers with
appropriate units and significant figures. Partial credit may be given for correct derivations if the
answer is numerically wrong due to arithmetic errors. No credit will be given for equations
written down at random or for numerical answers that are not supported by a reasonably complete
derivation. The best way to prepare for the exams is to study the fundamental principles of the
concerned topics along with the example problems and to work out the problems given in the
practice materials in a regular basis. You should work as many additional problems from the text
books as you can. This is the best way to ensure your understanding of the subject.
Re-grading
For all the examinations covering class tests, midterm and end semester examination, graded
answer booklet will be accessible to you. Model answer to the questions will be displayed such
that you can compare your answer with the model one and come your teacher for a regarding
request. The answer script will be shown to you by the teachers of this course after checking your
answer script at a convenient date and time before publishing the result. You can place your regrade request during this time.
Academic Integrity
Students are responsible for abiding by the academic integrity policies of the University.
Academic dishonesty will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
Class Decorum
The main rule for class is consideration to your fellow students. No disruptive behavior will be
tolerated. No texting or phone calls are allowed. Laptops are not allowed unless specified by the
teacher.
