Overview
The module considers the major components of gas turbine
engines for aircraft applications, indicates their design
features and enables their performance to be estimated.

Aims and objectives

To describe the component design and operational limitations
of gas turbine engines for aircraft applications. Having
successfully completed the module, you will be able to
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

the design and operational behaviour of the major components in aircraft gas
turbine engine
the factors that limit the performance of these components
the way the various components interact with each other
the performance limitations of various types of aircraft engines based on the
gas turbine cycle
those factors that determine the transient response of a gas turbine engine

Transferable skills

An aeroengine is a highly complex system, the jewel of aerospace industry; its design and manufacture
requires a higher level of sophistication than other engineering products
Aerodynamics and thermodynamics knowledge and expertise are used widely in the design
The principles and problem solving skills used in aeroengine design can be used in tackling other
problems

Learning outcomes
1.

An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering

2.

An ability to design an aerospace system, component, or process to meet desired needs within
realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health, and safety,
manufacturability, and sustainability

3.

An ability to identify, formulate, and solve aerospace engineering problems

4.

An understanding of the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and

societal context

5.

A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning

6.

A knowledge of contemporary issues in aerospace engineering

7.

An ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for aerospace
engineering practice
