Who Opened Your Bottle Lid?

Most of you might have experience of buying a drink whose bottle lid was closed
too tight such that it would not open when you were thirsty. You would have asked
your friend to help you with it, which still wouldn't work out. Yet another friend could
open it at a couple of snaps then all the friends would have been surprised and
gave him a praise.
Let's think again about this situation. Was it actually the last person who opened it?
He would have simply twisted the lid without exerting much force. It cannot be that
it was that easy for him to open it which was so difficult for others. The lid would
have become loose while two other people tried to open it and finally loose enough
to open easily when the last person did it.
We can find a theory even from a simple thing like opening a bottle. If you have
made 99 steps, you should not give up to complete what you started. No matter
how hard it is, just one more step can take you to the final goal. Many people
often stop several steps before success. That is why the success always passes by
us. Are you letting your friend have the honor of opening the bottle lid at this
moment? If you are participating in something, never give up where you are
standing. Try hard to make just one more step to reach where the success is
waiting for you.

In Search of Diamond
An ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates was son of a sculptor. One day when he
was a child, his father asked him pointing at a rock, "Son, what does it look like
to you?"
"A rock.", answered young Socrates.
The father nodded at the answer from the young boy. Then he carved it into a
beautiful and asked him again,
Son, what does it look like to you?"
A beautiful woman."
The father smiled at the answer and continued to say,
"Yes, so there was a beautiful woman hiding in the rock."
An ordinary piece of rock turned into a beautiful woman after carved and trimmed.
It goes same for human. Even a non-talented seeming person will have his
advantages. Although it has not been developed yet enough, everyone has talents
to enlighten him. Though, you should not be satisfied with that you have talent
before you make sure it is a diamond. Look back at yourself and see if you ever
got disappointed because you found yourself not as good as your friends. It is
only matter of when you find your talent, whether a little earlier or later. Talent
looking better or worse has to do with it. Start seeing your talent and crafting it at
least little by little, then you will find a diamond in you sooner or later.

where the speed of change is very high. If the past industrial
world had been the age of boat racing where the leader and
teammates were cooperatively rowing in a calm stream, the
modern world would be the age of white water rafting where each
member has to sense rapid changes in a swift current. Thus, we
all need to be able to react well in the whirlpool of change on our

Writes a Touching Drama of Life!

There was an ordinary cellular phone salesman with impediment in speaking and
ugly looking. He dreamt of being an opera singer, but his condition would take
confidence away from him. He won a prize from a singing competition hosted by
a British broadcasting company in 1999, but got rejected when he auditioned for a
famous opera company later on. Yet he did not give up his passion to be a
singer, so he took short sessions of opera training twice in Italy. Though, fate was
not enough to let him accomplish his dream. He had a tumor removal operation
and broke his collarbone in a motorbike accident, which damaged his vocal cords.
His will was not weak, where he could forget the dream he had since childhood.
He stood back up and constantly practiced singing while working as a cellular
phone salesman.
Finally, the chance came to this ambitious and hardworking man. On June 18th
2007, he won in the first week of the British TV program, Britain's Got Talent and
proceeded to the final. Tilted and jutted fore-teeth, messy hair and unfashionable
dress would never convince judges and the audience to expect something from
him. However as he started singing, his voice woke them up to deep impression
and astonishment and they loudly applauded the volume and color of his voice.
His name is Paul Potts. The outcome was selling 300 thousand copies in 2 weeks
as his first album was released. This touching drama of his life clearly showed
people that prejudice from the world and numerous obstacles in life can be
overcome.
Andre-Georges Malraux said, A person who dreams for a long time, grows like the
dream'. Did you ever feel like throwing out your dream because of small
obstacles? He who keeps his dream will eventually see it come true.

Lance Armstrong Overcame Testicle Cancer and Became the

Winner
Lance Armstrong was a weak child, so he started doing the triathlon to gain
health. He was especially good at cycling and selected as a representative cyclist
at high school. He became a professional at the age of 16 and started being
spotlighted as he won a world championship at 22. Nevertheless, he was
diagnosed to have testicle cancer when he was 25 in 1996. Since the cancer had
already been transferred throughout lungs and the brain, an operation and
anti-cancer medicine treatment were inevitable.
While fighting cancer, he thought about life and death. In the mean time, he took
the work CANCER figuratively. That is to say, C was for Courage, A for Attitude, N
for Never give up, C for Curability, E for Enlightenment and R for Remembrance of
fellow patients. As an extension of this idea, he established the Lance Armstrong
Foundation for Cancer (LiveStrong) in 1997. Then he joined the Tour de France,
which is also known as Hell on Wheels, to overcome the cancer and regain
passion in life for a miraculous victory. Later on and until 2004, he became the
first to win 6 consecutive championships.
"Life, to me, is a series of false limits, and my challenge as an athlete is to

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Three Dreams

Arnold Schwarzenegger had been in poverty since he immigrated from Austria to
California, USA at the age of 15, with his father. This young man had three dreams
written and pinned on the wall in front of the desk; to become a film actor, to
marry a woman from the Kennedys and to become the governor of California by
2005.
He became an actor and married a Kennedy early and the dream to become
Californian governor by 2005 was shift ahead by 2 years when he surprisingly won a
by-election in 2003. However, it would not have been very surprising to a man who
had dreamed long about giving a speech to Californian people as the governor.
If you have a goal that you eagerly want and plan to accomplish, draw it on paper
in your heart. If you keep the specific description of your dream including characters
and surrounding scenes in it, to hit upon from time to time, not just abstract
imagination, the image will show its brilliant shape in real life some day.

Module 3. Core Value

Week 8. Best / Innovation
1. Before Starting

People say those who adapt themselves to change and keep a lead
will survive in the 21st century. Here, have you considered what dream
and passion you hold and whether you develop the spirit of challenge
and innovative will to reach the top in a field. Let's think about
conditions to be the best and the necessity of innovation. We will also
think about psychological properties making people refrain from
innovation.
2. Main Study Contents
1. Be the Best

1) Factors Making the Best

Dream: direction, target (eyes aiming at a higher position)

Passion: immersion, energy (pumping heart)
Challenge: effort, practice (restlessly moving arms and legs)

2) 10 Commandments to Be the Best

Find out who's the best in the area.

Keep a record of your achievements.
Take a note for every reward for accomplishment.
Find meaning even at the bottom.
Let all information flow.
Make a rival.
Never forget you are the best.
Participate only in areas you can be the best in.
Frequently analyze data.
Consider that you are serving for others.

Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest of the species that
survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is
the most adaptable to change." This tells us that adaptation to
change is an essential condition for survival. We need to realize
the priority of fundamental fright to trivial fright and step further
toward innovation.
3. Tips for Leadership Upgrade!

The Only Way Not to Fail

"Virtually nothing comes out right the first time. Failures, repeated failures, are
finger posts on the road to achievement. The only time you don't want to fail is
the last time you try something. One fails forward toward success." - Charles F.
Kettering
The perfect way to fail is never to challenge. A guru in psychology, Eto Nobuyuki
found a common factor of outstanding people after working as a counselor at an
enterprise over 20 years. There was only one common factor; they failed a lot. He
said, "Failure makes best memories. Especially when young, you had better make
miserable failures. Number of failing times is proportional to that of succeeding
times."
You will never wake up your potential if you are reluctant to try things because you
are afraid. Imagine yourself overcoming failure instead of kneeling down to them.
The glory of success will be there for you when you have the courage to fight
failure.

Week 10. Cases about Core Values of Enterprises

Success come through the people you know.

Success does not come through your knowledge, but through the people you know
and the images of you reflected to them. - Lido Anthony Iacocca, Previos Chairman
of Chrysler Motors Inc.
Andrew Carnegie said, "Financial success, is due 15 percent to professional
knowledge and 85 percent to the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and
to arouse enthusiasm among people.". This tells us that a person's wisdom and
capacity are finite and no one can maintain a business or achieve a goal alone. So
cooperation with others and convergence of wisdom is a prerequisite to success in
contemporary society.

There is an aquarium carp popular in Japan, Koi (Nishikigoi). When in a fishbowl,

this fish grows no bigger than 5 to 8cm. On the other hand, in a big aquarium or
a pond, it can grow as big as 15 to 25cm and even up to 90 to 120cm when
released into a river.
A Koi can become a petty fish or a large one depending on where it inhabits.
Dreaming is not much different from the circumstances a Koi is in. The bigger you
dream, the bigger it can grow. The scale of a dream is not limited. Successful life
always starts from a huge dream. Dreaming, never revealing its bottom, is an
infinite form of energy that emits passion to spur your challenge.
How big is your dream? Make it huge. Beyond Hanyang University, further than

1:100, the Ratio of Wealth and Ideal

An American company started a long term project of 20 years in 1960, to trace
and research students and ascertain what happens to them after graduating from
school. The main theme was the relationship between ideals and wealth. Can ideal
pursuers never be rich? Researchers first conducted a questionnaire in detail to
1,500 students, who were divided into two groups; 1,245 (83%) of them studying to
be rich and 255 (17%) studying to fulfill their ideals.
20 years later, researchers contacted the 1,500 students and the consequence was
as follows. 101 out of those 1,500 became millionaires, 100 of who were idealist
pursuers. This test tells us that an idealist pursuer will be more likely to be rich
compared with a money chaser. In other words, ideals and wealth do not contradict
each other.
Friedrich Nietzsche said, He who has a why to live can bear almost any how. A
why to live, that is, the ideal is a lighthouse that guides life. Without an ideal, you
cannot find direction. Likewise, without a direction, you cannot lead an affluent life.
You have to set a specific ideal and a goal in life.

How Are You Managing Life?

The author of No one's Perfect (Gotaifumanzoku), Otodake Hirotana had his limbs
as short as 10cm when he grew up. Thuogh he was very bright and merry when
young so was often called 'Napoleon'. Whenever other children asked him, "Why is
your body so?", he would be calm and answer, "Well, I caught a disease when
mom had me. So my arms and legs don't grow.". Then they would understand
right away and become his friends. Despite being unable to lead a normal life with
the challenged body, he went through normal education and activities including
baseball, basketball and swimming. He never considered himself unlucky. Rather,
he took it as a unique individuality different from others.
People often say, "I would have made a bigger success had the circumstances
been better.". They always try to find reasons of failure from circumstances.
However, Otodake, who made a success even in an extremely tough condition,
says "How you live overweighs how you were born.". Living enthusiastically rather
than blaming given surroundings, he consequently made a miracle of entering
Waseda, a high reputed university in Japan. As stone never turns into gold no
matter how eagerly you wish, given circumstances don't change. They never did,
never do and never will. What matters is yourself. Depending on how you
determine, poor circumstances could be merely nothing, and they can even
accelerate your development.

Attitudes of Succeeders and Failures

Let me talk about two 70-year-old senior women. One thought her life is near the
end. So she started wrapping up her life. The other yet thought age doesn't really
matter, but what she thought was actually important. So she decided to climb
despite her age of 70. She started climbing world famous mountains. Eventually
when she was 91, she happened to become the oldest woman to complete the
ascent of Mountain Fuji. She is the very Hulda Crooks, the one who performed a
miracle to start climbing at the age of 70.
The biggest aspect of succeeders is the way they see problems. Positive thinkers
will accept challenges through positive speculations and they are willing to enjoy
adversity. Such people start half succeeded. The courage in Hulda Crooks proves
this. This is where the difference between succeeders and failures comes from.
Succeeders keep controlling and managing their life all the way with positive
thinking, optimistic stance and variety of experience. Failures are the opposite on
the other hand. Their life is dominated all the time by failures and worries from the
past. Some will always say their present conditions were built by others, not by
themselves. Yet, our conditions are never made by circumstances. To be precise,
how to deal with life or what kind of life to lead is in our hands. Whether you
succeed or fail has to do with your own doctrine.
- Things to Discard While in Your Twenties -

We are in the last lecture of HELP1. We will look back at values

Goal Division Method for Winning a Marathon

Yamado Motoichi is a Japanese marathoner. He won gold medals in two world
marathon races, in 1984 and 1986. When he was asked about the secret to win
after winning two races, he answered, "Wisdom helped me beat rivals.". Years
later, he stated in his autobiography.
'Everytime before I had a race, I drove along the course to make an intensive
survey. I then inscribed marks of the landscape such as banks, tall trees, red
painted houses and so on. As I started trial running, I ran for the first goal. When
passed the first goal, I headed for the second goal. Dividing the route longer than
40km into small goals made it easy to run. I only set my goal at a finish line of
40 km when I was first not aware of this simple principle, so I would burn out
after 10 km of running. The goal made me exhausted.'
What is the propelling force pushing you forward without losing hope in boundless
ocean like life? Vision and goal for the future are it. A goal doesn't necessarily
have to be ambitious and big. Division of an abstract and vague goal into
practical, specific and small goals will smoothen it to proceed. If the goal is too
abstract, you will get lost in the middle of the processes, which will lower passion
and assertiveness. While going through these small goals one after another, you
will eventually find yourself going forward to a bigger vision.
When a goal is too big and abstract, it cannot be of help for you. it will push you
far away from your vision instead. Keep this in mind and try to set up small goals
in university life for the vision you want to accomplish in your life.
