CHAPTER 5

Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

This chapter provides answers to the questions stated in the first chapter, presents the
summary of findings, the conclusion drawn from the summarized findings, and also the
corresponding recommendations that were formulated as a result of the conclusion.

Summary of Findings
This study tries to determine the insights of Grade 8 students about how the study
habits affect their academic performance in English. Hypothetically, there is a significant
relationship between study habits and academic performance of grade 8 students.
Descriptive method of research and quantitative type research are applied in this study.
Frequency and percentage were used in statistical treatment. This study aimed to
answer the following questions:
1. What strategies do the students apply in making their homework/assignments?
2. What factors do the students consider to manage their time in studying?
3. How do the students prepare for the tests or exams?
4. How often do the students take down notes in the following? :
4.1. reading materials
4.2. class discussions
5. How do the students read books in English?
6. What motivates and demotivates the students to study?

Findings
Here under are the findings of the study:
1. The strategies that the students apply in making their
homework/assignments are as follows:
1.1 The students do their homework depending on what is the subject.
1.2 The students tend to pronounce the new words even though they arent sure
if they are doing the right thing.
1.3 The students create mental pictures in their mind when they read a book.
1.4 When the students are reading, they tend to concentrate pretty well all the
time.
1.5 The students are inspired to study but are overwhelmed by the amount they
need to accomplish.
1.6 The students sometimes prefer to study with loud music but it depends on the
music genre.
1.7 The students and their studying are affected when they dislike their teacher.
1.8 The students contact others for studying purposes because it helps them in
understanding complex information.
2. The factors that the students consider to manage their time in studying are
as follows:
2.1 The students always catch themselves wasting their time getting started on
the task of studying.
2.2 The students wait for the right moment before starting an assignment
because thats the cue when their mind is fully awake.
2.3 The students occasionally get distracted while studying.
2.4 The students schedule their study time on a day to day basis.
2.5 The students every so often notice their study time is interrupted by outside
distractions.
2.6 The students occasionally spend more time on the computer or watching TV
than they should.
2.7 The students spend a total time of one or two hours every night on average.
2.8 The students sometimes find themselves too tired or too sleepy to study
efficiently.
3. The test preparations and performances of students are as follows:
3.1 The students rarely review their notes or even turn their notes into test
questions.

3.2 The students at times choose to study with their friends when they have a
test because they find it easy to understand complex information because
they have someone who guides them along the way.
3.3 The students are usually tensed when they are conducting their exams, but
they do know everything is under control.
3.4 The students write what comes into their mind when writing an essay.
3.5 The students keep goals because they like to get a perfect score and as long
as they get a passing grade when they are studying.
3.6 The students can remember things only for a short period of time.
3.7 When the students try to remember large chunks of information, a speech, or
a story, it takes works but they can still do it.
4. The frequency of note taking of the students are as follows:
4.1 reading materials
4.1.1 The students occasionally review their notes each class.
4.1.2 Students seldom make notes as they read class materials.
4.2 class discussions
4.2.1 The students always take notes in class, keep up with the instructor,
and understand the concept at the same time.
4.2.2 The students always know what are the important stuffs to write down
and what the cues that these are the important stuffs are.
4.2.3 Students often put class notes or notes from texts into their own words.

5. Book reading strategies of students in English are as follows:


5.1 The students usually pronounce the words they do not know when they read
books in English.
5.2 The students read the materials twice because they are unclear on the
certain parts.
5.3 The students make sure to underline and highlight the important details when
they read a book.
5.4 The students always pronounce the unfamiliar words for them to acquire new
words.

6. The motivation and demotivation of the students are as follows:
6.1 The students are motivated to study because they want to prove something
to themselves.
6.2 The students study more when they find the material interesting and practical
to use in a certain subject.

6.3 The respondents top reason for not studying is the facilities at school are not
conducive to studying.
6.4 The students hate studying because, for them, school holds no interest and
they are a bit lazy to study.
