Europe is a destination which allows visitors to experience a host of different cultures with
ease. In winter, it offers some of the finest skiing in the world, and in summer, its beaches
attract visitors from around the globe.
The cradle of Western civilisation, Europe owes much of its wealth and significance to the
Mediterranean Sea. This body of water forms the southern border of the continent, and is
renowned for its picturesque islands and unspoilt beaches, as well as the classical ruins and
marvels on its shores.
A number of smaller seas are a part of the Mediterranean, and these include the Aegean
and the Adriatic. The coastlines of these in particular are littered with magnificent relics
spanning thousands of years of history.
The Aegean was plied by Homers heroes, and its shores Greece and Turkey today are
where the ancient Greeks consulted their oracles and the Romans built majestic temples
to honour their gods. Modern holiday towns such as Porto Heli on the Peloponnese and

EUROPE & THE MEDITERRANEAN

Bodrum in south-western Turkey, are surrounded by ancient ruins as well as natural beauty
as appealing today as it must have been 5,000 year ago.
The Adriatic played a more modern role in the fortunes of the Mediterranean, witnessing
the rise and fall of the Republic of Venice in northeastern Italy. This floating city of canals
and regal palazzos is today a fabled destination known to be one of the most romantic cities
in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Venice is home to the Piazza San Marco and
Saint Marks Basilica.
Also situated on the shores of the Adriatic is Montenegro a country famed for its natural
beauty and still a relative newcomer on Europes tourist scene. From the royal capital of
Cetinje and the quaint town of Budva, to the spectacular Bay of Kotor and peaceful Skadar
Lake, it offers visitors breathtaking vistas and fascinating history at every turn.
And then theres France, with its world-renowned cuisine and its superb skiing. The ski
village of Courchevel 1850 is situated in the heart of Les Trois Valles, the worlds largest
ski area. Now comprising four valleys, Les Trois Valles is known for beautifully groomed
slopes, seamless infrastructure and some of the best and most consistent skiing conditions
