Giving, The Guru Dakshina Way !
Some people find a novel way to show gratitude to their guru. Mohnish Pabrai, a US based
Computer Engineer turned investor saw a mentor in Warren Buffet. He followed his
investment model and made millions. Finally, when he thought that the time had come for
a Guru-Dakshina, he forked out $ 650, 100 (Rs 2.6 Cr) to have a charity lunch with his
guru, all the money going to Buffett's favorite charity, the Glide Foundation of San
Francisco.

IITians have given back in different ways. Manvinder Singh Banga, an IIT graduate in
mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi has brought glory to the country by being a global
figure, rising to President of Unilever's foods, home and personal care business. He has
been in the running for the top post at Unilever to succeed Mr. Patrick Cecau who is
retiring next year. He returns to the country in form of well acclaimed reputation of his
entrepunaral skills, employed all across the globe. Mr. Naga Naresh Karuturi son of
unlettered parents, who lost his both the legs when he was 7 years old, sailed through IIT
Madras on 25 July 2008 and gave back a lesson of hope to thousands in despair. He beams
with joy in his electric wheel chair having laid hands on a job at Google R & D.

The three medals won at Beijing could help correct years of frustration at India's poor
sporting performance. An olympic's gold could catapult sport to the fore front of a
nation's imagination. It was Abhinav's return to the country when he said it was India's
gold.

India pays a tribute to Thomas Bata who died at the age of 94 in Toronto. Although Bata
operates in more than 50 countries, India remains its favored market with Batas being
steeped in Indian culture and history. No wonder most Indians think it is an Indian shoe
company !

Dear Students,

I wish to share with you part of my life story which you may find interesting and motivating in some sense.

I did my basic schooling from a village nearly seventy kilometers away from Kota city. After completing my middle education, I rode 10 km daily
to Ramganj Mandi, a town better known for its stones, on cycle, to pursue my further education from Class IX onwards. I was totally ignorant about
what IIT was till then. I came to know about IIT, when I was in Class X, through my friend who gave me grandeur view of IIT.

From that point, I gathered more information about IIT, more books, more study material and previous years solved exam papers. I appeared in the
IIT-JEE, and in the very first attempt tasted success (in Hindi Medium) and entered IIT-Madras.

After passing out from IIT Madras in 1994, I joined B.H.E.L. While working in B.H.E.L. I was selected in IAS - Preliminary at first attempt. I left
B.H.E.L. to prepare for IAS- Mains and started teaching in order to have time for studies and also to raise a financial support. But teaching drew me
too close and with time, I discovered that I and teaching were made for each other. I abandoned the idea to join IAS ans instead, started working to
build educational set-up and sowed the seeds of my vision - Resonance.

I had nothing except self-confidence at that juncture. I had to face the challenges from the big-giants in the field of education with big
infrastructure. I had made up my mind that Resonance should be the leader in Education, particularly for IIT-JEE aspirants. This was the need of
the hour.

Today Resonance boasts of 3655 selections in the IIT-JEE in the last seven years (from its start in 2001 to 2008). The organization which started
with just three people today employs more than 500 persons. Resonance which made a very humble beginning from a three classroom building
now has ten buildings in Kota itself where it started operations. It has presence in the major cities of country in Delhi, Bhopal, Lucknow, Kolkata,
Nagpur, Jaipur as Study Centers and Chandigarh, Indore, Ranchi and Patna as Information Centers.

Diligence and discipline are two watch words I live by and these help me in fulfilling all my priorities and I expect all of you to essentially accept
them for you to be successful in life.

I will keep sharing with you on other important success parameters too.

Cover Story

Mohnish Pabrai's
serve of devotion, dakshana and duty.
M ohnish pabrai has such a great admiration for his guru,
Warren Buffett that he has bid for the last four years on
e-Bay for lunch with him. He missed each time but the
joint bid by pabrai and his partner Guyspier beat out others for the
much awaited lunch, held recently on 25 June 2008. It was like giving a
gift to his teacher on the Teachers' day as celebrated in India. He is the
founder and Managing Partner of the Pabrai Investment Funds, a group of
focused value funds in California. Since inception in 1999 with $1 Million
in assets, the Pabrai Funds has grown to over $625 Million in assets in 2007.

Pabrai invests primarily in smaller companies, those with a market cap in the
half billion dollar range, that are out of favor. The Pabrai Funds are a
close replica of the original 1950s Buffett Investment Partnerships. His
investment philosophy is comparable to that of Warren Buffett in the early
days of Buffett's investing career. He focuses on a company's intrinsic value.
Since inception, the Pabrai Investment Funds have consistently beaten all the
major indices and over 99% of mutual and hedge fund managers.

Mohnish Pabrai was born on 12 June, 1964 in Mumbai. After completing the
school education, Pabrai received a Bachelor's Degree in 1986, from
Clemson University in Computer Engineering, and graduated with senior
honors completing the 4-year degree in 3 years.

Mohnish is a visionary in both business and finance. He is admired for

knowing when to start and when to quit. In 1990, he quit his job as an
engineer for Tellabs in Chicago and abandoned his master’s thesis at
the Illinois Institute of Technology to launch TransTech, a systems
integration company, which he funded with $30,000 from his
retirement account and $70,000 from credit cards.
By 1999, Transtech, which had grown to 200 employees and $30
million in revenues, held no thrill for Mohnish. He sold it and got
in to Buffett's shoes. He became an unabashed fan of Buffett,
imitating him in almost every sphere of work, including
operating alone and unobtrusively to even out perform
Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway with establishment of his
investment funds.

Pabrai is the winner of the 1999 KPMG Illinois High Tech

Entrepreneur award given by KPMG, The State of Illinois,
and The City of Chicago. He is an active Member of the Young
President's Organization (YPO) and a charter member of The
Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE).

Mohnish Pabrai is among the most promising of a new

generation of value investors. He strongly believes in a
balanced life between work, family, and personal time. He is
an eager student and a prolific reader on a wide range of
subjects. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Harina and
children, Monsoon and Momachi.

Eureka! IIT’s B-plan Contest Goes Global

So long, we have heard about Indian management gurus strategizing for

international companies. Now, IIT Bombay is evolving management mantras to
woo more foreign entries for its business plan (B-Plan) competition ‘Eureka!’.

Says IIT Bombay’s entrepreneurship cell MD Ankit Agarwal: “This is the first time
a ‘cleantech’ prize would be declared for the two best entries in the field of
clean/sustainable technology.” Cash awards of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 70,000 will be
given for the top two entries (return airfare travel to Carnegie Mellon University,
Pittsburgh), and winners will be chosen to compete in the sustainable technology
track of the McGinnis Venture Competition, Carnegie Mellon University,
Pittsburgh, USA for additional prizes.

Global Conference ‘Pan IIT 2008’

IIT Alumni 2008 Global Conference is being held at IIT Madras, from 19th to 21st
December. With 3000 alumni participants from around the globe, a galaxy of eminent
speakers, and selected sponsors who are leaders in their industry, the 2008 Global
Conference promises to be the most impressive ever. The focus this year is to inspire
IITians to innovate and transform India. Six themes would be dealt with, namely, research
and technology, entrepreneurship, rural transformation, infrastructure, innovation and
education. The various interactive sessions to be held as part of the event will be centred
around these themes.

This year, speakers include:

• Finance minister P Chidambaram
• LN Mittal (founder of Mittal Steel)
• Carlos Ghosn (co-chairman, president and CEO of Nissan)
• Bob McDonald (COO, Procter & Gamble)
• Professor CK Prahalad (University of Michigan Ross School of Business)
• Stephen Cohen (senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution)

IIT-B director quits, to join US firm

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay Director Ashok Misra announced that
he had resigned from the prestigious position. He said that he would join a US-based
company in September.
The surprise announcement came at IIT-Bombay’s two-day Golden Jubilee
Conference held in New York. According to sources present at the event, Misra said
that his resignation had been submitted some time earlier and had been accepted by
the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
His departure comes at an unexpected time for IIT-Bombay, which is celebrating its
Golden Jubilee year. Misra has been with the institution for over six years, and had
two more years to go in his tenure as director.
IIT-B 1969 alumnus and RTI activist Shailesh Gandhi described the outgoing director
as a proactive entrepreneur.
“As a director, vice-chancellor and administration head, he had great vision,” Gandhi
said, adding that IIT-B had established several tie-ups with foreign companies and
built cooperative international relations during Misra’s tenure.
