PLANNINGYOURSURGERY
FIXINGTHEDATEOFYOUREYESURGERY

1. Patientmusthavealightbreakfastinthemorning.
2. Thepatientshouldtakeaheadbathinthemorningofthedayofsurgeryoranightbefore.
3. Aresponsiblerelativeorattendantmustaccompanythepatientforsurgery.
4. Thepatientmustbringalongallhisreportsandprescribedlistofcurrentmedicationsincludinganyother
medicationwhichthepatientistaking.
5. Ifthepatientistakinganymedicationforhighbloodpressure,cardiacproblems,asthma,ormedicineslike
anticonvulsantsetc,thepatientmusttakethismedicationwithafewsipsofwaterevenifaskedtocome
fasting.
6. InjectioninsulinorothertabletsforDIABETES(sugar)arenormallytobetakenjustafterthesurgerywith
meals.
Starttheantibiotictabletsanddilatingeyedropsaspertheprescriptiongiventoyoubythenurse/doctor.

Fastingtimeshouldbe12hourspriortotimeofsurgery.Patientmustnothaveanysolidorliquidsinthisperiodexcept
fewsipsofwatertotakeanymedicationsforhighbloodpressure,cardiacproblems,asthmaetc.
FORTHOSEONANTICOAGULANTTREATMENT
Ifyouareusinganyanticoagulantslikeaspirin,Ecosprin,LoprinetcStopit72hoursbeforethedateofsurgery.
IfusinglongactinganticoagulantssuchasWarfarin,ClopidogreletcStopthetablets7daysearlier.Thesamecanbe
restartedthedayafteryoursurgery.
IfyouhaveanyfurtherqueriespleasecallthehospitalandspeaktotheNurseforclarifications.
ACTIVITIESTOBEEXPECTEDAFTERSURGERY
1. Afterthesurgeryyouwillbeseenbythedoctorandmaygohomeshortlythereafter.Youmustnotdriveyourself
home!Pleasemakearrangementsbeforehandforaride.
2. Thedayofsurgeryyoushouldplantotakeiteasy.Generallythereisverylittleifanydiscomfortfollowing
surgery.Ifyoudoexperiencesomemildpain,youmaytakethepainkillersprescribed.
3. Youreyewillbepatchedaftersurgery.Youwillreceivespecificinstructionsattheendofsurgerybeforeyour
leavethehospital.Thedarkglasses/Protectiveglassesshouldbewornonetheeyepadisremoved,generallyin
thesameeveningofthesurgery.Itisadvisedtowearprotectiveglassesevenatnightandinbedforthefirst2
daysaftersurgery.Thisistopreventaccidentialrubbingoftheeye.
YouwillbeinformedofallpostoperativecareandinstructionsbytheNurseattimeofdischargealongwiththe
dischargesummaryandlistofpostopmedicines.
Improvementinvisionisgradual.Glassesaregenerallyprescribedwithin13weeksofsurgeryasperthehealing.These
glassesmayneedtobeadjustedlaterasyoureyecontinuestoheal.
ANYINCREASEINREDNESSORPAINORSUDDENDECREASEINVISIONNEEDSANURGENTCHECKUPWITHTHE
DOCTOR.Thismaybeasignofseriousinfectionintheeye.

SPECIFICPOSTOPERATIVEINSTRUCTIONS:
CLEANINGYOUREYE:

Forthefirstweekfollowingsurgeryyoushouldprotecttheeyefrominjury.Donotruborputpressureontheeye.
Takesmallpiecesofcottonwoolandplacetheminabowlcontainingwater.Boilfor15minutesandkeepthe
bowlcovered.Washyourhandswithsoap.Takeasmallpieceofthesterilizedcottonwoolfromthebowl.
Squeezeouttheexcesswater.Cleanthedischargearoundtheupperandlowerlidswithoutapplyingpressure
ontheeye.Thisisgenerallyneededinthemorningaslongastheointmentisbeingusedatbedtime.Fresh
cottonistobeboiledtwiceadayifneeded.
PUTTINGEYEDROPS:
Neveruseapin/needletoopentheeyedropbottle.Screwonthecaptighttoopenit.
Retractthelowerlidandinstillonedropoftheprescribedeyedropintotheeye.Eyedropsshouldbeusedas
pertheprescription.Only1dropatatimeisenough.
Keepbotheyesclosedforatleast10minutesaftereacheyedrop.
PROTECTINGYOUREYES:
Putondarkglassesthroughoutthedayforoneweek.
Wipetearsbelowthemarginofthedarkglasses.Donottouchtheeye.
Donotplacecottonwoolbetweentheglassesandtheeye.
Donotsleepontheoperatedsidefor2days.
Forthefirst5daysfromthetimeofoperation,takeabathbelowtheneck.Faceandhaircanbewashedafter5
days.Butavoidgettingwaterinsidetheeye.
ACTIVITIES:
Avoidstrenuousactivities.
Donotliftanyobjectsheavierthan10kgforabout5daysafterthesurgery
YoumaystartreadingandwatchingTVafter2days.Takerestfrequentlywithbotheyesclosed.
Manypeoplereturntolightworkimmediatelyaftersurgery,butpleasediscussyourneedswithyourdoctor
duringyourpostoperativevisit(nextday).
Askyourdoctoraboutanyspecificactivitiesyoumayhaveinmindasinleavingtown,driving,yoga,walks,gym
etc.
FOLLOWUPVISITS:
Pleasecomeforapostoperativecheckupasadvisedupondischarge.Generallythenextday,oneweekandonemonth
postop.
Asaroutinealloperatedeyesshouldbecheckedonceeverysixmonthsevenifyouhavenoproblem.
