Task 1 : Article review about journal The Effectiveness of Administration and Cocurriculum in Sport to the Involvement of Students in Vocational College
Malaysia .

Based on the article that I read, the researchers trying to find the association
between the level of commitment of vocational college directors and teachers with the
knowledge and skill levels of management in managing co-curricular activities in
vocational colleges in Malaysia. The researchers also want to identify the level of the
skills such as planning, guiding, implementing and evaluating. This topic is researched
by Melati Binti Yaacob and Hairul Nurasyikin Binti Haron . Both of them were from
Technical Education and Vocational Faculty in Universiti Tun Hussien Onn ,Malaysia.

This topic surely essential to investigate and should be understand because cocurricular activities actually develop the balance between spiritual and physical among
students and teachers. Furthermore, adoption of effective curriculum able to inculcate
leadership qualities among students which can lead their country in the future. Besides,
sport activities especially enhance the growth of self-intelligence covering all the
important aspects like mental and emotional development.

Hence, it is seen as a tool in order to promote unity among different races in

school and becoming a platform for the construction of generic skills to students.
Meaning to say, co-curricular activities do influence either overt and covert in the
development of an individual so that everyone can experience life perfectly. The
researchers believe that co-curriculum is a need to prepare opportunities for students to
improve the skills, knowledge and values which they already learned during the learning
process. Thus, they used the instrument such as questionnaires and data that has
been analysed using the Statistical Packages For Social Science knowingly as SPSS
software.

I think that their research methods are appropriate and adequate as they follow
the research methodology where as it consists the population and respondents. In
order to excel the research, they also use Average Perception Scores Schedule used
by Yoong Suan from Malaysia Science University as the indicator for this research.
Besides, Pearson correlation test also used to investigate the relationship between cocurriculum management and the level of student engagement. It is used to determine
significance on 0.01 levels and to see the strength between two variables that had been
mention just now.

The researchers also use statistical method like mathematical concepts and
formulas in order to analysis the random data. They use mean, mode, median and
range as the technique to put the analysed data in table form. Besides, Pearson
correlation is used and the report is based on hypothesis-hypothesis null. Then , they
claimed that the level of commitment of the respondents was high, the level of
knowledge of the respondents in curriculum management is moderate while the
respondents level management is high. Thus, the result shown there is relationship
between the respondents commitment and the implementation of management skills.

Next, there are a few importance in this research. Co-curriculum management in

vocational collages is very important process in achieving the goals and objectives of
the co-curriculum. The results also clearly stated that there is a significant relationship
between the role of the directors as the co-curriculum manager and the level of
students involvement in extra-curricular activities.
The hypothesis also mention a significant relationship between role of the
teachers as mentor and student involvement in co-curricular activities. In addition, there
is also a significant relationship between the policy and amount of students involved in
extra-curricular activity.

From the findings, I have spotted some advance knowledge in the field where as
the researchers go through 310 teachers in vocational collages in Johor, Malaysia which
was randomly selected. The teachers also have different positions in the schools
curriculum organization. It means that the researchers can get different knowledge and
experience from the teachers. By the way , the researchers also get basic information
including age, name and while using questionnaires.

Other than that, the researchers have place their findings within the context of
on-going scholarly inquiry about this co-curricular issues. Based on my experience in
school, I realized the improvement of skills , knowledge and values when I joined the
co-curricular activities. For example, I had built my leadership skill after took part in
Scouts Camp .
There were activities which led me to the way on how to be a good leader and
how to manage the association. Besides, sports also help me to be more confidence
and never give up especially when I take part in any completion or tournament. For
sure, the co-curricular activities actually just not giving us a healthy body but also make
us excel in our studies.

When I stand as a teacher, this co-curricular activities can develop a good

relationship between teachers and students. This is based on my past time experience
during the practicum. Obviously, it also can build a mutual trust and understanding
among teachers and students. There are a lot of moral values which can be practice by
individual and also in group. If the teacher is so skilful and has many experiences, he or
she can evaluate the co-curriculum activities and provide a good role model for
students.

Abu Bakar Bin Mohd Husain , one of the researchers concluded that the role of
the teacher is one of the factors that can influence the level of student involvement in
school co-curriculum activities. Therefore, I believe that the role of mentor is important
to make sure the involvement in of students in co-curricular activities is high.

Basically, every research has it strength and weaknesses. For this research, I
consider the methods or technique that the researchers used to investigate and gather
the data analysed. Therefore, the researchers used quantitative method which is by
using Pearson correlation test. As I know, we can apply statistical tests in making
statements about the data based on this method because the data is in a numeric form.
These also include descriptive statistics like the mean, median, and standard deviation,
but can also include inferential statistics like t-tests or multiple regression correlations
(MRC).

Besides, quantitative method great strength is providing data that is descriptive.

For example, it allowing us to capture a snapshot of a user population. However, we
need to encounter difficulties when it comes to their interpretation. In addition, the
researchers of this article also support the others finding and study . They also make a
lot references to study this research in details. By comparing the others studies, this can
be a fine article which can be used by other researchers.

This article also has a few weaknesses which can be revise and improve to make
it more validity. One of the weaknesses is the researchers only focus on certain place in
Johor. They actually can pick the respondents in other states in Malaysia including
Sabah and Sarawak. Another weaknesses in the research is the instruments used by
the researchers where they only using questionnaires and data.

In spite of that, they also can use other instruments such as aptitude test,
observations form and interview schedules to advance the study of co-curricular issues .
The researchers also can improve the study without only focusing on Vocational
College. Hence they need to make their research become more reliability by conducting
the research in other colleges too.

In my real life situation, this findings also relate to something that I have
experienced . in my childhood, co-curricular management in religious school are very
different compared to other boarding schools such as MRSM and SBPI school. These
schools always be on the top as they not only focus on academic but also the
curriculum activities.

In my formal school, the administration just stress on students academic as they

want their students excel in the exam. I still remember that when our school was invited
to any national competition or tournament which just two or three month before the
exam, the headmaster do not give permission to students

to take part in the

competition or tournament. It just make some ethylic students upset and frustrated with
administration.

While in co-curricular activities, teachers sometimes busy with other works and
students in my formal school just doing their own activities during the co-curricular day.
Thus, students become lack of experience and knowledge about co-curricular activities
and sports. To me, it is important to students to improve their physical, mental , social
and emotional development in sports activities because the activities can be a platform
for them to promote their hidden skills and potential. For example, in my school, we just
have sports like volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis and netball. So, others
sports like hockey, rugby, cricket and swimming are not exposed to the students.

As the conclusion, the findings of the study

achieved the objective in the

research and have been answered by the researchers with very fine explanation. I
strongly believe that this issues should be the priority in developing individual
competency whether internal or physical development.
