Chapter 3 Installation Preparation and Connection

Installation
Insert the OPCOM200-2GEM card into the chassis, shown as the picture below. OPCOM200-2GEM
card can be inserted in to 16 slot or 4 slot or single slot chassis.

Optical interface connecting

There are 3 SFP interfaces on OPCOM200-2GEM card, which are MUX, GE1 and GE2 respectively.
As for MUX interface, please adopt 2.5G SFP optical module; as for GE1 and GE2, please adopt
Gigabit SFP optical module. All SFP optical modules are LC optical interface which should adopt
fiber media with LC/PC connector. The employed fiber should be 9/125um single-mode or
50/125um multi-mode.
In order to connect with CWDM passive multiplexer, MUX interface is also able to adopt to 2.5G
CWDM wavelength SFP optical module. .

Electrical interface connecting

The OPCOM 200-2GEM card has a 10/100M auto-negotiation Ethernet interface which should
adopt with CAT-5 twisted pair cable. This Ethernet interface is defaulted to work at auto-negotiation
mode. Besides, it is able to work at 100M full-duplex, 100M half-duplex, 10M full-duplex, and 10M
half-duplex mode.
The 1000M SFP interface for OPCOM 200-2GEM is able to adopt with electrical SFP module.
Please adopt 1000M electrical interface for OPCOM 200-2GEM with a CAT-5 twisted pair cable
shorter than 100m. Such electrical interface only works at 1000M full-duplex mode.

Chapter 5 Topology and Typical Application

Application in CWDM system

By using the OPCOM200-2GEM dual Gigabit Multiplexer, 2 Gigabit Ethernet channel can be
multiplexed into one 2.5G CWDM wavelength channel, improving the wavelength resource
utilization. Comparing with traditional wavelength converter OTU1 that only can carry 8 GE channel,
the dual Gigabit Multiplexer 2GEM is able to carry 16 GE channel in an 8 wavelengths CWDM
system. As the result, the wavelength resource utilization is doubled. The picture below shows that
2GEM carries 8 GE channel in a 4 wavelength CWDM system.

A dual-strand fiber only can transmit single Gigabit data by traditional Gigabit media converter.
While, 2 Gigabit data and one 10M Ethernet data can be transmitted transparently by 2GEM.
Therefore, comparing with 2 channel CWDM device, 2GEM improves the wavelength resource
utilization as well as reduces the cost dramatically.

FAQ

1Interface is Linkdown when ALS function enabled.

AnswerALS is short for Auto Laser Shutdown. Through this function, the optical interface would
automatically shutdown when no signal receiving due to the link layer problems. When both side enable the
ALS function, the transmit side would also shut down. Even if link layer returns to normal, both transmit
and receive side remain shut down, leading to unable to link up. This is a normal situation; please wait for
about 2 minutes. Since ALS has auto reboot function, it would open the optical interface again when the link
layer returns to normal. Otherwise, please disable the ALS function through network management.
2Packet loss or unable connection when the 10M/100M Ethernet interface is used for network management
AnswerThe 10M/100M Ethernet interface is defaulted to work at auto-negotiation mode. It has 10M
bandwidth inside. The connection between no auto-negotiation devices with the 10M/100M Ethernet
interface may lead to duplex mode mismatch, resulting in packet loss. Consequently, it is suggested to set
other devices to auto-negotiation mode when connecting with the 10M/100M Ethernet interface, or change
the working mode through network management. Please make sure that both side works at same mode.
