History:
Union Steel is a partnership firm that was established in 1964. It serves the
automotive and engineering verticals. The company operates with one plant
located at Pune in Maharashtra. The plant operates at 64% capacity
utilisation and works in one shift. The plant is equipped with machinery such
as press machines and tonnages. The products are mainly exported to
European countries. Union Steel showed a 30% revenue growth in the last
two years and expects to grow by 50% in the next two years. The company is
accredited with ISO 9001: 2000 certification. Union Steel intends to expand
its capacity and modernise in the near future

These are specialized mechanical processes used to generate mechanical
components used in the mechanical industry. Union Steel are specialized in
press components which require force on sheets of metal that are to be
pressed.
Shearing job is also done on aluminum sheets that are used in automobile
sectors and other industries.
Sheet metal component are used in heavy duty and other mechanical
components.

.As seen from the product gallery it can be seen that these components are
made from sheets of metals form AL, Stainless Steel, etc. These are available
in various thickness sizes as per the product.
Manufacturing process: It involves various operations ranging from single
press operation to double press operation. The table above explains the
details of each manufacturing operation.

Hydraulic presses are in the range of 100 tons to 400 tons of pressure.
Hydraulic press uses hydraulic oil to generate very high pressure to generate
this kind of force. With different size of cylinder and stroke various levels of
forces are generated. There are different types of presses for different
products that are utilized.
They are trying to bring the process in control of 6-sigma manufacturing. i.e.
less than 3 defects part per million.
With such high volume of manufacturing and with different products it is a
difficult task to get the production process in control of 6 sigma. With the
implementation of new ISO standards, it shall prove beneficial to improve the
process.

The company has focused on use of lean manufacturing tools to reduce the
wastage and losses. The components produced here have lot of scrap along
with them. It is necessary to for them to reduce the scraps and eliminate
wastage.
The company has TUV certification, which is for Total Quality Management.
