JJ GIMMICKED

THE ALCHEMIST T-261

COIN

You are going to create a gimmicked coin by sticking the metal disc to the
genuine coin you have provided. After your performance, you will need to
remove the metal disc from the coin. In order to make the disc easier to
remove, peel off the adhesive backing and touch the sticky surface repeatedly with your finger to weaken its adhesive strength. Neatly affix the metal
disc to the coin so that their edges are perfectly aligned. Finally, peel off the
protective film from the surface of the metal disc, and discard.
The gimmicked coin is now a double-faced coin. On one side it appears
to be a metal disc, and on the other side it appears to be a genuine coin.

The magician places a solid metal ball between

two plates and squeezes them tightly together.
Incredibly, the metal ball becomes squashed into
a flat metal disc. He rubs the metal disc with his
fingers and magically transforms it into a real coin!
This whimsical magic effect allows your audience
to watch you transform a metal ball into a genuine
coin. The transformation occurs in two stages, so
two different gimmicks are incorporated to enable
this effect. The squashing ball illusion utilizes a
unique property of the urethane foam sheet.

** Caution!

Handle the gimmicked coin with caution, and do not accidentally spend it with
the metal disc attached. When you have finished your performance, always remove the metal disc from the coin. Do not leave them permanently attached. If
the adhesive tape loses strength, you can replace it with your own double-stick
tape.

PROPS ENCLOSED

THE SECRET OF THE GIMMICKED PLATE

In the first part of the performance, you will appear to squash the metal ball
into a metal disc between two plates. In reality, the ball is pushed down
through the X-shaped slit on the surface of the gimmicked plate. After
being pushed down, the ball will be concealed under the plate due to the
stretchable fabric that accommodates its shape.

Frame: 2 types

Follow these pointers to make the X-shaped slit less visible to your audience.
1. Hold the gimmicked plate so that it remains horizontal, and rotate
the plate so that the X is oriented with a long side facing you.
2. Flatten out the surface of the urethane foam as best as possible.
Foam Sheet A:
This sheet contains
an X-shaped slit at its
center. A piece of cloth
is attached below.

Flat metal disc

Foam Sheet B:
An adhesive sticker
is attached at the
center.

3. Lightly push down the inner edge of the slit with your fingertip. The
depressed edge will be lower on your side than on the audiences
side, making the edge less visible.
4. Hold the plate in a position that is diagonally lower than your audiences line of sight.

Metal ball

You must provide your own coin to match the exact size of the enclosed
metal disc. Appropriately-sized coins include the American Presidential
dollar coin, a 2 Euro coin, and a Japanese 500 yen coin.

PERFORMANCE

7 Remove your right hand, and regrip the two plates from above using
the right fingers. Remove the plates from your left hand.

1 Hand the metal ball to your spectator and ask him to confirm that it
is solid.

2 Retrieve the ball and place it onto the upper plate in your right hand,
directly on top of the X-shaped slit.

Be careful to keep the hidden ball out of view

8 Open your left hand, palm up, to create a flat surface. Place the
stacked plates onto your extended left fingers, being sure to position
the hidden ball in the space between the second and third fingers.

3 Take the gimmicked plate with your left hand, and continue to hold
the other plate in your right hand. Keeping the coin hidden beneath,
position that plate above the metal ball.

9 Lift the top plate with your right hand, and display the coin with its
metal disc side facing upward. To your audience, it appears as if you
magically squashed the ball into a flat metal disc.

Be cautious to prevent the ball from rolling

** Caution!

4 Place the right hands plate on top of the ball, sandwiching it between

If the coin is not perfectly centered, the hidden ball may be visible when the top
plate is removed. To prevent this, lift the inner edge of the top plate up first, so
that only you can see inside. Check that the coin is perfectly centered before fully
removing the top plate. If the coin is off-center, reach in with your left thumb to
reposition it correctly. Once the coin is repositioned, you are free to remove the
top plate.

the two plates. Under cover of the top plate, the hidden coin is in
direct contact with the ball.

Advice

Place down the top plate gently to minimize any sound that may be created when
the coin contacts the ball.

5 Maintain light pressure on the top plate as you reposition both hands.
Your thumbs must remain on top, and other fingers support the bottom plate from below.

10 Follow these steps to transfer the gimmicked coin to your left hand.
1. Rotate your left hand so its fingertips point toward the audience.
2

2. Regrip the right hands plate so that the foam surface points upward.

ADDITIONAL TECHNIQUE

3. Contact the inner edge of the right hands plate against the outer
edge of the coin.

Learn this additional technique to enhance the coin transformation and

make it look even more magical. Your audience will believe that they have
seen both sides of the metal disc.
Return to step 11. Instead of placing the gimmicked coin at your

right fingertips, position the coin near the base of your right second
and third fingers.

4. Slide the coin inward using the edge of the right hands plate. The
upper plate ends up on top of the lower plate.

Curl your right fingers inward as you rotate your right wrist. This
action turns the right hand palm down and simultaneously causes
the coin to drop onto the right fingertips. The gimmicked coin will
land on the second and third fingertips, genuine coin side upward.
However, your audience will be unable to see it because the coin
remains momentarily hidden from view.

This sequence allows you to transfer the gimmicked coin from the plate
to your left hand, while keeping the ball out of view on the lower plate.

11 Pick up the coin from your left palm with your right fingers, and hold
the coin near your right fingertips.

Contact the coin with your right thumb and straighten out your
curled fingers. Place the coin onto the left hands upper plate, and
then move your right hand away. Your audience will believe that
you have flipped the metal disc over, and shown them both sides.
Continue the presentation as described in steps 11 and 12 to
magically transform the metal disc into a genuine coin.
Be careful not to show the genuine coin side

STORAGE SUGGESTION

12 Contact the gimmicked coin with your right thumb, holding it in place,

Do not store the metal ball in the gimmicked plate. Over time, the urethane
foam will curl downward at the location of the slit, and may not be able to
return to its original flat condition.

and turn your right hand palm down. Place the coin onto the left hands
upper plate but keep it covered by your extended right fingers. Make a
rubbing motion above the coin with your right hand, and slowly move
your right hand away from the coin. It should appear as if the metal
disc is gradually transforming into a genuine coin.

FINAL WORDS
Magic tricks that use money are intriguing to people. The allure of money
never fails to peak their interest. Start this trick by asking, Have you ever
wondered how money is made? With an introduction as irresistible as that,
your audiences will be eager to watch your performance.
American magician Alan Wakeling introduced the plot of transforming a
metal ball into a flat disc, and then transforming that disc into a coin, in his
marketed trick The Mint.

If you plan to use a 2 Euro coin, be aware that the flat metal discis
slightly larger than the coin. If you were to flip thecoin over andplace
it on the table, your audience will see the metal disc projectingfrom
below the coin. Therefore whenusing a 2 Euro coin, change theprocedure as follows. Place the left hands plates into your leftpocket,
freeing up your lefthand.

CAUTION
Be certain to read the following warnings.

Small parts are contained in this product. Be careful not to

accidentally swallow these parts as they may create a risk of

choking.
Keep all parts away from small children to avoid accidental
choking risk.

Place the gimmicked coin onto yourempty left hand, flipping it over in
the process. Show the audience thatthemetal disc has transformed
into a coin. The edge of the metal discis better hidden by the natural
curve of your hand.
