Ways to deploy operating systems

ThereareseveralmethodsthatyoucanusetodeployoperatingsystemstoConfigurationManagerclientcomputers.
PXEinitiateddeployments:PXEinitiateddeploymentsletclientcomputersrequestadeploymentoverthenetwork.TheoperatingsystemimageandaWindowsPEbootimage
aresenttoadistributionpointthatisconfiguredtoacceptPXEbootrequests.
Multicastdeployments:Inthismethodtheoperatingsystemimageissenttoadistributionpoint,whichinturnsimultaneouslydeploystheimagewhenclientcomputersrequest
thedeployment.
BootableMediaDeployments:Bootablemediadeploymentsletyoudeploytheoperatingsystemwhenthedestinationcomputerstarts.Whenthedestinationcomputerstarts,it
retrievesthetasksequence,theoperatingsystemimage,andanyotherrequiredcontentfromthenetwork.Becausethatcontentisnotonthemedia,youcanupdatethe
contentwithouthavingtorecreatethemedia.
StandaloneMediaDeployments:Standalonemediadeploymentsletyoudeployoperatingsystemsinenvironmentswhereitisnotpracticaltocopyanoperatingsystem
imageorotherlargepackagesoverthenetworkandinenvironmentswithoutnetworkconnectivityorlowbandwidthnetworkconnectivity.
PrestagedMediadeployments:Prestagedmediadeploymentsletyoudeployanoperatingsystemtoacomputerthatisnotfullyprovisioned.Theprestagedmediaisa
WindowsImagingFormat(WIM)filethatcanbeinstalledonabaremetalcomputerbythemanufactureroratanenterprisestagingcenterthatisnotconnectedtothe
ConfigurationManagerenvironment.
WewillfirstenablethePXEsupportfortheclients.LaunchtheConfigurationManager2012R2console,clickonAdministration,ServersandSitesystemroles,rightclick
Distributionpointandclickproperties.ClickonPXEtab,checktheboxEnablePXEsupportforclients.Thereiswarningboxthatappears,clickonYes.Thiswillenable
thePXEsupportforclients.WhenyouenablethePXEsupportforclientstheWindowsDeploymentServiceswillbeinstalledinthebackground.YouwillseetheWDSservice
runningwhenyouopenservices.msc.
EnabletheoptionAllowthisDPtorespondtoincomingPXErequests,thiswillallowDPtorespondtotheincomingPXErequests.
EnabletheoptionEnableunknowncomputersupport,anunknowncomputermaybeacomputerwheretheConfigurationManagerclientisnotinstalledoritcanbea
computerthatisnotimportedintoConfigurationManagerorthathasnotbeendiscoveredbyConfigurationManager.Todeployoperatingsystemstoanyofthecomputersyou
mustenablethisoption.
EnabletheoptionRequireapasswordwhencomputersusePXE,itisrecommendedtoprovideastrongpasswordforanycomputersthatusePXE.Thisismoreofan
additionalsecurityforyourPXEdeployments.
UserDeviceAffinityThisistospecifyhowyouwantthedistributionpointtoassociateuserswiththedestinationcomputerforPXEdeployments.Youhave3optionsforuser
deviceaffinity,
a)DonotuseuserdeviceaffinitySelectthisifyoudonotwanttoassociateuserswiththedestinationcomputer.
b)AllowuserdeviceaffinitywithmanualapprovalSelectthisoptiontowaitforapprovalfromanadministrativeuserbeforeusersareassociatedwiththedestination

b)AllowuserdeviceaffinitywithmanualapprovalSelectthisoptiontowaitforapprovalfromanadministrativeuserbeforeusersareassociatedwiththedestination
computer.
c)AllowuserdeviceaffinitywithautomaticapprovalSelectthisoptiontoautomaticallyassociateuserswiththedestinationcomputerwithoutwaitingforapproval.
FortheoptionNetworkInterfaces,selectRespondtoPXErequestsonallnetworkinterfaces.HereyoubasicallyspecifywhetherthedistributionpointrespondstoPXE
requestsfromallnetworkinterfacesorfromspecificnetworkinterfaces.IfyouwantaspecificnetworkinterfacetorespondtoPXErequestselectRespondtoPXErequestson
specificnetworkinterfaces.
PXEserverresponsedelayThisoptionistospecifydelay(inseconds)forthedistributionpointbeforeitrespondstocomputerrequestswhenmultiplePXEenabled
distributionpointsareused.Bydefault,theConfigurationManagerPXEservicepointrespondsfirsttonetworkPXErequests.
OnceyouhaveconfiguredtheseoptionsclickonApplyandclickonOK.

BootImagesBeforeyouproceedforOSD,youneedtomakefewchangestotheBootImagestoo.WhenyouinstallSCCM2012R2,youwillfindthatthereare2imagesthat
areinstalledbySCCM.BootImage(x64)usedwhenyoudeploy64bitOS,BootImage(x86)usedwhenyoudeploy32bitOS.
Thefirststepistoenablethecommandsupportonboththebootimages.EnablingthisoptionhelpsintroubleshootingOSdeploymentissues.Toenablethecommandsupport,
intheCMconsole,clickSoftwareLibrary,expandOperatingsystem,ClickBootImages.RightclickBootImage(X64)andclickonProperties.ClickonCustomizationtab
andchecktheboxEnableCommandSupport(testingonly).ClickonApply.

FormybranchofficepeopletodeployOSimagesIhave
AddedaservertotheSCCMasaDistributionPoint.
Distributedtheimagestothenewdistributionpointandareshownassucess.
CreatedaBoundariestogrouptheserverandclientaspertheipsunbet.NotethatsiteswiththerespectiveipaddressrangeexistsinADsitesandservices
WheneverwebootthePXEandselectthetasksequence,THEIMAGEISALWAYSDOWNLOADEDFROMTHEHEADOFFICEDISTRIBUTIONPOINT
