Purpose:
The purpose of the specification is to specify the requirements for Dell Piece Part Identification (PPID)
labels.
2.0
Scope:
This specification applies to Dell products worldwide.
3.0
Definitions:
PPID Piece Part Identification - A twenty digit bar code message that will contain the country of origin ISO
code, DELL Part Number, supplier identification code, date of manufacture and unique sequence number. Part
revision is identified by a separate three digit barcode.
Date Code Julian date format that represents when and where the part was manufactured by Dell P/N.
Serial Number Ties to date code and increments for each part built on that particular date code.
HRI - A prefix used in the Human Readable Information (HRI) denotes Dell Serial number. (Not included in the
barcode, HRI only)

from a materials and document standpoint for spec compliance.
2 of 29
Vendor ID (Used on Type J label) A Dell Accounts Payable issued code that identifies the supplier at a
parent/master level.
Vendor Location ID (LOC ID, Used on Type J label) A Dell Accounts Payable issued code that
identifies the supplier at a child level. The Vendor Location ID can be used for any one of the following
purposes: Mfg ID, Purchase Location (where POs are posted), Shipping Location, Payables Location or RTV
location. For the purpose of the PPID label, Loc ID generally refers to Purchase or Manufacturing location.
Manufacturing ID (MFG ID, Required on all PPID label types, except K, L, and S-V) - Dell issued
code that identifies the suppliers manufacturing location of production. For the purpose of the PPID label in
the event that the MFG ID is four characters, one leading zero shall be added to the number to make the MFG
ID a total of five (5) characters.
'Data Identifier'-A specific character string used, that defines the specific intended use of data immediately
following.
Example ---- <3S> = Package ID
Piece Part Label The label affixed to the individual part itself.
Outer Piece Part Packaging Label The label affixed to the packaging of the individual part, kit or
assembly. Outer piece part packaging could be shrink-wrap, poly bag, corrugate carton, ESD bag,

7.1 Country of Origin - Two alpha characters, which represent the component country of origin. See Section 5.0
Reference Documents for the URL of the ISO Maintenance Agencies for the ISO country of origin code table to
determine the appropriate two alpha characters to use. Important Note: The country of origin may be different than the
country of manufacture. Customs Agencies worldwide often use the U.S. the concept of "substantial transformation"
as a guide in determining origin. Substantial transformation occurs when an article that consists in whole or in part of
materials from more than one country is transformed into a new and different article of commerce with a name,
character, and use distinct from that of the article or articles from which it was so transformed. Contact Dells WW
Import Compliance Group at the website below for questions regarding commodity country of origin issues:
http://inside.us.dell.com/mfg/wwops/globcomp/importcomp/importinfo.htm or WW_Import_Compliance@dell.com
7.2 MFG ID - Dell issued code that identifies the suppliers manufacturing location of production. For the purpose of
the PPID label in the event that the MFG ID is four characters, one leading zero shall be added to the number to
make the MFG ID a total of five (5) characters. See sections 3.0 and 4.0, for additional Manufacturing ID information.
7.3 Date Code
The first character will be a number representing the last digit of the year of manufacture (2002 would be a 2). The
second alphanumeric character will represent the month per the table below. The third alphanumeric character will
represent the day of manufacture beginning with 1 through 9, and then with the letters A through V representing the
10th through 31st of a month per the table below.

PPID Label Type
Individual PPID label type, material, and location on the part will be determined by Dell Engineering
based on fit, function and where the part is consumed in the Dell factory. The requirement will be
defined on Dell approved drawings, and BOM. In general, drop in the box parts will use a Type A
label, and all others will use a Type E label.
8.1.1 Typical Label Types by Commodity
Below is an example of parts typically requiring PPID labels and their recommended label
types (not limited to list). This list is provided purely as an example, and is not meant to be
exhaustive or authoritative. In the event of a conflict between the Dell approved drawing and
BOM and this commodity list, the Dell approved drawing and BOM will govern.

Cords to be packed individually in a plastic bag with a type A PPID label affixed to the outside of the
plastic bag. Bag must be 4-mil minimum, and of sufficient size to allow a type A label to affix on a
flat surface. Bag will be clear with opening heat-sealed.
2.
Reference Dell Supplier Service Tag labeling specification PN 8M074 System Tag Specification.
3.
Supplier to follow this PPID specification, unless commodity specific specification states otherwise.
4.
8.2
PPID Label Placement
For all parts that will be consumed/reside on the back-end Pick To Light (PTL) boxing area or drop in
the box parts, the DELL barcode should cover the supplier barcode. If the supplier prohibits its
barcode from being covered then the DELL barcode label must be placed on the opposite side of the
supplier barcode. The DELL barcode must be the only visible barcode on the side, which it is placed.
8.3
Deviation
A deviation may be issued by the Dell GSQE for unique parts that do not meet the requirements of
this specification due to size, shape or other constraints for each label type. The supplier may request
a deviation by initiating an ECR through Agile. The Dell GSQE for that commodity shall review the
ECR deviation request with product engineering to determine a course of action, either allowing the
exception, or rejecting the request which requires the supplier to comply to the existing specification
within a given timeframe. Deviation approval must not affect content and format of each label type.
All approved deviations must pass FAI, which includes a scanning test.
