Introduction

If you saw bullying, what would you do to stop it? Would you stand by and let it
happen, take part in it or try to stop it? Not many pupils think about this, and thats
part of the problem.

Treat others the way you want to be treated, thats the Golden Rule and it
should be followed in every aspect of your life. If someone was in a position to stop
you from being bullied and did nothing, how would you feel? If you find that
unacceptable, you must do everything you can to stop others from hurting people.

Chracteristics of Bullies and Victims

If the children had been abused in the family it will be later transferred to the
behavior in school. If a parent yells at the kid, he initiallyfeels fear but later
solves the problem on his own.Parents should know that children represent a
picture of themselves, they must know that how to say sorry, to try to talk with
the child about certain problems before violence occurs.
Pupils who engage in bullying appear to derive satisfaction from inflicting injury and
suffering on others, seem to have little empathy for their victims, and often defend
their actions by saying that their victims have provoked them in some way. Studies
indicate that bullies often come from homes where physical punishment is used,
where the children are taught to strike back physically as a way to handle problems,
and where parental involvement and warmth are frequently lacking.
Students who are victims of bullying are typically anxious, insecure, cautious, and
suffer from low self-esteem, rarely defending themselves or retaliating when
confronted by students who bully them. They may lack social skills and friends, and
they are often socially isolated. Victims tend to be close to their parents and may have
parents who can be described as overprotective.

There are three kinds of bullying

Physical bullying
Physical bullying includes: hitting for snack (During the school breaks it often
happens that the children push one another accidentally. While playing or talking
some of the senior class students may abuse the snacks of the younger ones , kicking,
pinching and pushing and tripping in physical education classes (while the students
play ball games in PE class with it may happen that someone has been hit by a ball),
and damaging the property of others (using their crayons, notebooks, pencils etc).
Verbal bullying
Verbal bullying includes: name calling (Children will sometimes use verbal insults if
their classmates wear glasses, are overweight/skinny or much taller /shorter than they
are, if they wear clothes that do not match them), insults, teasing, intimidation,
racist remarks. Children who have not been taught to respect the diversity among

people, may hurt someone by condemning them because of obesity, hair color, clothes,
footwear, old books (which they have inherited from elder brothers / sisters).
Cyber bullying
Cyber bullying can be overt or covert bullying behaviors using digital technologies,
including hardware such as computers and smart phones and software such as social
media, instant messaging, texts, websites and other.
Cyber bullying can happen at any time. It can be in public or in private and sometimes
only known to the target and the person bullying. It includes:

Abusive or hurtful texts emails or posts, images or videos

Deliberately excluding others online

Nasty gossip or rumours

Imitating others online or using their log-in.

Other signs
Sometimes bullying can be far more hidden. The signs include:

Often alone or excluded from friendship groups at school

A frequent target for teasing, mimicking or ridicule at school

Unable to speak up in class and appears insecure or frightened.

BULLYING IN SCHOOL

Let`s name our character George. He`s a ten-year a old boy who is rather shy. He
doesn`t havemany friends and prefers standing alone in the school yard during the
brakes. The other boys, let`s call them bullies, have noticed George. At firts they try to
make frinds with him, to get his trust. Little by little, they ask him to lend them some
money. George agrees but later the amounts become musc higher than he can afford.
Very often he is hungry but still he doesn`t report that bullies to the teachers. After
some time bullies ask George to give them his mobile. He hesitates at first, but
knowing that there is nobody to protect him and that they can beat him, he gives in.
Later George became insecure, nervous, often misses lessons. He doesn`t have enough
courage to report the bullies to the teacher and to ask his parents for help. As for the
parents,he knows that he couldn`t get much help. His father is very violent, often
drunk, and his mother is seldom at home because she works all day to support the
family. Unless somebody observes this, George won`t be saved.

What if my child is bullying other children?

Many children bully the others while they are growing up. Most grow out of it with
the right guidance and support. Here are some things that you can do if your child is
bullying other children:
Talk to your child

Stay calm. Focus on the behavior, rather than the child.

Help your child think of alternative paths of action.

Work with the school to solve the problem

Many schools now use restorative approaches rather than punishment, where students
involved in the bullying situation reflect on the issues. The student who has been
bullying then has to confront the person they have bullied and look for ways to repair
the damage they have and restore their relationship.

What can you do if you`re being bullied?

All of the signs above mean that you need to make a move to stop the bullying.
Letting the situation go on is not good for anyone especially you!
Here are some things you can do:

Tell someone, even if you don't think it will help. Just talking about a situation
can help put it in perspective. You could talk to a friend; a parent; or a trusted
teacher who you know will take what you're saying seriously
Keep a record of incidents

Call the Police (031192)

Block senders

Keep messages by sending them to someone else

Change passwords.

Prevention measures
The school must not only respond to any violence that occurs in it already has an
obligation and that is working to do it does not happen, ie. to take preventive actions.
Certain obligations and preventative intervention in the activities of all employees
have at school, but the school is responsible and to establish a special team to
protection from violence.

Team for protection from violence

Team for protection from violence constitute a school counselor and psychologist,
individual teachers, representatives of students and parents, and can be enabled and
the school secretary, as well as experts outside the school, for example, from the
center for social work or the police. This team is tasked to monitor the situation in
school, plan and implement preventive measures to develop mechanisms to react and
participate in the resolution of each case of violence than those most innocuous, such
as the so-called first-level violence.

Information about the team members (names, contact numbers), as well as phone
numbers of relevant services (health center, ambulance, police station, the center for
social work) should be displayed at the prominent place, to make it accessible to
everyone.

Peer team
The school may form a so-called peer team, which consists of children specially
trained for creating a positive atmosphere in the school, recognition of bullying
behaviors and timely drawing attention to adults to bullying.

Activities on the Prevention of bullying - Prevention

Preventive measures consist of:

1. setting clear rules of conduct in the school, which will be strictly

enforced: employees must not cause or contribute to bullying, for
example, the disrespect of personality and rights of students,
inconsistency in treatment, biased assessment.;
2. continuous training of staff, students and parents to recognize bullying
and to respond to it appropriate, cooperation with the students during the
planning and implementation of prevention activities;
3. cooperation with parents, the local community and other institutions;
4. creating an atmosphere in school that bullying does not occur: response
to any attempt of bullying, the diverse range of free and extracurricular
activities through which students will be able in a quality way to spend
their free time to help children with behavioral problems, and the
mainstreaming of environment or learning;
5. physical and other prevention measures: duty staff, adequate lighting in
the building and yard, fenced and secure yard, constantly bypassing
school by school police officer, physical and technical security such as
video surveillance and the like.

***

What happens between the four walls of the classroom often remains a mystery. Only
the occasional shot with a mobile phone, a testimony to the atmosphere is far from
what it should be and that many things are out of control. Children can absolutely
everything to work to demolish the school, to insult the teacher, they do not come to
school, but they do justice in a particular way.

***

The "School without Violence" was initiated in 2005/06. Program implemented by

UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of
Health, Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, the Council for Child Rights of the
Republic of Serbia, Institute for the Advancement of Education, and since the school
year 2008/09 and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Youth and
Sports.

Conclusion
Bullying is a serious problem that can dramatically affect the ability of students to
progress academically and socially. In my opinion, the school staff primarily teachers,
psychologists, pedagogues should make all the efforts to stop the cases of bullying.
But first and foremost we sholud teach children to respect the others, to accept
differences. The whole society should take this issue more seriously. In any case,
prevention is better than cure. Once it has been done, they should cooperate with
the family members of both the bullied child and the bully, and resolve the problem.
