Application For A Work Permit

Checklist
Complete and place this checklist on top of your application.
Consult our website for forms and instructions, including a list of countries whose
nationals require a temporary resident visa: High Commission of Canada to Singapore.
Any document not in English or French must be accompanied by a certified translation.
Failure to submit all required documentation may result in the refusal of your application
or processing delays.
An interview may be required. You will be informed accordingly.
If a medical examination is required, you will be informed by an officer who will send
you instructions on how to proceed. The officer's decision is based on the type of job you
will have and where you lived in the past year. Do not undergo a medical exam until
advised by this office. Medical results may take up to 4 weeks.
It is normally advisable to wait until you receive the letter of authorisation to work in
Canada from the High Commission in Singapore before finalising travel plans.

You must submit the following items:


Application form [IMM 1295E], Education and Employment information must
be completed if you are 18 years of age or older (please provide
this on a separate sheet if additional space is required)
Family Information Form (IMM 5645), Please list your parents, spouse/commonlaw partner, children and siblings, whether or not they are accompanying you to
Canada. Applicants under the age of 18 must have their forms signed by a parent
or legal guardian
Two passport photographs for each applicant (meeting the requirements of
Appendix B Photo Specifications). Signed, dated and taken in the past six (6)
months. Write the name and birth date of the individual on the back.
Processing fee - Ensure that you have paid the correct non-refundable processing
fee in Singapore or Canadian dollars. Only cashiers order or bank drafts will be
accepted. Your name must be printed on the bank of the cashiers order or bank
draft
Copy of valid passport or travel document. Your passport must:

be valid for the duration of your stay as a visa cannot be issued beyond the
validity of your passport
have a minimum of two (2) completely blank pages (excluding observation
page)
be valid for at least six (6) months

Include copies of all cancelled or expired passports, if applicable


Proof of immigration status in the country in which you are currently
residing. If you do not reside in your country of citizenship, please provide a copy

of your permanent or temporary stay permit/work permit/study permit (include the


issue and/or expiry date)
Copies of Birth Certificates for minor children/Marriage Certificate/Statutory
Declaration of Common-law Union [IMM5409] as applicable.
Proof of sufficient funds: Bank documents (e.g. fixed deposits, bank statements
showing financial history and the account balance over the last three (3) months)
You are permitted to enter Canada on the understanding that you have sufficient
funds for your initial living expenses and other necessary costs in Canada
A copy of the Labour Market Opinion (LMO) from Service Canada/HRSDC.
Most temporary foreign workers require a Labour Market Opinion in order to
apply for a work permit. Your employer in Canada will obtain this for you.
Job offer from your employer in Canada on headed paper which indicates your job
title, duties, salary and dates of employment. Submit a copy of your contract if
possible. If you submit your application less than one month before you are
supposed to start work, submit a letter from your employer stating that you can
take up your job at a later date.
Evidence that you meet the requirements of the job offer:
If you are employed, a signed original letter on company letterhead from the
employer granting leave of absence
and including:

the applicants name, position, current salary and date of hire


the employers name and address as well as the telephone and fax number

If you are self-employed, evidence of your business (business registration


indicating your shares in the business, business license and financial documents,
e.g. profit and loss statement, balance sheet, etc.)
Photocopies of relevant education certificates, proof of professional
qualifications; photocopies of all school transcripts (starting at the secondary level)
certificates, diplomas, degrees, etc.
Original police certificate: You must obtain a police certificate for each country or
territory where you have lived for six (6) consecutive months or longer since
reaching the age of 18. Further instructions will be provided for applicants who
require a Certificate of No Criminal Conviction from the local authorities in
Singapore
Minor child(ren) who is/are travelling alone require notarized permission to travel
from the non-accompanying parent(s) and must carry written information about the
person who will be responsible for them. If the child is the subject of a custody
order or is travelling with one of his or her parents, proof of custody and/or
notarized permission from the other non-accompanying parent is required

Two (2) self-addressed adhesive labels with the applicants current mailing
address

If applicable, you must also submit:


Certificat dAcceptation du Qubec (CAQ) if you will be working in Quebec.
Schedule 1 - Application for a Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of
Canada (IMM5257 Schedule 1) must be completed, dated and signed if: When
filling out the form Application for a temporary Resident Visa made Outside of
Canada (IMM 5257), you answered YES to any one of questions 3 to 7 in the
section Background Information
If someone is assisting you in completing your application or you would like
someone to do business with our office on your behalf, completed Use of a
Representative [IMM5476].

Nurses, Doctors And Other Medical Professionals


Please note that you will be required to undergo a medical examination
Letter confirming eligibility for interim licensing/registration with the
regulatory body in the province to which you are destined in Canada (e.g. the
College of Registered Nurses or the College of Physicians and Surgeons.) Clinical
fellows destined to B ritish Columbia, Ontario or Alberta do n ot re quire a letter
from the regulatory body.

Intra-Company Transferees
Letter from employer explaining why your transfer is necessary and how you meet
the requirements.
Evidence of relationship between current employer and employer in Canada.

Provincial Nominees
Provincial Nominee certificate.

Post-Doctoral Fellows

Evidence of PhD completion (PhD certificate or letter from your university).

Visiting Researchers
Research proposal outlining research to be undertaken in Canada, goals of
research in relation to your academic pursuits in your own country, how you were
chosen, amount and source of any funding you will receive.
