10 Ways to create the Most Memorable Day Ever

Culture
I don't remember what I did yesterday. Do you? If you're
anything like me, a fog of ordinary enshrouds most of
your days. These days aren't bad (we remember the bad
ones!), just routine. Nothing special.
Today, I woke up wondering how I could make by day
extraordinary, one worth talking about on my death bed.
What is it that differentiates a ho-hum day from one that
will still be able to make me glow or blush twenty years
from now? On my most memorable days, human
connection and experience that pushed me beyond a
normal state of consciousness stand as the common
factors.
With these keys in mind, here are ten ways to transform
an average day into the most memorable one ever. I'm
challenging myself to cram as many as I can into one
day, and I challenge you to do the same. Are you in?
1. Face your fear.

Facing fear gets the blood pumping. Though we may not
particularly enjoy putting ourselves into uncomfortable
situations, confronting your fears fuels personal growth.
When we conquer a fear, we feel like we can handle
anything the world has to throw at us.

The brains incessant chatter is silenced and were free to

focus on the present moment.
Skydiving or participating in a comedy open mic night are
great options, depending on your personal fears.
Whatever happens, youre going to remember it.
2. The multisensory experience.

Create an activity that engages all (or most) of your
senses. Why? Strong sensory input can actually alter our
states of consciousness, helping to create powerful
memories.
Beaches and carnivals are great examples of the power of
multisensory experience. We create vivid memories of the
way these places feel, smell, look and sound. How can
you build a multisensory experience at home? Think
about an outrageous activity you want to do and then
add elements that touch each of the senses.
If you have a partner, the best memory-making option is
to stimulate all the senses during foreplay and sex.
Remember how exciting your first few times were with
your partner? Take it a step beyond that magic by
consciously focusing on each of the five senses. Think
long and hard about it. Now do it that way.
3. Costumes.

Body paint as costume

Why not work a costume into your day? Its bound to be
appropriate for some, if not all, of todays activities.
Costumes transport us outside of self-consciousness.
Were not ourselves; were in character. They help us feel
freer and bolder.
Our style tells a story to the world about the way we want
to be perceived. When we wear an outrageous or unusual
outfit, we give ourselves the freedom to explore different
aspects of our personalities.
If you look at the costumes in your closet, chances are
you remember every place youve worn them. Can you
say that about your regular wardrobe? Wear a costume
and youll remember today.
4. Express yourself.

Expressing emotions
On your memorable day, every time you talk to people
youre close to, tell them how you feel and why you
appreciate them. Get specific. Do you like the way they
laugh? That they always offer you half their sandwich?
That you know you can confide any secret and itll stay
safe?
My most powerful middle school memories all have to do
with a little ritual the candle my ten closest
girlfriends and I performed, as needed. Wed sit in a circle

and light a candle. Then, wed take turns telling the

person holding the candle every little detail about why
they were amazing. Every one of us would break down
crying during this ritual. I swear the candle got us through
these insanely tough years.
By gifting kind words to your friends and family, theyll
light up and so will you.
5. The unique experience.

Try something new. Never tried miracle fruit, the crazy
berry that makes beer taste like chocolate milk? Never
given Karaoke a go? It doesnt matter what it is, as long
as its a unique experience of you.
Any time we try something new, we bring our attention to
the present moment. We become more focused and more
aware, allowing us to write vivid memories.
6. Compliment strangers.

Its amazing how the positive interactions we have with
strangers energize us. Today, be that person that reaches
out and sparks the good mood in others. Love your hat.
You have a gorgeous smile.
Spread the love around to people who probably dont

often hear compliments from strangers. Stick with

number six all day long, and I bet youll have an amazing
day. You never know what might happen or who youll
meet when you open up to the people around you.
7. Learn a new trick.

Take an aerial dance class. Make pancakes from scratch.
Brew your first batch of beer. What have you always
wanted to learn but never taken the time to do? Todays
the day.
Learning a new skill requires us to focus attention on the
present. So often, were distracted by past memories.
How can we record new memories when our minds
simply replaying old ones? By engaging focus on what
were currently doing, we allow opportunities to create
fresh memories.
8. Reconnect with old friends.

Connecting with old friends
Think of three of your closest friends you havent spoken
to in months or years. Now call them. Reigniting
friendships will make you feel alive.
Human connection sparks powerful emotions. Talking to
friend you havent spoken to in a long time is likely to

take you through a whole range of emotions, from

laughter to tears. When your emotions are engaged, you
remember.
9. Take care of yourself or someone else.

If youre always taking care of other people, todays your
day to spoil yourself. Get a pedicure. Treat yourself to a
forbidden luxury. Or, maybe its time to help someone
else out. Do family, friends or neighbors need your help?
If not, volunteer at a soup kitchen or see if a local nursing
home welcomes visitors for residents in need of human
connection.
Whether you treat yourself or others, youll create an
experience worth remembering. Taking time to be kind to
yourself allows the chance to de-stress and to be in the
moment, giving you the opportunity to turn off the brains
white noise and to move into a different state of
consciousness.
Helping others builds human connection, opens the heart
and engages the emotions, paving the way for positive
memories.
10. Go to Burning Man.

The easiest way to do all these things in one day is to go

to Burning Man. Every day is an adventure and every
moment is memorable in Black Rock City. Creating the
culture of burning Man in daily life the spirit of
adventure and fearlessness- was the core inspiration of
this article.
Ultimately, creating powerful memories is the natural
result of leading an amazing life. Push your boundaries.
Think, create and live big. Boredom wont have a chance
to get its claws into you when you live this way.
