A 4G network revolution in a
compact, efficient package

Integrated LTE multi-platform base station

4G LTE connectivity means that a user can enjoy bandwidth

intensive applications while on the move. This is made possible
thanks to the network support for handovers and roaming.
Airspan solutions maintain a connection while the user moves
across cell borders, essentially handing off the service from one
eNodeB to the next.
Air4G eNodeB operates in a wide frequency range, from
700 MHz up to 3.8 GHz, including LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 12, 17,
20, 38, 40, 41, 42, and 43, supporting all channel sizes, from

Airspan Networks is addressing a

growing demand for LTE connectivity
worldwide. The use of mobile
broadband services is accelerating
at exceptional rates with increased
applications such as gaming, social
networking and video for mobile

Traditional split indoor-outdoor
architecture eNodeBs which
support multiple sectors are
being replaced by new, lower
CAPEX and OPEX, compact
eNodeBs. Air4G is such a
product. Its all-outdoor, compact
structure yields a lower power
consuming, greener solution
that is environmentally friendly.

INNOVATIVE RADIO TECHNOLOGY

Air4G employs software defined radio (SDR) technology, together
with two transmit paths and two or four receive paths, antennas
and GPS receiver all in a highly integrated, physically small and
light, all outdoor package. Air4G is optimized for working across
the entire 700 MHz to 3.8 GHz spectrum, maintaining its high
performance regardless of the chosen LTE band, and has been
designed to address the markets needs by supporting the current
and future air interfaces thanks to its SDR technology.

FLEXIBLE ARCHITECTURE
Air4G has been conceived for deployment in a 1-sector

Air4G is a highly integrated

compact, yet powerful, eNodeB

architectures).

configuration or in a 3-sector configuration, which is the

optimum configuration for LTE deployments. Air4G design also
incorporates an Ethernet switch which enables the traffic from 3
sectors to be aggregated for backhaul and network interfacing.
The switch has Copper and Fiber Giga Ethernet interfaces
towards the backhaul or backbone.

RELEASE 10 LTE-ADVANCED

EASE OF DEPLOYMENT WITH AirSON

Air4G is designed to integrate with standardized LTE Access SON
solutions. AirSON, Airspans SON solution, is layered and consists
of both Integrated eNodeB distributed SON technology, as well
as a standardized SON interface for network based centralized
SON.

The eNodeBs self-configure, self-connect, and self-optimize.

In addition, unlike conventional mobile network planning and
design, expansion of the coverage area can be optimized and
adapted depending on the local need.

COST-EFFECTIVE
Air4G supports a pay-as-you-grow deployment plan. An operator
can begin with a single unit and add eNodeBs as needed. With
flexible options, Air4G supports 3GPP LTE Release 9 with a
seamless upgrade path to LTE-Advanced and beyond.
Providing high power and consuming less power perfectly
positions Air4G to save operating expenses and cut costs while
maximizing revenue potentials. Its compact size allows for easy,
quick and flexible installation anywhere needed not just on
traditional communications towers.

Coupled with Airspans AirCore EPC-in-a-Box, a revolutionary 1RU

complete EPC solution, Air4G provides an ideal cost effective
solution for smaller-sized deployments, easily scalable to a full
blown network. Air4G has a rich interoperable device offering
with core networks and third-party end user devices including
multiple handsets, indoor and outdoor UEs, as well as USB
dongles from various manufacturers. Air4G has a proven high
level of integration with various core elements from Tier-1 EPC
vendors, as well as standalone billing platforms.
Air4G is managed via Airspans simple, intuitive, web-based EMS
called Netspan.

Air4Gs is ideal for Operator and Carrier networks in

suburban and rural environments as well as urban
deployment extensions. The product is also optimized
for vertical applications such as smart grid or
transportation, where there is often a need for a
powerful, cost-effective solution.

Air4Gs is available for the 1.4 GHz, 2.3 GHz (WCS band
in the USA) and 3.X GHz bands (supporting the entire
50 MHz in the 3.65 GHz band in USA). Other bands will
become available as business requirements evolve.

Air4Gs is an all-in-one, all-outdoor solution. There

is no need for an air-conditioned shelter or for
IF/optical/CAT5 cables connecting between an
indoor unit and outdoor unit (typical to base
stations with split architecture). This design and
its small power consumption dramatically reduce
OPEX and CAPEX.

Air4Gs is a mobile WiMAX (IEEE802.16e) Base Station and

has standard R1 and R6 interfaces. Air4Gs operates with a
large selection of Airspan end user devices and has proven
interoperability with units of every type of form factor
including outdoor CPEs, USB dongles and indoor CPEs
with/without VoIP and Wi-Fi. Air4Gs communicates
seamlessly with devices loaded with leading chips including
those of Sequans, GCT, Beceem and Mediatek.
Air4Gs has a proven high level of integration with various
ASN gateways (such as Starent/Cisco and WiChorus/Tellabs)
and with various AAA solutions (such as Bridgewater,
WiTECH, Juniper and Free Radius). Air4Gs also has a unique
powerful standalone mode where no ASN gateway is
required.

Comprehensive Solution - Matching

Data Traffic Requirements

The standalone mode can be used for fixed/nomadic

applications when there is no need for true mobility features
such as seamless handover and idle mode support.

Air4Gs has 2Tx2Rx with Tx power as high as 2*33 dBm. It

supports MIMO Matrix A (for better link budget) and MIMO
Matrix B (for doubling the capacity) the selection between
MIMO A and MIMO B is dynamic. It supports other advanced
mobile WiMAX features such as Fractional Frequency Reuse
(FFR).

In situations where applications demand higher

data rates on the uplink, (better link budget
ensures higher modulations and therefore higher
data rates), four base station receivers may be
required and in those cases, another Air4Gs model
with four receivers is available. For the longest
range and highest capacity needs, Air4G would be
a better fit.
Airspan offers a large selection of base stations to
match the data traffic demands of any network.
With a heterogeneous network, consisting of a
mixture of micro, pico and macro base stations, an
operator can maximize coverage while minimizing
expenses.
Air4Gs can be perfectly combined with Air4G
and AirSynergy to best optimize a network
and offer an operator comprehensive network
coverage, capacity and functionality. In addition,
all base stations can be managed from the same
core network, incorporating only one network
management solution with minimized core
network components and training.
Air4Gs WiMAX variants are now available. An LTE
version of the product is currently in production
and will be commercially available shortly.

Air4Gs supports IP CS and Ethernet CS, either separately or simultaneously, as well as VLAN pass-through, VLAN tagging/
untagging., VLAN-in-VLAN and Management VLAN.

Air4Gs works with Airspans unique VoiceMAXe server providing a carrier-class Voice over IP (VoIP) solution. VoiceMAXe provides
admission control of VoIP calls per sector, providing busy network tone to calls that cannot be accepted. It also supports
emergency calls (such as 911 calls in the USA), prioritizing and ensuring such calls go through while disconnecting standard calls if
there is not enough bandwidth.

THE EPC CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING SUBCOMPONENTS:

HSS (Home Subscriber Server): is a central
database that contains user and subscription-related
information. HSS stores user parameters, information
to authenticate the subscriber and the services a
user is allowed. It also contains the subscriber profile
such as QoS profile, access restriction and roaming
capabilities. The HSS may include an Authentication
Center (AuC) which generates authentication vectors
and security keys.
SGW (Serving Gateway): routes and forwards user
data packets, while also acting as the mobility anchor
for the user plane during inter-eNodeB handovers
and as the anchor for mobility between LTE and other
3GPP technologies. It retains information about the
bearers when the UE (User Equipment) is in idle mode.
It manages and stores UE contexts, e.g. parameters
of the IP bearer service, network internal routing
information. It also performs replication of the user
traffic in case of lawful interception. Network may
include several Serving Gateways, each handling
different data bearers at different times.
PGW (PDN Gateway): provides connectivity from
the UE to external packet data networks by being
the point of exit and entry of traffic for the UE. The
PGW performs policy enforcement, packet filtering,

charging support, lawful interception and packet

screening. Another key role is to act as the anchor for
mobility between 3GPP and non-3GPP technologies
such as WiMAX and 3GPP2 (CDMA 1X and EvDO).
MME (Mobility Management Entity): The MME is
the key control-node for the LTE access-network that
processes signalling between the UE and the core
network. It manages establishment, maintenance and
release of bearers and the connection, authentication
(by interacting with the HSS) and security between
the UE and the network. The MME Performs mobility
management, like tracking UE location and handover,
and manages subscription profile and service
connectivity. It checks the authorization of the UE and
enforces UE roaming restrictions.
PCRF (Policy and Charging Rules Function):
performs QoS, access and charging related control.
The PCRF is policy based and authorizes bearer
and session establishment and modification. Only
one PCRF is assigned to all the connections of one
subscriber, has access to subscriber profiles stored in a
database, and provides the QoS authorization (for QoS
class and bit rates) that determines the data flow and
ensures it is in accordance with the users subscription
profile.

outdoor Macro cell network.

OPTIONAL WIRELESS BACKHAUL

AirSynergy 1000 uniquely provides a solution for the
delivery of trusted high capacity wireless backhaul
to the enterprise using Airspans IEEE based iBridge
backhaul technology. iBridge is a self-configuring,
self-connecting point-to-multipoint backhaul solution,
which automatically extends the reach of the Macro
RAN backhaul network from existing Macro cell sites or
other Points of Interconnect (POI). AirSynergy iBridge
backhaul also provide high quality synchronization

LTE mobile networks are full of hotspots where large

numbers of users make demands for mobile data that
Macro-only networks are failing to provide. AirSynergy
1000 is designed to solve this Hotspot issue by bringing
cost effective LTE-Advanced Public Access into the
enterprise.

ECONOMIC DEPLOYMENT
The high performance and high power LTE-Advanced
radio interface of AirSynergy 1000 means that in most
cases a single unit can provide coverage for a large
building or even multiple buildings in a campus.

LTE-ADVANCED ACCESS
AirSynergy 1000 supports 3GPP LTE access technologies
in combination with Airspans intelligent IEEE wireless
backhaul technology, known as iBridge. Airspans
3GPP LTE implementation is compliant with the 3GPP
standards and has interoperable S1 and X2 interfaces,

RADIO PLANNING with SON

AirSynergy 1000 wall mounted Enterprise Femto cell(s) can be installed

quickly into large enterprises, either as a single node or as a cluster of
nodes. When deployed in clusters, the nodes are networked together
using Gigabit ethernet links. The AirSynergy 1000 can be deployed
using an integrated isotropic omni antenna, or with separate antennas
via 2 N-type connectors.

REDUCING THE COST OF DELIVERING Mbit/s

The deployment of an AirSynergy 1000 Enterprise Femto cell with
optional backhaul can massively reduce the cost of delivering Public
Access broadband mobile data to the Enterprise. The location of a high
performance Femto cell inside of the enterprise not only improves the
Quality of Experience, by enabling fast downloads and better coverage,
it simultaneously deloads the outdoor Macro cell network, improving
the overall network quality for all users. Perhaps even more significant
is that the cost for each Mbit/s delivered to users within the Enterprise
drops dramatically, which permits carriers to create innovative pricing
tariffs and generous data consumption allowances.

FLEXIBLE ARCHITECTURE
AirSynergy 1000 and 2000 support the holistic deployment of LTEAdvanced HetNets. By deploying both Indoor and Outdoor small
cell topologies, carriers can create optimal small cell networks that
solve both coverage and capacity shortfalls in the Macro cell network
Through the use of Airspans real-time SON Servers, LTE and iBridge
backhaul does continual self-optimization of both LTE backhaul links,
ensuring interference between is minimized and delivering end-to-end
QoS and QoE across the network with minimal spectrum consumption.

AirSynergy 1000 is designed

to integrate with standardized
LTE Access SON solutions.
AirSynergy SON is layered and
consists of both Integrated
eNodeB SON technology, based
on Qualcomms UltraSON and
a standardized SON interface
(which support TR.69) for
network based SON. When
deployed using iBridge backhaul
AirSynergy also integrates
Backhaul SON into the LTE
SON Framework. This allows
a network to be optimized for
both LTE access and Backhaul
simultaneously without the
need for extensive, formal
planning.
The products self-configure,
self-connect, and self-optimize.
In addition, unlike conventional
mobile network planning
and design, expansion of the
coverage area can be optimized
and adapted depending on the
local need.

THE POWER OF HETNETS

As operators struggle to cope with growing customer
demand for higher throughput, they are discovering that
layering small base stations into a macro cell coverage
area, enables a significant increase in network capacity
by filling in coverage gaps and addressing actual traffic
distribution where demand is highest. AirSynergy 2000

PLUG AND PLAY

RADIO PLANNING with SON

AirSynergy 2000 supports automated configuration from the

management system, simplifying the installation of each base station.
Airspans unique self-aligning Antenna technology cuts installation
time. This automation, coupled with the self-connecting iBridge
backhaul results in a true plug and play solution, allowing Pico cells to
be rapidly deployed.

REDUCED CAPEX / OPEX

AirSynergy 2000 is a compact all-outdoor 3GPP LTE Pico Base Station,
which can be installed without conventional indoor infrastructure
and associated power and air-conditioning systems. The integration
of wireless backhaul reduces the equipment installed per site, as
separate backhaul infrastructure is not required. This in turn reduces
spares holding and inventories. The iBridge backhaul supports self
healing, allowing the network to automatically recover in the event
of failure. This increases overall service availability and customer
satisfaction.

AirSynergy is designed to
integrate with standardized
LTE Access SON solutions.
AirSynergy SON is layered and

a network to be optimized for
both LTE access and Backhaul

FLEXIBLE ARCHITECTURE
The iBridge network can support different topologies as new
elements are added to the network, enabling a highly flexible and
versatile deployment. Each AirSynergy 2000 node can adopt an
access and backhaul functionality, automatically changing backhaul
role from termination to relay to ensure a dynamic self-adapting
architecture.
Through the use of Airspans real-time iBridge SON Server, iBridge
supports self-continuous optimization of backhaul links, ensuring
interference between iBridge nodes is minimized and delivering endto-end QoS across the network with minimal spectrum consumption.

The products self-configure,

self-connect, and self-optimize.
In addition, unlike conventional
mobile network planning
and design, expansion of the
coverage area can be optimized
and adapted depending on the
local need.

As operators struggle to cope with growing customer
demand for higher throughput, they are discovering that
layering small base stations into a macro cell coverage
area, enables a significant increase in network capacity
by filling in coverage gaps and addressing actual traffic
distribution where demand is highest. AirSynergy 3000 is
ideal for these networks, delivering high data rates where

INTEGRATED WIRELESS BACKHAUL

AirSynergy 3000 uniquely provides an integrated
wireless backhaul solution using Airspans iBridge
IEEE P802.16r and LTE Relay technology. iBridge is a
self-configuring, self-connecting point-to-multipoint
backhaul solution, which automatically extends
the reach of the network from existing Points of
Interconnect (POI). iBridge supports multi-hop relay
connections, providing backhaul for either LTE or IEEE
access interfaces.

ALL-IN-ONE SOLUTION
AirSynergy consists of a single self-contained unit,
removing the need for an equipment rack or any indoor
equipment. Units are powered from a compact power
supply unit based on AC or -48V DC power sources

PLUG AND PLAY

RADIO PLANNING with SON

AirSynergy 3000 supports automated configuration from the

management system, simplifying the installation of each base station.
Airspans unique self-aligning Antenna technology cuts installation
time. This automation, coupled with the self-connecting iBridge
backhaul results in a true plug and play solution, allowing Pico cells to
be rapidly deployed.

REDUCED CAPEX / OPEX

AirSynergy 3000 is a compact all-outdoor 3GPP LTE Pico Base Station,
which can be installed without conventional indoor infrastructure
and associated power and air-conditioning systems. The integration
of wireless backhaul reduces the equipment installed per site, as
separate backhaul infrastructure is not required. This in turn reduces
spares holding and inventories. The iBridge backhaul supports self
healing, allowing the network to automatically recover in the event
of failure. This increases overall service availability and customer
satisfaction.

AirSynergy is designed to
integrate with standardized
LTE Access SON solutions.
AirSynergy SON is layered and
consists of both Integrated
eNodeB SON technology, based
on Qualcomms UltraSON and
a standardized SON interface
(which supoport TR. 69) for
network based SON. When
deployed using iBridge backhaul
AirSynergy also integrates
Backhaul SON into the LTE
SON Framework. This allows
a network to be optimized for
both LTE access and Backhaul
simultaneously without the
need for extensive, formal
planning.

FLEXIBLE ARCHITECTURE
The iBridge network can support different topologies as new
elements are added to the network, enabling a highly flexible and
versatile deployment. Each AirSynergy 3000 node can adopt an
access and backhaul functionality, automatically changing backhaul
role from termination to relay to ensure a dynamic self-adapting
architecture.
Through the use of Airspans real-time iBridge SON Server, iBridge
supports self-continuous optimization of backhaul links, ensuring
interference between iBridge nodes is minimized and delivering endto-end QoS across the network with minimal spectrum consumption.

The products self-configure,

self-connect, and self-optimize.
In addition, unlike conventional
mobile network planning
and design, expansion of the
coverage area can be optimized
and adapted depending on the
local need.
