therightanswerwhenthebossgetsabitnasty.

Themostsuccessfulpeoplemastertheiremotions.Doinggreatworkand

buildingrelationshipshelpsyoustaycalmandincontrol.

Theresponsetothatpostdidnotsurpriseme;therearelotsoftoxicbossesout

there.Iknow,becauseIhavehadafewofthemmyself.AndastheCEOofAha!

(whichisvisualproductroadmapsoftware),IdoeverythingIcantohelp

employeesandthebusinessgrowwithnopain.

Hereareafewcommentsyousharedwithmethathighlighthowyouhandlebad

bosses:

Atrueprofessionalcanbringaboutafeelingofinsecurityintheirboss.If

heisnotemotionallyintelligent,hefeelsthreatened.Ifabossistoxic

thereisusuallyareason.

Sometimesyoujustcan'tnegotiate,tolerateorreasonwithatoxicboss

becauseshebelievessheisalwaysright.Findingyourselfbetweenarock

andahardplacewithatoxicbossisnotwhereyouwanttobe.

Iexpectedthesekindsofstories,butthiscommentcaughtmeoffguardandgot

methinking:

OneofthethingsIhavelearnedovertheyearsisthatnotalldifficult

bossesaretoxic.Themanagerswhochallengeusinapositivewayare

theonesthatwelearnthemostfrom.Toughsituationsbringoutthebest

inallofus.

MaybeIhaditallwrong.Maybethegreatestleadersactuallyoutsmartand

manipulatetheiremployeesattimes(forgood).Afterthinkingitthrough,I

realizedthatItrytodothismyselfsometimes.

Overtheyears,Ihavemanagedafewhundredpeopleeitherdirectlyor

indirectly.Ihavehadthe"crier,"the"sleeper,"the"unstable"­­employeeswho

self­sabotagedwithoutknowingit.Andineachcase,Ididmybesttoleadthe

accomplished?Havingregularoneononeconversationswithyourteamhelps

identifythebarriersthatholdthembackfromtheirgreatestperformance.

Setgoals

Ifemployeesdonotknowwheretheyaregoing,howwilltheygetthere?

Encourageemployeestosetweekly,monthly,quarterly,andyearlygoalsfor

themselves.Reviewthesegoalswiththemregularly,andtrackprogresstowards

success.Ifproblemsarise,youwillbothseethemcomingandbeabletowork

throughthemtogether.

Pushhard

Sometimes,peoplegetcomfortableunderperformingandneverresettheirown

expectations.Astheirmanager,itisyourjobtopushthemtoachievemore.

Assignthemstretchprojectsthatstrengthentheirskillsandhelpthemaddress

areasofweakness.

Thebestmanagersturnpotentialintoperformance.Theydothisby

lookingaheadandbeingaresourceandanadvocateforeachmemberof

theteam.

Toxicmanagersrunwild.Butsometimesweforgettoseethebosswhohasan

edgeandisusingittomakeusbetter.So,beslowtojudge.Itmightverywellbe

thatyourbossissmarterthanyouthink.Andthatwisdommightbeusedtohelp

makeyoushine.
