Minutes of the bi-weekly Hall A GnE meeting

July 30, 2003

Present: Brandon Craver, Nadia Fomin, Tim Holmstrom, Aiden Kelleher, Di k Madey, Kathy M Cormi k,
Igor Ra hek, Andrei Semenov, Alexandre Shabetai, Albert Shahinyan, Jaideep Singh, Bogdan Wojtsekhowski
The main topi s of dis ussion were:
Drift hamber proje t at UVA
Target ell rupture test at William and Mary
Proposal of new on guration of the N-arm
Results on the wire hamber rate behind BigBite
MC simulation of N-arm eÆ ien y
 3 He(e,e0 n) ounting rate vs position of N-arm
MC simulation of the time resolution
Requirement for TOF resolution for quasi-elasti events
Proposal of on guration of the veto plane
1. Drift Chambers at UVA (Brandon)
Preliminary test results for produ tion of athode planes are promising. Variations of the planarity
of the planes are expe ted to be less than 100 m, mostly due to imperfe tions in the printed
ir uit board (PCB).
The height of the glue should be ontrolled to a level negligible in omparison with the imperfe -
tions in the PCB.
Produ tion of the athode planes will begin when the 12 mil opper plated Mylar is re eived.

presentation at the meeting.
2. Target Rupture Tests (Aiden)

The target rupture tests at W&M are progressing (the obje t is to minimize the amount of mate-
rial along the beam while still prote ting the beamline va uum windows):
(a) The rst try at separating an exploding target ell from the beamline windows just lled the spa e
with air. The prote tion window and the beamline window were both destroyed.
(b) The se ond iteration separated the target ell from the beamline window with a helium lled tube.
This didn't prote t the beamline window be ause of a shotgun like e e t.
( ) The latest iteration separates the the target ell from the beamline window with an \expansion
hamber", where the entran e diameter lose to the target is 21 in h in diameter, then the tube
expands to 4 in hes in diameter. This seems to work very well. This designed will be explored
further.

3. New Con guration of the Neutron Arm (Igor and Bogdan)

A new on guration for the neutron dete tor was dis ussed, utilizing 7 layers instead of 5. This
on guration would have the 5 15 180 m bars forming the rst four layers, then the 10 10
160 m bars forming the last three layers. An additional se tion on the bottom would form six layers
utilizing the 10 20 180 m bars. This would in rease the height of the neutron dete tor, allowing
us to move the dete tor to larger distan es, whi h de reases the rate and relaxes the requirements on
the time resolution.

setup.
4. MC Simulation of N-ARM EÆ ien y (Andrei)

Irina made a simulation of the NDET time resolution using 5 ns de ay time for the PMT signals. The
mean time resolution obtained for neutrons (2.58 GeV/ of momentum) is about 0.45 ns (RMS). The
neutron dete tion eÆ ien y is about 35%; the ontamination from the protons is estimated on the level
of 7-8%.
