Warning Signs of a Possible Need for Help
The real challenge facing elders and their loved ones, is the ability to
differentiate normal aging, from the warning signs that something may be
wrong, requiring some form of intervention. It is important to note that we
all have a bad day - our hair is uncombed, we forget an appointment, or we
feel depressed; however a recurrent pattern may indicate a problem.

Don't Wait for a Crisis to Act

All too often, a loved one doesnt realize that help is needed until there is a
crisis, following an elder being involved in an accident, or experiencing a
sudden illness. You feel unprepared to respond to the situation, because you
often lack basic knowledge regarding the elder's medical history,
medications, insurance coverage, financial matters, or what the elder's
wishes would be in the given situation. To ensure the highest quality of life
for the longest time possible, it is crucial that elders and their loved ones,
begin a dialogue to discuss the topic of aging. This process needs to focus
on the elder's hopes and desires, short and long term goals, and their
abilities and needs; while at the same time establishing a spectrum of
resources that will address the elder's evolving needs.

As we get older theres less
we need or want for our
birthdays, but our loved ones
like to give us presents. As an

Your birthday will become an

Are you paying for your Medicare premium? It probably comes right out of your Social
Security check before it gets to you. If you currently pay for Medicare and have income and
resources that are less than the amount listed in the chart below, you may be eligible for a
Medicare Savings Program. There are three different Medicare Savings programs. Two pay
the Medicare Part B premium; the other pays Medicare Part A and B premiums, co-pays,
and deductible. The usual participant in this program receives over $100 added back
in their Social Security check each month. Thats money you can use to do other things
catch up on debts, pay bills, or just have fun.
You are likely eligible for this program if:
Your monthly household income is less than $1,313
for a house of 1 person or $1,770 for 2 people
AND
Your monthly household resources* are less than $7,160
for one person and less than $10,750 for 2 people.
*Countable resources include: Money in a checking or savings account; stocks;
bonds. Countable resources DO NOT include: Your home; 1 car; Burial plot; Up to
$1,500 for burial expenses if you have put that money aside; Furniture; Other
household and personal items
If you meet the guidelines included above, call 302-651-3427 or 302-651-3401 for an
appointment with a financial coach with the $tand By Me 50+ program for an appointment
to apply for these and other benefit programs.
