Holborn Shepherd’s Bush

Holborn is minutes from the world
famous Covent Garden Market, which
is a must-visit. A bit touristy, but still
well worth it.
The amazing Royal Opera House is a
short walk from our front door, as is the
English National Opera. Theatre land
is a bit further, but still very walkable.
Every year, legendary stars like Kevin
Spacey, Jessica and Jude Law appear
on the London stage. Many of the
world’s leading playwrights have their
premieres here.
Cinemas? There are loads. Take your
pick. As for restaurants? We’d need
a whole new section as there are so
many. From cheap and cheerful caffs
to Michelin-starred palaces where a
bottle of wine could cost more than
your rent for a year.
Shepherd's Bush is a short and rather
stylish stroll from arguably the
trendiest spot in London – Notting
Hill. Setting of the naff but shockingly
popular film of the same name,
Notting Hill is London’s Greenwich
Village.
And if you get bored of posing with
all the other beautiful people, you
can always get some retail therapy
at Westfield, Europe’s largest shopping
centre. Despite such an unpromising
description, it’s surprisingly cool. And
it's only a couple of hundred metres
from our West London centres.

Language assessment
Your level of English is assessed
before you start the course so that
we can place you in a class that will
be manageable, but at the same
time challenge you to improve your
English.
After you enrol, take the online
placement test –

Levels of English
Your enrolment test will tell us more
about your level of English. Our levels
are represented by different colours.
We’ll then allocate you to a certain
class, which is assigned a certain
colour level. The colour system is a
great way for you to know exactly
how you’re improving as you follow
the course and move from one level to
the next.
Pink I know a little English but I
understand more English than I speak.
Yellow I can understand many
things, but sometimes I don’t know
the right words or grammar.
Orange I don’t always use the right
grammar or vocabulary. Native
speakers talking quickly might
confuse me.
Green I am a confident speaker
of English, but I need to learn the
more difficult structures and more
vocabulary to express myself better.
Blue I am similar to the green student,
but I want to do an English exam such
as the Cambridge FCE sometime soon.
Purple I need English for my future.
I might want a career in Business, or
to get into university by passing the
IELTS examination.
Brown I need to expand my
vocabulary, and find other ways
of saying the things I know. I have
an interest in taking the Cambridge
IELTS examination.
Silver I am fluent in English in all

All Star Lanes
If your experience of bowling alleys is
a heady mix of smelly feet and rancid
chip fat, you’ve obviously never
been to Holborn’s All Star Lanes. It’s
a gentle, three-minute stroll from our
front door in Holborn. (Two, if you’re
particularly excited.) Kitsch but cool
50s style, six great lanes, amazing
cocktails and a restaurant good
enough to visit for the food alone. Visit
once and you’ll be hooked. (Challenge
our Principal Mike to a game. He takes
it pretty seriously, but he’s rubbish,

Denmark Street guitar shops
If you fancy a bit of star-spotting get
along to Denmark Street. A grimy-
looking side street near Centre Point,
it’s actually home to some of the best

and Johnny Marr all the way up
to modern stars like Alex Turner
and Graham Coxon. A mere nine-
minute sashay from our front door in
Holborn. Budding musos and axe men

The 100 Club
Although The 100 Club is famous the
world over, ironically it’s still unknown
to the average tourist. Its anonymous-
looking Oxford Street entrance is easily
missed if you’re not sure what you’re
looking for. Opened in 1942 (crikey—
none of us were alive then!), the list of
stars who’ve played there reads like a
Who’s Who of Music. Buddy Rich, The
White Stripes, Muddy Waters, Oasis,
Fats Domino, The Jam, Bo Diddley,
The Kinks, Sex Pistols, Muse and
Clapton. A miniscule 14-minute walk
from our front door in Holborn.
Just enough time to back-comb your
hair, put on your eyeliner and take a
healthy nip from a bottle of rock ‘n’ roll
mouthwash, (that’s Jack Daniels
to you, my friend).

Shepherd’s Bush
The Electric Cinema
London’s coolest cinema — no
question. Luxurious leather seats (with
their own footstools), great movies,
beautiful people and amazing food.
Forget the traditional bucket of stale
popcorn, this place has Hot Tubs! Fish
and chips, yummy vegetarian risotto,
chicken curry, you name it. And if
your thoughtful parents have just
sent you a nice fat cheque, you can
even treat yourself to a cold glass of
champagne. Heaven. Finally, if you’re
on a date and you fancy a cheeky

being there very often. Before you

••London is a very large city and
it can be expensive to live near
the centre. We’ve classified all our

as early as possible, as it can get

A long-term stay in London
If you’re planning on staying in
London for at least six months or more,
then it’s well worth looking at longer-
term accommodation as you can often
save a great deal of money.
••Never pay a deposit BEFORE you see

London Home Stay
From £15 per day. A Home Stay makes learning English in London even
easier. Why? Because your hosts will be native English speakers.
There’s no better way to practise what
you learn in your English lessons than
by chatting to people who live here.
And living with an English-speaking
London family will give you plenty of
opportunities to do just that.
Breakfast is usually included in a
Home Stay and sometimes other
meals if you want them too. Rooms

General Student Visa
••This visa allows students to study full
time and to work up to 10 hours a week

who want to study for six months

To get a CAS certificate students

Classes
••The maximum class size is 27 with an
average of 18.
••In every class there is a 15–minute
break.
••You will be placed in one of our four
centres — you will be told this a
week before the commencement of
the course.
••To guarantee your centre of choice
you can pay 20% extra on your
course fee.
••Each term normally lasts three
months. At the end of each term
your level and teacher may be
changed.
••Teachers sometimes fall ill. In
this case we will try to provide a
substitute. This is not always possible.
••The school operates continuous
enrolment which means students will
join the class any Monday during
each term.
••Students on part-time courses are
placed in the same classes as
full-time students and attend from
between one and four days instead
of five.
••The teacher will attempt to keep
part-time students aware of what
they have missed.
••Only English is to be spoken in the
class. Students will be asked to leave
the class if they repeatedly speak
any other language after being
warned by the teacher.
Holidays
••The school is closed for three weeks
over the Christmas Period.
••The school will add weeks onto
courses to compensate for time lost
due to this closure.
••Students on student visas must use
some of their authorised holiday
entitlement during this closure.

Before you book anything, please bear in mind
two important things:
• London is a very large city and it can be
expensive to live near the centre. We’ve
classified all our accommodation by
Accommodation Zones to help you see exactly
how long it will take to get to our Holborn
school
• If you’re coming in the summer, please book
your accommodation as early as possible, as it
can disappear very quickly.

it’s situated in. You can then work out how long
it will take you to get into Zone 1 where our
Holborn school is conveniently located.

London Home Stay from £120 per week
A Home Stay makes learning English in
London even easier.
How?

Because your hosts will be native English
speakers. And there’s no better way to practise
what you learn in your English lessons than by
chatting to people who live here. Breakfast is
usually included and sometimes other meals if
you want them too. Rooms are cleaned and bed
linen and towels changed weekly. You’ll have
your own house key and your host is there to
offer help, advice and take an interest in your
wellbeing.
As London is a large, multi-cultural city, the
families offering Home Stays come from many
ethnic backgrounds, but rest assured: English
is always the main language spoken in the
house. No one else in the house will speak your
mother tongue, unless you specially request it.
But be warned – your English lessons may go
to waste if you spend all your time out of school
speaking your own language!
Our Home Stays are managed by Host
International, a well-respected accommodation
agency that has been checked by the British
Council. We use them because we think they’re
great and have the same high standards that
we do. Home Stays are located throughout

home-from-home located in the vibrant, trendy
area of Kentish Town (Zone 2). It’s only a 2
minute walk to the tube station and the great
news is that we now have exclusive use of it.

The house has 15 rooms so every taste and

If you’re planning on staying in London
for at least six months or more, then
it’s well worth looking at longer term
accommodation as you can often save a
great deal of money.

The websites below are all good sources of flat-

shares. But before you start looking, make sure
you follow our golden rules:

• Never pay an accommodation agency to find • Check how much rent you will need to pay in
you somewhere to live advance

– the websites listed below all offer a free – most places will ask you to pay one month in
service advance

• Check how large a deposit you will need to pay
– it’s usually equivalent to one month’s rent and
you’ll get it back at the end of your stay
• Never pay a deposit BEFORE you see a room.
You may find that the room doesn’t actually
exist
– particularly if it is offered at a very low rent.
Never send money using Western Union – this
is always a warning sign
• Check whether or not the bills are included in
the rent
– these could easily add on an extra £50 a
month
• Find out all the rules of the house
– such as smoking, parties and entertaining
friends
