Montage
Description:

An inspirational, non-religious montage to develop skills in masking.

Date:

February 14, 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to create and manipulate masks.

Learn to blend images together using masks and opacity.

Process:

I first decided to make my montage about dancing, and found an

appropriate image of sheet music and a dancing woman. I then used a
filter to blend the sheet music with the blue background, and applied
a mask to the girl so that I could blend it with the background. I then
made sure to place my typography in the bottom left corner so that it
would be legible.

Photodesign
Description:

A personally taken photograph used in a project to show proficiency

with Photoshop.

Date:

February 7, 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn photography skills

Learn how to use Photoshop
Learn to use proper color schemes in a project
Adjust saturation and brightness of an image

Process:

I took this picture with my digital camera and edited the image in
Photoshop. I then used the rectangle and ellipse tools to create the
background and the color swatches. Finally, I added typography,
and used one font for the quote attribution and the color scheme, and
another font for the quote itself.

Letterhead
Description:

Matching business card and letterhead to promote a self-designed logo.

Date:

February 28, 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a logo for a business or company

Create a matching business card and letterhead corresponding to that logo.

Process:

I first created my logo in Illustrator, using the star and ellipse tools. Then
I used the pathfinder tool to seal the shapes together, and moved the logo
onto an 8.5 x 11 document in InDesign. I added typography, and finally
I used the star tool to put in the three triangles bordering the page. I used
the eyedropper tool to color the rectangles, then changed the opacity of
each so that they would be more transparent.

Business Card
Description:

Matching business card and letterhead to promote a self-designed logo.

Date:

February 28, 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a logo for a business or company

Create a matching business card and letterhead corresponding to that logo.

Process:

I first created the logo for my company in Illustrator, then created two 3 x
2 canvases for the front and back of the business card. I used the star tool
and the add anchor point tool to create the triangles bordering the back of
the card, then filled in the typography on both sides.

Web Page
Description:

A web page designed to fit a personally created logo.

Date:

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Wordpad ++
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Export a high-quality PNG of a previously designed logo.

Describe process of creating the logo.
Gain understanding of coding CSS and HTML

Process:

I used a HTML and CSS template provided by the course to create

the layout that I wanted on the web page. I used the colors from
my logo to create an analogous color scheme using the eyedropper
tool, and used Adobe Photoshop to create a background image.
Finally, I changed the opacity of the background to 90% and center
aligned the logo on the page.

Brochure
Description:

A two-sided trifold brochure advertising internships.

Date:

March 28. 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Learn how to properly align a brochure

Learn how to wrap text around an image
Learn how to cut images in Photoshop
Learn how to use paragraph styles

Process:

I first created my logo in Illustrator, using the ellipse tool. I created outlines
on the typography so that I could curve the H. In InDesign, I first used rulers
to set up where the flaps in my trifold brochure would be. I then decided on
a split complementary color scheme and made the background of both sides
a teal color. I created the backgrounds for the titles in Photoshop, and made
them the same shape to create repetition. I then created the layout I wanted,
and finally put in my images and wrapped the text around them.

Logos
Description:

Three possible logos for a company of my choice.

Date:

February 21, 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Learn how to navigate Adobe Illustrator

Create three completely differing logos for one company

Process:

I first sketched out possible designs for my logos on paper, and then
I selected my three favorites to create in Illustrator. Next, I assigned
a color scheme to each logo. I mainly used the rectangle, ellipse, and
polygon tools to create my logos. I also created outlines around the
word photography in the second logo, so that I could lengthen the
descenders.

Event Ad
Description:

A full-color advertisement to promote a fundraiser.

Date:

January 31, 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

Find and scan a quality image.

Create a layout for a flyer using only Microsoft Word

Process:

First I went to the library in order to find a quality image to scan. I then
used the McKay Librarys scanner to scan the image to my email. I then
sketched possible layouts for my advertisement, and used the rectangle
tool in Word to create diagonal balance for my steak image. I continued
to use diagonal balance with my typography, with text in the top right,
middle, and bottom left.

Flyer
Description:

Black and white flyer promoting a graduate leadership conference.

Date:

January 24, 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 3
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Choose appropriate typography for the message.

Create a coherent design that communicates the message.
Develop basic InDesign skills

Process:

I first created multiple sketches for possible layouts. I then gathered

feedback from roommates and friends to decide which layout would
be the best. I downlaoded the image and logo that I felt would work
best with my design, and used a thick black stroke to create the border
around the bottom and sides of the page. I gave graduate a larger
weight and size so that it would be the focal point, and made all of the
other text smaller than that, to create a hierarchy.
