Multiwell Processing

5-1

Overview
Multiwell processing may be performed within Geologs Well or Project application.

Paradigm Rock & Fluid Canvas 2009 | Epos 4.0

Multiwell Processing

5-2

Setup
The steps required to perform multiwell processing are:
1. Specify the wells to processsee Opening Multiple Wells on page 1-8 (Well) or Limit / Specify
for Processing on page 1-6 (Project).
2. Set the datum to limit the processingsee Datum on page 2-5.
3. Launch the required multiwell processingsee Using the Module Launcher on page 2-31 for
information on running multiwell modules (utilities, statistics, etc.), and Working in Xplot on
page 3-1 for information on inserting Functions and Points, calculating regressions and logs,
etc.

Identifying Wells
In a standard multiwell crossplot, values from all wells are displayed and the source well of any specific
value cannot be identified. The expressions WELL_NO and SYMBOL are used to identify different wells
in a multiwell crossplot. See Expression and "Data Legends" on page 5-11. The expression INTERVAL_NO
is used to identify intervals specified for processing.

WELL_NO as a Color Expression

WELL_NO is selected in the Color Expression field. Values for each well are then identified by a color
determined by the specified Color Bar. If no Color Bar is selected, colors are automatically assigned to each
well from the Appearance Palette on page 4-3.
To create a color bar of user defined colors for each well, ensure that the values for Size (select File > Size
in the Colormap on page 5-3 dialog box) are specified as follows:

Minimum = 1

Maximum = Total number of wells + 1

Interval = Total number of wells

NOTE If no points from a well are displayed on the crossplot, the well name is not displayed in the
Well Legend.
See Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 for examples.

HEZE data is outside the crossplot limits, therefore the well name is not displayed in the Well Legend.

WELL_NO as a Symbol Expression

Not available in 3D mode. Values are identified by a number for each open well. The number is according
to the order of wells in the well list.
If the Symbol Style is "Text", the well numbers are displayed. If it is "Marker", a marker is automatically
selected for each well from the Appearance Palette on page 4-3.

NOTE If data points from more than one well occupy the same position, the point is displayed as
the default symbol specified in the Appearance field. See Fig. 3.
As shown in Fig. 4, a Color Expression can be used as well as well numbers for identification.

WELL_NO as Symbol and Color Expression

WELL_NO can be used for both the Color and Symbol Expressions (see "WELL_NO as a Color Expression"
on page 5-4 and "WELL_NO as a Symbol Expression" on page 5-6). This identifies each well with both a
unique symbol and color.

NOTE If data points from more than one well occupy the same position, the point is displayed as
the symbol specified in the Appearance field.
See Fig. 5 for an example.

Using WELL_NO in the Color and Symbol Expressions creates a unique color and symbol for each well.
Fig. 5: Example of WELL_NO for both the Color and Symbol Expressions

Well Constants as Symbol Expressions

Well Constants may be used as Symbol Expressions. For example, the expression "SYMBOL" can be used
to identify the well status with the Well Header constant "Symbol" specified for each well. If the well
constant has not been defined in the well header, the symbol selected in the Color and Symbol Appearance
field is used. See Fig. 6 for an example.

Data Legends
The color boxes/symbols displayed by the well names in the Well Legend indicate that all the points
displayed for that well are in that color/symbol. For example, if using INTERVAL_NO as an expression, and
one of the well names has a color box displayed beside it, this indicates that all points displayed for that
well are from a single interval.

Display Issues
The following is a list of display issues when working in multiwell crossplots.

If the well specified for processing does not have the required data, the well name is not
displayed in the legend.

When large numbers of wells are open, the header may display the number of wells open instead
of displaying the well names. The Xplot header is limited to the width of the display box and
therefore, the length of well names and the font size will determine the number of names
displayed. Use the Titles on page 2-41 tab of the Properties dialog box to reduce the font size
to display more names.

If the settings for the Border on page 4-15 of the display do not provide sufficient room for
displaying all the Data Legend details (i.e., the names are missing or unreadable), make the
display area larger to accommodate the extra text. See Fig. 7 for an example.
Alternatively, the Legends can be turned off by setting the Data Legends Text attribute to blank
on the Ancillaries on page 2-45 tab.

When using WELL_NO as a Symbol Expression, if data points from more than one well occupy
the same position, the point is displayed as the symbol specified in the Appearance field.

If only a single well, or no wells are open when a new crossplot is opened, a Color Expression is
NOT specified. If multiple wells are open when a new crossplot is opened, WELL_NO is the
default Color Expression.
