PROGRAMS AND TOOLS

Adobe Photoshop

OBJECTIVES
Use the FOCUS design process with strong
focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and
dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop
skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of
the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes,
events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title
with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images

PROCESS
The process of this project started with
sketching out my ideas. I had a few ideas
but this one ended up being my favorite.
After I created a simple sketch, I went to
the internet and chose two photos that fit
my design. I masked the Photo of the girl
and then used a blending mode called
lighten. I next started to put my text into
the design, but realized the space was to
open to I added the cloud photo. To get
the text to stand out from the clouds, I
used the Dodge and Burn tool to lighten
and darken the layer behind the text.

PROGRAMS AND TOOLS

Adobe Photoshop

OBJECTIVES
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match
those colors, then incorporate the colors into
the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image,
then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance,
sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an
8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic
elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8
(0.125) from all four sides.

PROCESS
The process in making this project
started with making a plan. I wanted
a bright color scheme for my project,
so I purchased lemons, limes, and a
grapefruit. I took a bunch of photos of
the fruit on a slate background next to
a large window in my apartment. After
I picked the photo I wanted, I put the
photo into photoshop and changed the
levels while doing this, brightened the
background. I also used the selective
color tool to brighten the colors in the
fruit. After this, I added the text, color
description, and design elements in
the right corner.

Adobe Photoshop

OBJECTIVES
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a
brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least
four quality images, not including the logo. One
should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped
in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of
the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least
three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided)
color.

PROCESS
The first step of this brochure was creating
a sketch of my brochure. I decided to go
with a gate fold brochure on a 8.511
page in InDesign. I then set the rulers
to 2.72 on the sides and then began the
process! I started on the inside of my
design. I first wanted the brochure to
open up and boom! The magical Castle!
So I chose a photo of the castle at night
and opened it in photoshop. I added two
photos of fireworks in the background to
add even more magic! After this, I added
my body copy and used a text wrap around
the castle. I next added the bottom section
of the inside. I added a paragraph and
photo of the design for Sleeping Beautys
Castle. On the other side of this section,
I added a series of circles to create
mickey ears. I added the sparkle detail
later. Then the top section, I placed a
quote from Walt Disney, and a 60. I used
three different fonts, sizes, and colors.
The other side came next. I found two
photos from Disneyland. One modern, and
one from when Walt Disney was alive. I
placed my logo in the middle of those two
photos. I then added a sparkle trail and
title text on the bottom and top front side.
On the back I used the same 60, mickey
ears, two blue lines, and the Sixty on the
back.

PROGRAMS AND TOOLS

Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

OBJECTIVES
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal
image. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a
business card and letterhead. Photos are okay on
business card and letterhead as additional design
elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed
optional, but trim only .125. Business card should
be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a
vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and
drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Include contact information: name, address,
phone, website, and email on each piece. Use
periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no
parentheses/ hyphens.

PROCESS
Next came the business card, I
wanted the front of the card to look
like a camera. So I added those same
repeating boxes, and then placed
the logo in the center to look like the
lense. I created this logo using Adobe
Illustrator to create a Vector Graphic
that can be in different mediums.
I used the pen tool to create to
arrow shape on the back side, and
also used the elipse tool to create
the circles. I added my personal
information and then added a QR
code that is linked to my blog adress.

PROCESS
This project started off as a challenge
for me, but over the work period I
learned to like it. I first started by
making a new logo in Illustrator. I used
a series of elipses to create a camera
look. Then I added a shape in the center
circle to make it look like a camera
lense. I next added my Text. I used Red
and Black because they stand out well
together. After I finished my logo, I
started on my letterhead. I started off
with some retro lines, but I decided to
go with the repetition of the repeating
squares. This also added to my vintage
retro look. I added a drop shadow to
my red boxes at the top then I added
my logo. The bottom was created with
a red rectangle with drop shadow, the
same repeating squares, and a text box.

PROJECT
Webpage
DESCRIPTION

PROCESS

Create a web page designed to showcase a

personally created logo.

This was my first time creating

anything in html or css. I
created this web page using
only TextWrangler on the Spori
Lab Macs. I created my logo in
Illustrator. I played around with
different geometric shapes, and
ended up liking the triangle/
prism shape the best. So, I made
one large prism shape with the
indigo stroke fill by using the pen
tool. I also filled in the top left
side of the shape with the same
indigo color to make it seem
more 3-D. After this, I added
the smaller prism shapes to the
right side of the logo. I adjusted
the size and color of each and
placed them in the shape. Once
I finished the geometric shapes,
I added the text to the logo. The
companys name is, Edge Home
Design. I used a decorative font
to add some personalization
to the logo. I liked how the font
looks hand drawn, almost like a
designer created it for the client.
I made Design larger than the
top two words to emphasize the
companys main goal; to design.

PROJECT
Logos

DESCRIPTION
Create three different logos for the same
company

PROGRAMS AND TOOLS

Adobe Illustrator
OBJECTIVES
Create three completely different, original
logos to fit a company or personal image that
will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate
existing logos or use previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and
draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated
flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or livetracing. You may use an image or drawing as
a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but
delete the image before submitting.)
Gather opinions from at least ten people
about which logo appeals most to them.

PROCESS
For this project, I wanted to make
three new logos for Chatterton Insurance and I used Adobe Illustrator. The
first logo started out with a rectangle
drawn with the rectangle tool. Then
I used the pencil tool to create the
outline or shape of a mountain range.
I moved the box to the bottom of the
mountains and then added the text.
I used the same font for both lines.
Lastly I added the line to separate the
two.
For the next logo, I used the Elipse
Tool to create a large Forest green
circle. I added a second elipse with a
smaller stroke size and white color.
Next, I used the Pencil tool to create
the outline of pine tree, and gave it a
lighter green color. Lastly, I added the
text. I used two different fonts to have
contrast between the two.
The Last, started with a rectangle with
rounded edges made by the rectangle
tool. I used the same mountains from
my first logo, but changed the color
of the mountain and the snow detail.
I added a bold text and a thin text to
have contrast between the two. And
lastly I added a gold Elipse and a gold
line in between the text.

PROJECT
Flier
DESCRIPTION

PROCESS

Create a black & White promotional flier to

promote a graduate leadership conference.

This is my Graduate Leadership

Conference flier created for
COMM130. When creating this flier
I used InDesign for the first time.
I learned how to format text and
photo boxes, use fill color, use stroke
color, and create lines. At first it was
difficult but after a while, I got the
hang of it. I wanted to create an eye
catching flier with a clear message
to catch the eye of graduates, who
are the audience. The top things i
learned were, to be patient when
using a new program, use crisp
black and white to create contrast,
and printing the project multiple
times is very helpful.

PROJECT
Event Ad
DESCRIPTION

PROCESS

Create a full bleed Event Ad made from Word

and a scanner.

For this assignment, the biggest

challenge was only using Word,
but I learned to work through the
struggle. The actual image was
chosen, printed at a shop, then
scanned using and Epson Scanner.
I then started my four sketches and
began planning my design. I ended
up using one of the textures for
the background. It had a burlap/
mat feel. I then created text boxes
with a light opacity and entered the
information with a dark maroon
color to match the drapes on the
elephant. I lastly added a diamond
shape to go behind the top banner.
