web page
Description:

A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Date:
3/14/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
TextWrangler
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and
how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic
understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I created this web page using a HTML file the TextWrangler

program. The logo was created using the Adobe Illustrator. The
style for the design comes from an existing CSS file. I made
several adjustments to the existing file such as changing the
typography and the border design. This provided me with basic
coding information and to link HTML and CSS files in order to
create a web page.

montage
Description:

An inspirational montage using two blended photos.

Date:
2/14/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

After selecting the images used for the project, I used

Photoshop to edit them. The images were blended together
using layer masks. The typography was decided based on the
color scheme and the purpose of the design. One of the bigger
challenges of this project was to blend the images together in
such a way that makes it look realistic. A strict attention to
detail was especially important in this project because it was
important not to make it seem obvious that the two different
images were blended together.

business card
Description:

A business card advertising a business consulting company.

Date:
2/28/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

IThe logo for the business card was created using the Illustrator
program. The layout and design of the business card was
created using the InDesign software. The layout of the elements
in the design was especially critical in this assignment due to
the small size of the business card. It was equally important to
use typography that was not only appealing, but could also be
readable in small print due to the various contact information
that was required to fit on the card. Completing this project
gave me the basic skills needed if a company approached me to
design a logo for them.

Letterhead
Description:

A letterhead for a business consulting company to use in order

to send correspondence to other parties, whether it be clients
or other companies.

Date:
2/28/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:

The process of creating the letterhead is very similar to the

process of creating the business card. The logo was created
using Illustrator and the design of the letterhead was created
using InDesign. For this particular project, it was important
to keep the layout simple because there needed to be plenty of
room because the purpose of the letterhead is a template and
therefore needs room in order content for letters to be written
on it. An important realization made during this project was
how the smallest of details can make a project look unique.

Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure advertising a patent

consulting company.

Date:
3/28/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator
Photoshop

Objectives:

Create a two-sided, folded document.

Incoropate images in the brochure.
Clip image using Photoshop.
Wrap text and an image.

Process:

The logo on the front cover of the brochure was created on

the Adobe Illustrator program. The images were found online
and clipped using Photoshop. The layout of the brochure was
created using Adobe InDesign. I uploaded the images from
the Internet. I chose these specific ones in order to be the same
as the color scheme of the brochure. It was also interesting
to create different paragraph styles and to wrap text around
an image to make it look creative. It was very difficult to
understand the layout process of the brochure, but it was very
rewarding to learn how to create a brochure.

flier
Description:

Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate

leadership conference.

Date:
1/24/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links intact.

Process:

I first created some sketches of my layout. Then I used my

sketch as a guide to create this layout in Adobe InDesign.
I uploaded the logo and the image to InDesign I used gray
shading to contrast with the black and white layout of the flier.
Alignment was especially important in this design due to all
the elements and content information in this flier. This project
allowed me to see the importance of keeping designs simple in
order to maintain a clean and professional look.

event ad
Description:

An advertisement for a super sale at a video game store.

Date:
1/31/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Image Scanner

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design
Use text boxes for layout in Word.
Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:

The image I used came from one my textbooks. I scanned the

image and cropped it. I then created the format of the event ad
using Microsoft Word. I used two different fonts and differing
colors in order to create contrast in the project. I also aligned
the image and text in order for the elements to flow together.
I was very fascinated to see how Microsoft Word can be used
for design. I have only used this program previously to write
papers or other homework assignments.

Imaging
Description:

A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted

using Photoshop.

Date:
2/7/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Digital Camera
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image.
Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels.
Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image.
Desaturate the selected portion of the image.
Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image.

Process:

I took the photo using a simple digital camera. I then used the
Adobe Photoshop program to make minor edits to the photo. I
then used the rectangle tool to create rectangles that would match
the color scheme. I used two different fonts to create contrast in
the project. It was amazing to see how much a photograph can be
edited and formatted in order for it to change.

Logos
Description:

Three different images used in order to advertise a music store.

Date:
2/21/15

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 07
Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.

Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:

I started out by sketching out quite a few ideas for the logos I
wanted to create. I then used the Adobe Illustrator progam to
cdesign them. I learned the importance of how a companys
logo represents their message they are trying to convey. It was
very hard for me to find the typography and color schemes, but
it was worthwhile being able to learn how to design a logo. This
skill will be very helpful in the future if I am ever in a situation
where I am asked by a company to create a logo for them.
