COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a survey of human pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and
fungi, emphasizing pathogen characteristics, pathogen identification,
and the role of the clinical microbiology laboratory in the diagnosis of
infectious disease.

Class Format
The class will be taught in lecture format using powerpoint slides.
Slides will be made available on Canvas reading assignments are
expected to be read. Any material discussed in lecture whether in
slides or reading can be asked on exams.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Understand the clinical laboratory procedures used to process
specimens and identify pathogens in clinical microbiology
Understand the diseases caused by discussed pathogens
GRADING PLAN
There will be 3 tests and a comprehensive final exam. The 3
regular exams will be worth 100 points. The final
comprehensive exam will be worth 100 points and is required.
Each exam may be a mix of short answer, essay and multiple
choice. Other assignments maybe made through out the
semester, which may change total points in the class.
The following grading scale will be used:
A= 90-100%
B=89-80%

C=79-70
D=69-60
F= 59 and below
ALTERNATIVE EXAM DATES and MAKE-UPs:
It is the policy of the University of Central Florida to reasonably accommodate the religious
observances, practices, and beliefs of individuals in regard to admissions, class attendance, and the
scheduling of examinations and work assignments. If an exam is scheduled on a religious holiday, the
university catalog states that students may request an alternate day for the exam and observe the holiday
without penalty. An alternative exam date and makeup exam will be offered to any student needing to
reschedule or make up any one of the 4 lecture exams due to conflicts with other important scheduled
events related to education (school/job interview, field trip, IU team travels) or personal emergencies.
To reschedule one of the lecture exams your reason must be documented and presented for
consideration to Dr. Bryant, preferably at the beginning of the semester for accommodation of religious
observances, etc., but at least one week before the scheduled lecture exam for consideration. If you
should have an unexpected emergency and need to make up an exam notify Dr. Bryant as soon as possible
by telephone, voicemail or email of your situation to make arrangements for the optional date and make up
exam. ACCEPTABLE AND VERIFIABLE DOCUMENTATION will be required.
