This article explains how to create Oracle VM VirtualBox and install Oracle Linux 6. Most of

Oracle VM Virtual Box provide you virtual Linux environment on your Windows PC which
you can use for installing oracle software. Lets see how can we do this.

Oracle VM VirtualBox
VirtualBox is powerful Cross-platform Virtualization Software for x86-based systems.Crossplatform means that it installs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris x86 computers.
And Virtualization Software means that you can create and run multiple Virtual Machines,
running different operating systems, on the same computer at the same time. For example,

Creating a Virtual Machine (VM) using VirtualBox

Step1: Download Oracle VM VirtualBox Software for your PC (Freely available for
Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris x-86 platforms). Download Now
VirtualBox-4.3.0-89960-Win.exe
VirtualBox-4.3.0-89960-OSX.dmg
Step2: Install VirtualBox, Open it using link on desktop

Step5: Enter the amount of memory you need for VM. If you only want to practice Linux, 1
GB is good enough. If you want to install oracle database, you should give at least 2 GB. if
you want to install Oracle e-Business Suite, you should give at least 4 GB. Remember to
keep enough memory for your desktop PC (Host PC). Click the Next button.

Step7: Accept the default VDI file type and click the Next button. You can select other
options if you understand the usage.

Step9: Select the required disk on VM and click the Finish button. Remember ~ 4-5 GB
will be used by OS and rest you can decide based on database & application software
requirement. Generally 20 GB good for Oracle demo database.

Step11: In the System section, move the Hard Disk at the top and un-check the Floppy

Step12: In Storage section, click on CD/DVD entry and in Attributes, click on CD/CD
icon. Select the Oracle Linux 6 64-bit ISO image from hard disk. You can also follow other
options to boot your CD/DVDs.
Step13: You can also setup Shared Folders for your desktop hard drive to VM host for
oracle software transfer. You have other options to transfer files between Host PC to VM

Host. After this click OK to save everything.
Step14: Verify your VM setting on console. Click Start to boot Linux for installation.

Oracle Linux 6 Installation on VirtualBox

Once you create a Virtual Machine using Oracle VirtualBox as mentioned above, you are
now ready to install Oracle Linux 6 ES 64-bit.
Step1: Download Oracle Linux Enterprise Edition 6.3 (64-bit) from eDelivery.oracle.com.

Step2: Create a Bootable ISO image of Oracle Linux 6.3 (64-bit) and copied on your

Desktop PC.
e.g.: C:\shared\OracleLinux-R6-U3-Server-x86_64-dvd.iso
Step3: Continue from Step14, VM will start the Linux OS installation. Click OK on this
pop-up information and Enter on Install or upgrade and existing system. Remember to use
Right Ctrl to navigate your cursor between VM and Desktop.
Step4: If your CD/DVD are verified before, you can select Skip.

Step8: Select the Basic Storage Devices unless you have other storage options, then
click Next.
Step9: Select Yes, Discard any data on this warning.

Step10: Enter hostname with domain (e.g.: oralinux6.localdomain). Also click on Configure
Network and edit the eth0 with IPv4 details. Keep the Connect automatically checkbox.
If you are not using DHCP, you can select Manual and provide all details required. Apply
to save and click Next.

Step11: Enter the root OS Super User account password. Keep it save to remember. Click
Next

Step13: Select Use All Space, then click Next. Also select Review & modify partitioning
layout check-box.

per your requirements. Click Next

Step16: We are doing Basic Server installation. Please select the Customize Now radio
button and click Next.

Step22: On Software Updates screen, select later time to update your software. You can
use Yum utility for software updates later. Click Forward

Step25: keep the default (unchecked) for Kdump and click Finish.
Step26: On OS login screen, use your account or other.. like root account to login.

Step27: Now you have Oracle Linux 6 desktop. You can enable eth0 network if not
enabled.
Step28: Disable the Firewall from System Administrator Firewall menu. Click on
Disable button and Apply.

Step29: You can right click on screen, select Open in Terminal to open a command
SHELL.

Step30: Disable SELinux from the /etc/selinux/config file (SELINUX=disabled) and restart
the Server.
Now you have Oracle Linux 6 server for practice and further you can install ORACLE
