Despite initial diculties in nding a producer willing performing with the band in the video. [21]
to take charge of the debut album of a newly signed
band, Don Gilmore ultimately agreed to head up the
project,* [6] with Andy Wallace hired as the mixer.
Recording sessions, which mostly involved re-recording
the songs o the demo tape, began at NRG Recordings
in North Hollywood, California in early 2000 and lasted
four weeks.* [6] Shinoda's rapping sections in most of the
songs were signicantly altered from the original, while
most choruses remained largely unchanged.* [11] Due to
the absence of Dave Farrell and Kyle Christener, who
took part in the 1999 extended play, the band hired Scott
Koziol and Ian Hornbeck as stand-in bassists; Delson also
played bass throughout most of the album. The Dust
Brothers provided additional beats for the track With
You.
Bennington and Shinoda wrote the lyrics of Hybrid Theory based in part on early demos with Mark Wakeeld.* [5] Shinoda characterized the lyrics as interpretations of universal feelings, emotions, and experiences,
and as everyday emotions you talk about and think
about.* [12]* [13] Bennington later described the songwriting experience to Rolling Stone magazine in early

1.3 Composition
The music of Hybrid Theory draws from diverse inspirations. Bennington's singing style is inuenced by acts such
as Depeche Mode and Stone Temple Pilots,* [5] while
the ris and playing techniques of guitarist Brad Delson
are modeled after Deftones, Guns N' Roses,* [6] U2, and
The Smiths.* [5] Mike Shinoda's rapping, present in seven
tracks, is very close to The Roots' style. The lyrical content of the songs primarily touches upon the problems that
Bennington encountered during his childhood, including child abuse, constant and excessive drug and alcohol
abuse,* [5] the divorce of his parents, isolation,* [14] disappointments, and the aftermath feelings of failed relationships.* [15] Stylistically, the album has been described as nu metal,* [16] rap metal* [17] and alternative
metal.* [18]
The album eventually produced four singles. "One Step
Closer", the album's second track and rst single, was
gradually recorded in increments after Linkin Park struggled with Runaway, and features a guitar ri and
electronic percussion in the introduction transitioning
into a bridge with distortion-heavy guitars and aggressive
drums.* [19] It is also infamous for the Shut up when
I'm talkin' to you!" refrain screamed by Bennington one
minute and 48 seconds into the song.* [19]* [20] The music video for One Step Closerwas shot in a Los Angeles subway* [21] and became an instant hit, eventually
1.4 Artwork
With Hybrid Theory being Linkin Park's rst album,
Mike Shinoda, who had worked as a graphic designer before becoming a professional musician, has stated that the
band had looked through books for inspiration on how to
present themselves for the rst time. The result was a
winged-soldier which Shinoda illustrated himself. According to Chester Bennington, the idea of the soldier
with dragony wings was to describe the blending of hard
and soft musical elements by the use of the jaded looks of
the soldier and frail touches of the wings.* [27] The cover
also features scrambled lyrics of the album's songs within
the background, though the lyrics of "One Step Closer"
are the most prominent. A dierent version of the soldier
can be seen on some of the album's singles. The cover of
Reanimation, a remix album of Hybrid Theory, features a

United Kingdom, Sweden, New Zealand, Austria, Finland, and Switzerland.* [37] At the 44th Grammy Awards
in 2002, Linkin Park won Best Hard Rock Performance
for their song Crawling. Additional nominations for
Best New Artist and Best Rock Album lost out to Alicia
Keys and All That You Can't Leave Behind by U2.* [38]
Following the success of Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park received invitations to perform at various rock concerts and
tours, including Ozzfest, the Family Values Tour, KROQFM's Almost Acoustic Christmas, and the band's selfcreated tour, Projekt Revolution, which was headlined by
Linkin Park and featured other bands such as Cypress
Hill and Adema.* [5]* [7] During this time, Linkin Park
reunited with their original bassist, DavePhoenixFarrell.* [5] The band kept an online journal on their ocial
website throughout their 2001 and 2002 touring regime,
in which each band member made a respective notation.
Although the notes are no longer on their website, they are
available on fansites.* [39] Linkin Park played 324 shows
in 2001.* [5]

Chapter 4
A Thousand Suns
A Thousand Suns is the fourth studio album by American
rock band Linkin Park. It was released on September 8,
2010, under Warner Bros. Records. The album was written by the band, while production was handled by Linkin
Park vocalist Mike Shinoda and Rick Rubin who previously worked together to produce the band's third studio
album Minutes to Midnight (2007). Recording sessions
for the album took place at NRG Recording Studios in
North Hollywood, California from 2008 until early 2010.

I feel like we've been writing a lot. I'd say we've got
about half the music done, though I shouldn't say halfway
because who knows how long the next batch of songs will
take. But all the material's just kind of coming together,
and every week we meet up and assess the situation and
for the rest of the week we just go and work on whatever
we nd exciting.* [7] He also explained the experimentation that the band would be working with. It's not
going to be Hybrid Theory. It's not going to be Minutes to
Midnight. And if we do it right, it'll have a cutting edge
sound that denes itself as an individual record separate
from anything else that's out there.* [7]

less technical and instead being more organic: "[While]
there are hip-hop songs on the album 'Wretches and
Kings', 'When They Come for Me' they're like nothing the band have tried before: snarling, raw, dark and
[...] strangely organic.* [24] Some critics noted the use
of multiple genres within the album, including electronic
rock, alternative rock, industrial rock, experimental rock
and rap rock.* [24]* [25]* [26]* [27]* [28]
The entire album was exhibited at a 3-D laser exhibition at Music Box Theater in Hollywood on September 7, 2010.* [31] A Thousand Suns was ocially released on September 10, 2010 in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland* [32] and on September 14, 2010 in the
US.* [33] The band started worldwide promotion of the
album through the A Thousand Suns World Tour, which
started on October 7, 2010 and ended in September 25,
2011. The band performed an entire setlist in the Puerta

On April 13, 2011, Shinoda conrmed that the album's
third US, fourth international and overall nal single
would be "Iridescent". He also conrmed that there will
be a new, slightly shorter version of the song, which will
be part of the soundtrack of the movie Transformers:
Dark of the Moon, as well as the fact that a music video
directed by Hahn was shot for the single.* [78] The band
performed the single remix of Iridescentat the lm's
premiere at Red Square in Moscow, Russia, on June
23, 2011.* [79] The single peaked at number eighty-one
at the Billboard Hot 100, spending three weeks on the
chart, number nineteen at the Alternative Songs chart
and number twenty-nine at the Rock Songs chart.* [58]
Despite these low peaks, the single has achieved moderate success in other countries, peaking at number 39
in Australia,* [80] number ten in Israel,* [81] number two
in South Korea,* [82] and number two on the UK Rock
Chart.* [57]
"Waiting for the End", the album's second single, was performed

Critical
The Dark Side of the Moon and Radiohead's Kid A, saying "A Thousand Suns is an ALBUM. It is not a collection
of songs. It is not meant to be listened to as such. The
band is going so far as to release an iTunes version that
is one track, 47 minutes and 56 seconds long. This is
no more an 'album' by conventional standards than Dark
Side of the Moon or Kid A are. Sure, there are identiable
songs, but to understand or to appreciate any of them you
must take them in the context of the entire album.* [15]
Christopher Weingarten of The Village Voice praised the
album, calling it2010's best avant-rock nuclear-anxiety
concept record, as well as comparing it to Radiohead's
OK Computer.* [14]
Mikael Wood with Spin gave it six out of ten stars, saying
that itcontains plenty of aggressively arty materialand
called the trackThe Messengerthemost unexpected
track on the boldly conceived A Thousand Suns".* [110]
Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly gave the album
a B rating and said on A Thousand Suns at times the
band's odd mlange of industrial grind, hip-hop swagger,
and teenage-wasteland angst feels jarring.* [105] Jody
Rosen with Rolling Stone gave it three out of ve stars,
saying they arefeeling their way toward a new identity
, although she dened their skill for melody asobvious
and said that they sounded like a killer Linkin Park
tribute band.* [108] Australia's Music Network magazine gave the album a mixed review, stating it is a radical shift for the band, but its also a very uneven one...
while there's some commanding moments ('The Catalyst,'
'Wretches and Kings'), many of the tracks feel like experiments rather than fully-formed songs.* [112]

Upon its release, the album was met with mixed reviews
from critics. According to the aggregate review website
Metacritic, Living Things holds a score of 60 out of 100
based on 15 collected reviews, indicating mixed to average reviews.* [68]
Chad Childers of Loudwire stated that the album as
a whole continues to expand their world-view writing
like what listeners got with A Thousand Suns, but it also
adds more of the anger that was prevalent in their earliest
work, Hybrid Theory.* [73] Stephen Thomas Erlewine
from AllMusic declared that there is denition to their
structure, some of the choruses catch hold without too
much eort -- but this album remains one of sustained
mood, not individual momentsand concludes that the
album isa tting soundtrack for aging rap-rockers who
are comfortable in their skin but restless at heart.* [69]
The Guardian writer Dave Simpson observed that "Living
Things is more personal than A Thousand Suns, with underlying themes of recovery from traumatic experiences.
The exception, Burn It Down, delivers an antiwar sentiment via Depeche Mode-y electro-bounce, while the
similarly standout Roads Untraveled is an eerie confessional ballad, and concluded that "Living Things would
have beneted from more of such adventure, but they still
sound like a band enjoying an unexpected second life
.* [72] Johan Wippsson of Melodic wrote that the album
istoo little too pop-oriented and made for the charts than
before. The synthesizers are a bit too intent to Coldplay
mode, but assume that the band felt it was time to conquer the charts again.* [78] PopMattersJordan Blum

Chapter 6
6.1 Background
In 2010 and 2012 respectively, Linkin Park released
their fourth and fth studio albums A Thousand Suns and
Living Things. The albums, both produced by Rick Rubin and Mike Shinoda, marked a shift in the band's musical direction from a nu metal-oriented sound, recognized with Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteora (2003),
to a more experimental and cutting edgesound.* [1]
The electronica-inuenced albums, contrasting to what
the band had released previously, were still commercially
successful. A Thousand Suns was certied Platinum in
seven countries and Gold in twelve other countries, and
the album charted in the top ve of nineteen national
record charts,* [2] peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200* [3]
and #2 on the UK Albums Chart.* [4] It's successor, Living Things, was certied Gold in eleven countries, but was
only certied Platinum in France by the SNEP.* [5] The
album, however, also charted within the top ve of sixteen national record charts,* [6] once again peaking at #1
on the Billboard 200,* [3] and at #1 on the UK Albums
Chart.* [7]
Production on the band's sixth studio album began as a
result of a series of events in which Mike Shinoda decided to drop the electronic and experimental sound of
the band's previous two studio albums. Shinoda had originally produced and recorded demos, which continued
the sound of A Thousand Suns and Living Things, for the

band's sixth studio album during the band's Living Things
Tour in 2013. He presented the demos to his bandmates,
which received a positive reception from the rest of the
band, and to producer Rick Rubin, who was also positive
towards the demos, although describing them to Shinoda
as more poppythan he expected. However, Shinoda,
after listening to the demos again after the end of the
tour, felt a strong negativity towards his material, especially after Rubin's statements. In a Warner Music interview, Shinoda stated that I was listening to the stu I
was making, but, for the most part, I listened to it and
then I was like, 'This is not what I wanted to stand behind for the next album; I don't even believe in this music.
This is a mistake; I don't like what I'm making'. I kind
of went backwards into the process and scrapped all of it
and started new stu.* [8]
Following A Thousand Suns and Living Things, albums
which were created with leaving behind a sound that was
not new and not cool anymorein mind,* [9] the band's
sixth studio album was approached as a return to the
band's early sound, with the electronic sounds of their
previous two studio albums being dropped in favor of
the band's traditional rock instrumentation.* [10] Using
Hybrid Theory itself as a template, the band composed
and recorded the album in vein of the album, but also
considered the idea of a Hybrid Theory composed and
recorded in context of modern times, in 2014 rather than
2000.* [11] Brad Delson jokingly stated that the album
was analternative Hybrid Theory" andmaybe its prequel, in context of the album being inspired by artists
members of the band listened to before the band started
their musical career.* [12] Mike Shinoda told music magazine Rolling Stone about the ideas surrounding The Hunting Party: We're not 18-year-old kids making a loud
record we're 37-year-old adults making a loud record.
And what makes a 37-year-old angry is dierent than
what made us angry back in the day.* [11]
39
It's loud and its Rock, but not in the sense of what you
ve heard before, which is more like '90s Hardcore-PunkThrash".* [17] He stated the weakstatus of modern
rock in the music industry as an inspiration in recording a heavier rock album; to try to bring the sound of
the 90s back to the forefront.* [17] In an interview with
MusicRadar, Delson stated that the album will feature
many more guitar solos. He further stated that this is
from someone who was quoted early on as saying I hated
them. Not that I hated them as a listener; I just dont
want to play any; I shirked guitar solos. Early on, I felt
as though the songs we were making aesthetically didn't
want them. This new batch of songs, to me, always want
solos. I feel like every song has one.* [18]

Orange, Bogner and ENGL brand ampliers were used
on the record by guitarist Brad Delson, providing acore
sounddescribed by engineer Ethan Mates as a small
collection of core tones to be used in a sonically consistent
way throughout the record. Chandler brand amps were
also used for overdubs and higher parts.* [20] Delson spoke about his studio setup for The Hunting Party,
stating that Its great to have a setup where I can run
combinations of heads and cabs simultaneously to get the
most appropriate tone, or do something more straightforward like record just one cabinet with two mikes.* [21]

Thousand Suns and Living Things, and was inspired by
the material to create artworks that were charged with
[the band's] intensity as well as their rationale for that
change. However, Joe Hahn banned Jean from listening
to any more material after Jean had performed some of
the songs from memory on his piano.* [30] Jean originally
sketched each individual artwork for The Hunting Party
in a personal sketchbook, where it felt more intimate and
less precious to Jean. The minimality of the images was
intentional, as the artworks would eventually be made into
