LEARNING PLAN (How will you organize student learning in this lesson?
ACTIVATE

Students will be shown examples of art that was created by a mold

and cast process. They will then examine and feel rings that have
been casted.
ACQUIRE & APPLY

Day 1
1. Discussion/Lecture:
Large group views examples of casted art and examples of rings
(what they will be creating. Teacher will show a short video of a
demonstration while explaining the process, including safety
procedures.
2. Reflect/Share/Collaborate:
Students will complete a graphic organizer of key points from the
video and discussion. They will share with the members of their
table what notes they took. They will also share any ideas they
have for their casted ring.
Day 2
3. Demonstration/Work Time:
Students will use carving tools to carve their wax ring. Once they
have theyre desired design, they will attach their wax ring to a
wax stick. (This will act as a hole for metal to travel through to
get to the ring once the wax is melted away.) The teacher will
model expected behavior and skills while providing a
demonstration at the beginning of class.
Day 3
4. Demonstration Create Plaster Mold:
Students will watch and listen to the teacher mix plaster, create
mold, and use a vibrating plate to surface air bubbles. The
teacher will provide a guided practice with each student as they
mix their plaster. Students who are not at the plaster station will
work on any projects they have not completed.
Day 4
5. Finish Plaster Mold
Teacher will provide each student will an illustrated handout that
explains the mold-making steps. The teacher will also use the
white board during a short lecture to explain how the kiln in used
to melt away the wax inside the plaster so that metal can be
casted. All of the plaster molds will be placed inside the kiln so

that the wax will melt away.

Day 5
6. Cast Ring
Teacher will model expected behavior and skills while
demonstrating how to use the centrifugal fuser. The teacher will
provide guided practice to each student as they use the torch to
heat up the metal, as they pour the liquid metal into their molds,
and as they used the centrifugal fuser to distribute the metal.
Students who are not at the fuser station will be allowed to work
on any uncompleted projects.
Day 6
7. Finishing touches
Teacher will explain how to use water to soften and break away
plaster mold. Students will clean up their casted ring by taking it
out of their molds, sanding, and polishing.
ASSESSMENT

Pre-Assessment:
- Monitor previous assignments and how they handled metal
tools (torches especially).
Formative Assessment:
- Graphic Organizers
- Sketches
- Large and small group discussions
- Casted Ring
Summative Assessment:
- Instructions for the mold/cast process.

Differentiation

Content How instruction is given

- Multiple Intelligence:
- Writing on board and handout, pictures on board and
handout, tangible examples within classroom, small group
discussion, large group discussion, computers available for
online videos/further research
Process Guided Practice
- Teacher will provide scaffolding to each individual, as
needed.
Product Assessment
- Student interest they choose how to design their ring
- Final Assessment Student can write, draw, or give a verbal
presentation for their instructions on the mold/cast process.
