he Eight Mansions formula is

one of the most powerful of the
compass feng shui formulas.
Its great merit lies in its easy
practicality. Since it deals exclusively
with personalized auspicious and
inauspicious directions, anyone can
use it to great benefit.
The Eight Mansions formula shows
you how to find your best and worst
directions, and once you know
these directions, all you need to do
is to invest in a good and reliable
compass. From then on, it is only
matter of taking some trouble to
always check your sleeping, sitting
and facing directions while you
sleep, sit, work, have a meeting or
give a presentation. Making this
small effort is all that is needed to
get the most out of your auspicious
directions.
Once you get into the habit of
checking your directions, your
life will never be the same again.
Good feng shui will have changed
it forever!
According to the Kua formula,
everyone belongs to either the East
or West group. These two groups are
in conflict with each other, which
means that West group people will
suffer if they sit facing or are located
in East group directions, and East
group people are similarly affected
if they face or sit in West group
directions. So the first thing to find out
from your Kua number is whether you
belong to the East or West group.

Calculating your kua number:

1) Add the last two digits of your year of birth; if the result is
a double digit number, add the digits together so you have a
single digit number.
2) If you are male, deduct this digit from 10 the result is your
Kua number.
3) If you are female, add 5 to this digit reduce to a single digit
again, if necessary the result is your Kua number.
4) The formula is based on the Chinese
Lunar Calendar, so if you are born in
January or February, check to
see if you need to deduct
a year from your year of
birth based on the exact
date of the Lunar New
Year in your year of birth.
Get the Feng Shui Diary to
determine this.

For example:
A male born on 19th July 1985.
As the date of birth is after the start
of Lunar New Year, there is no need
to adjust it. Add the last two digits
of your year of birth:

8 + 5 = 13.
Reduce to one digit, 1 + 3 = 4.
Deduct this number from 10;
10 - 4 = 6,
So the Kua number is 6.

Note: for males born after 2000, instead
of deducting from 10, deduct from 9.

A female born 2nd January 1956.

As the date of birth is before the
Lunar New Year, the year of birth is
adjusted to 1955. Add the last two
digits of year of birth:

5 + 6 = 11.

Reduce to one digit, 1 + 1 = 2.

Add 5 to this number:
5 + 2 = 7.
So the Kua number is 7.

Note: for females born after 2000,
instead of adding 5, add 6.

Are You East or West Group ?

Once you have your kua number,
you will know if you are an East
group or West group person.
East group people have
Kua number: 1, 3, 4 and 9
West group people have
Kua number: 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8
East group directions East, Southeast, North
and South - are auspicious for East group
people, while West group directions are
unlucky for them. East group people should
ideally live in East group houses which are
defined as sitting East. They also benefit
from living in houses that face an East group
direction. However, since the sitting direction
is the exact opposite of the facing direction,
East group people can maximize their luck
by living in houses that have a sitting/facing
axis direction of North/South, since both these
directions belong to the East group.
West group directions West, Southwest,
Northwest and Northeast - are auspicious for
West group people, while East group directions
are unlucky for them. West group people
should ideally live in West group houses which
are defined as sitting West. They also benefit
from living in houses that face a West group
direction. However, since the sitting direction
is the exact opposite of the facing direction,
West group people can maximize their luck by
living in houses that have a sitting/facing axis
direction of Northeast/Southwest, since both
these directions belong to the West group.
With your Kua number, you can determine
your directions and elements from the chart
above. Start by determining your Kua number
and from this, look for your different good and
bad luck directions paying careful attention
to the fine tuning of good and bad luck. Also
note your self-element and your direction
group. The Kua number formula reveals many
clues you can use to personalize your feng shui.
